“Fair enough,” she replied, keeping the distance for the time being in order to remain in control of the situation. This wouldn’t be the first time someone tried to fool her by playing nice first, but she didn’t feel woozy or anything; so even if the tension didn’t leave her shoulder, she allowed the woman a chance to speak.
She gave off the air of a human (one who could more than take care of herself), but there was such a fine line between human and witch. “I am fascinating, most people just don’t ask. Would you believe me if I said some people who could easily hail from Halloweentown?”
She laughed, crossing her arms over her chest with a grin.
“Please tell me damn Oogie Boogie did this. I can believe a lot of crazy things, but I think I draw the line at Tim Burton characters.”
Well, that made sense, at least. If she was picking up the woman’s cues correctly, this situation was related to the world of the supernatural. Gabe had seen a lot of bizarre things since she’d opened her bar to nonhumans--so far, this didn’t even make the top ten. Still, it confirmed her suspicion that she needed to tread carefully. Whether the woman in front of her was creature or human, hunter or hunted, she certainly seemed like someone she didn’t want to pick a fight with.
“So, seriously, what happened here? I mean, you look like you have everything under control, but do you need any sort of help?”
RT @Liquor: Agave Lovers Rejoice: Mezcal Week is Coming! https://t.co/KaKZGfuOV3
She’s taken aback by the stranger and her abruptness, the hand drumming on the bar stopping its’ movements. The bartender is straightforward. Prudence can appreciate that, likes that she’s not hiding what she means behind pretty words. Slowly, a smile spreads across her face and instead of giving her order and going to hide in the corner, she leans her weight more on the steady structure of the bar.
“ I’m not plannin’ on startin’ nothing, not unless they start with me and you seem to run a tight ship around here - so I’m sure they won’t. ” Another smile, as she slowly takes in the bottles behind the bar. “ Give me whatever as long as it’s not straight whiskey or beer. Really, ‘m not picky. ”
“Oh, they all know the rules. Anyone who starts a fight in here without a damn good reason gets a crack on the head and a boot out the door.”
Her shoulders relax, her smile more genuine this time. The girl seemed to know a little bit about what sort of clientele she served, which in her experience only helps matters. It can be an awkward conversation, attempting to explain to a person trained by years of tragedy and bloodshed to destroy anything nonhuman that the people in her bar were friendly--or, at least, weren’t going to outright attack them.
“No straight whiskey, huh?” She feigns shock, eyes playfully wide as she reaches for a glass, “I thought it was some sort of unspoken rule that all hunters guzzled it like it was going out of style.”
She quickly mixed a drink, pouring it from shaker to glass with the ease of practice, and garnishing it with a freshly cut orange slice.
“How about a whiskey sour? Sweet, with a little bit of that whiskey kick to it. First one’s on the house, tell me what you think.”
Prudence laughs, book thrown on top of the bar as she stretches the stiffness out of her spine. “ It’s a murder mystery. My brother bought it for 3 dollars at a pharmacy and left it in my car. I found it while I was cleaning and - ” She giggled. “ It is a surprisingly engaging read. The pacing is good, none of the characters are idiots and their motivations make sense.” A shrug accompanies the end of her sentence. “ I don’t know. Maybe I’m just glad to be reading something other than research. ”
She returns the laugh, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“I think I’m the opposite. I still feel like I’m so new to this world of the supernatural--” she shrugged with a smile, “I find it all so fascinating. But I can definitely see how slogging through some of the dryer texts for a few years would quickly turn me off of it.”
Her smile faded a touch, curiosity rising in her eyes. She bit her lip, hesitant to pry, before she finally gave in, “your brother is he--like you? A hunter?”

❛ What do I get for making an ass of myself ? ❜
@puresails
She laughed, crossing her arms over her chest as she slowly shook her head.
“Darling, you’re hardly the first person to make an ass of themselves in my bar, I wouldn’t trouble yourself over it too much.” She grinned, tapping her lip with a finger as she watched the woman in silence for a beat, “but, I’ll tell you what. How about a drink? On the house.”
@endbound
‘ THEN I’M GONNA USE WHAT i have left of it, ‘ it was said with fierce confidence, and a lingering disbelief - he didn’t believe in luck, or karma. he believed that you do what you do, and whatever happens, happen. only a course of action can determine the outcome - but if she really believed that the only reason why he hasn’t died yet was because of sheer luck, then he was going to grab that luck like a noose and wrap it around his neck and let his expiration date rely on the coarseness of false belief. ‘ hasn’t failed me yet.
She bit back what she wanted to say, bit back the you’re too young for this, too young to look this tired, too young to sound this bitter, too young to be living in this nightmare. She had a feeling any sentence that started with you’re too young would be ill received by the young man, and she had no interest in pissing him off.
The truth was, she was lonely. She had lost everything when the world blew up in her face--lost her family, her business, her friends. She knows she isn’t the only one, isn’t even close to being alone in her suffering, but that doesn’t make things any easier. In fact, looking around, seeing nothing but tired and defeated faces at every turn--really, it only served to make things worse.
She sighed, then forced a tired, crooked grin onto lips that seemed to have forgotten what it was to smile. She rummaged around in the box beside her, finally fishing out two battered glasses, and filling them with her own handmade moonshine.
She raised her glass, placing the other in front of him, “well, then, querido, let’s drink to luck, and hope it has the good grace to stick around a little longer.”

“Made fancy work of those,” she nodded toward the already fallen littering the ground as she was busted in her escape attempt, “but if you plan to come after me, you better be quick. At this distance, trust me, the advantage is mine.”
“Relax, amada, I have no interest in getting on your bad side. Not right away, at least. I’d like to at least exchange pleasantries before we try to kill each other.”
She quirked a grin, arms crossed as wary eyes regarded the stranger in front of her, “I know I’ve only known you for, oh, five seconds now, but I must say you seem like a fascinating person. Tell me, who’d you piss off to end up in this mess?”
@sunshiinestained
“ Hmm? ” Her attention shifts from her book, one hand tiredly pulling up her blonde hair. “You’re right - I got all caught up in my book, it’s a fascinating read. ”
She laughs, giving the bar top one last wipe before tossing the rag to the side. She leans her arms on the bar with a sigh, a smile quirking up one side of her mouth as she watches the younger woman.
“Oh? Do tell, then. What could be so fascinating to distract you for hours and keep you away from a sensible bed time?”
Gabe is trilingual, fluent in English, Portuguese, and German. She was closest to her mother’s family growing up--especially her Uncle Ovi--so Portuguese is the language she most often slips into when she’s angry or distracted, but she used to love conversing with her paternal grandparents in their native German tongue.
