This is Teacher Appreciation Week, so I thought it would be fitting to tell some of my story and why I chose to teach.
I was a freshman at Florida A&M University #COLAC and I had not declared my major yet, so i had to start out in College Algebra first semester. My last math class in high school was AP Calculus with one of my favorite teachers (love you Marigene Browaed O'Connor), so you can imagine this was a step backwards. My professor immediately saw that I had no business being in that class. I would tutor my classmates in the library pretty often. This was something that I enjoyed. Even at the age of 18. I have always enjoyed Math, even back in 1st grade at St. Pius!
Back to college years: I finally decided to become a Math Teacher so declared my major as Math Education. I’ve taken some tough math classes! (Differental Equations, Numerical Analysis, Modern and Pure Geometry, Advanced Calculus. ….the list goes on) But nothing prepares you for the classroom as much as experience. Getting up there in front of teenagers and sharing your knowledge with them. I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but I will say that this is really my calling. I love to see that “light come on”, those respectful debates about the right or wrong answers, and watching the most quiet student drop knowledge to their classmates and they praise them for sharing.
I’ve learned that I am not only Math Teacher, students really depend on us. They look up to us and sometimes we are the only ones that they feel comfortable talking to. Not everyone is cut out to be efucators, but I know that God has me in this career for a reason.
I pray that I have touched a few lives and made a few students appreciate Math the way I do.
