It was an enormous pleasure for @matthewdanielprice and I to spend some time in the Skye Weavers studio with Roger and Andrea, who weave gorgeous tweed and plaid fabric for garments, scarves and throw blankets on their bicycle powered loom in the Isle of Skye, Scotland. (at Glendale, Skye)

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about upcycling and no waste solutions to textile production. Especially with regards to my own work and practice. After a long summer of countless rejection of my work, this past weekend at the #nodmakerie craft weekend for kids and moms, I watched parents and kids bond in my workshop over cutting up their old clothes and weave them into something new and beautiful. I remembered why I do what I do and why it's important. It's not for the cool factor, it's not for fancy blog posts or press, it's not for the wealthiest of buyers. I do it for us, all of us, and for our world. I watched kids and moms feel connected to each other and empowered by art making this weekend, while also learning a new skill and cutting out a little fraction of what might've ended up in s landfill. I feel filled up and I've got some BIG ideas as a result. A public thank you to all the kids and moms who made this weekend great, and who snapped me out of my summer long funk. and also a big thank you to @thelandofnod @themakerie @campwandawega πβ€οΈπ
I spent this past weekend in Wisconsin teaching kids and their Mom's how to upcycle their old t-shirts into new beautiful weavings. Each child and mom hand wove pot holders together to use at home. Now that's a family project that is fun for all and gives old clothes destined for a landfill, a new beautiful life instead.
"It may be a bare necessity of life, but textile work always goes far beyond the clothing and shelter and family. In terms of quality, sophistication, and sheer quantity, the production of textiles always seems to put some kind of surplus at play. The production of "homespun" yarn and cloth was one of the first cottage industries, pin money was women's earliest source of independent cash, and women were selling surplus yarn and cloth and working as small-scale entrepreneurs long before the emergence of factories, organized patterns of trade, and any of the mechanisms which now define the textile industry." Hi everyone, Dee here, there's only 5 short days and $20,000 left to raise in our Kickstarter campaign. We are raising funds to produce a collection of woven textile goods for the home; responsible fibers, thoughtful design, ethical labor. Throws, pillows, table linens all made right here in our Chicago production studio by skilled, experienced weavers. Sounds like something you'd like to support? Click the link our profile and donate today, any amount counts big toward our goal. Can't donate? Spread the word, the more people who know our mission, the better. Herron aims to produce green textile goods that are thoughtful and respectful to our environment and people. If we can reach our goal, this collection can help change an industry that has been shipped overseas and become highly abused. Let's make it happen together!
