Hi anon,

You shouldn’t base what his sexuality may be off of the most commercial single to come out of Fine Line. Watermelon Sugar was specifically marketed to be the breakout single the gp knew, it was marketed as a het anthem about eating pussy, so of course one would get that impression from the music video. It was their intention. What that tells you is that the marketing worked, what that does not tell you is anything about Harry’s sexuality. 

What WS is actually about or what Harry’s intentions or wishes for the mv were, are not relevant in this case, bc the song had a marketing concept that was pushed and so the music video followed the same concept. If anything, I’d say WS was the least personal single we got from Fine Line. Both the song and the music video. However, even then there were aspects of queer coding incorporated into the mv, with references to Elton John’s mv for I’m Still Standing (Golden also reminded me of I’m Still Standing).

Watermelon Sugar is based off of the novel ‘In Watermelon Sugar’, and Harry captured the essence and ideas from the book and made it into a song. And very well I may add. The book describes ‘watermelon sugar’ as basically the concept of pleasure - and the song, or Harry’s interpretation and understanding of the book, is his attempt at describing the concept of pleasure from the book. Think of his song as the book in music form. The book is surrealist and a bit psychedelic, much like the song and much like some of the visuals and feelings you may get from the mv.

Now, as for why I think he’s gay: Harry has, for the past 10 years, shown that he closely identifies with gay men’s culture and community. He hasn’t been able to say or show a lot, but what he has shown the public has been how he sees himself as part of the gay community. He has not shown any romantic interest in women from what I have seen - and no, I am not considering his public image of a womanizer as who he actually is. Harry has shown time and time again how he is romantically and sexually interested in men, not women, through his songs, things he’s done, things he’s said, places he frequents and the person he has dated. The list goes on and on and on, it’s 10 years long.

The simple answer is that when he “confirmed” that it was about oral sex, the interviewer deliberately used gender-neutral language, calling it “mutually reciprocated oral pleasure” - and at this point his fanbase had already decided it was about going down on women, so he was only asking about that not anything in the text of the song. 

Also, Harry “confirming” the interviewer’s assumption was really just him saying “is it?” and then diverting to talk about sex and how he is viewed by the general public.

More importantly, the song is named after the book in In Watermelon Sugar by Richard Brautigan. Since your friends are in university, hopefully they’ll be interested in reading it. It’s a surrealist novella, so it’s not the easiest thing to understand. 

To me, it’s obvious that the song is based on a good understanding of the book. In the book, the ‘watermelon sugar’ essentially represents the ephemeral nature of pleasure. Other themes of the book include harmony with nature and acceptance of death as part of life. 

I think the song is more psychedelic and abstract, like the book, and about the same general themes as the book. the idea that it’s only literally about oral sex  is just annoying to me lol - and there is literally nothing in the song that defines the gender of his lover, that is left completely up to interpretation
