Salem is feeling better with his recent injections, so now we’re on the phase of therapy where I push him as much as possible to break old movement patterns that are contributing to overall pain and incorrect movement. A BIG component of this for him is full range of motion for hind limbs and targeting glutes specifically. Here’s a set up I did today for backing up, an exercise that has been very difficult for him. The method behind the madness: about an inch gap between the first cato board and the second to encourage reach, inclined second Cato to continue to encourage reach, Cato long way so he can’t widen and pivot rather than reach, and instability to turn on stabilizing muscles. I was really pleased with how he worked here, less toe tapping than before his injections and nice stretching of his LS.

#only thing I’m not super happy about with this set up is it’s hard to encourage a different leading leg than his default #but we worked that in a separate set up #rehab exercises #Salem

something I’ve noticed about Kep, which surprised me bc I always thought it was instinctual, is that he does not know how to dig. never has. he will paw at his bed or the floor when he’s getting ready to sleep, but only ever with one leg at a time. I have never seen him do the left-right-left-right alternating standard digging motion. it’s always left-left-left-left and sometimes he’ll switch to right-right-right-right but never does he alternate feet. it’s also only with bedding, never in the yard. Stellina has always liked to dig ever since she was a puppy (mostly in water but she also has a nice little scrape under my lilac bush she naps in) and Boone was a big digger who made several upsettingly large holes in my yard. I feel like Kep would love digging based on his general penchant for destruction, so maybe it’s a good thing he’s never figured it out.

15. favorite book you read as a school assignment?

From my lit major days, I really loved I Love Dick by Chris Kraus. The most unhinged mind ever and nobody ever listens to my recommendation because they can’t get past the title :(. From public school Curriculum Reading I just adored the Outsiders. What an incredible book that deserved so much more than being read in a middle school classroom(yes yes teach the kids literary criticism but also I have Feelings about how US curriculums interact with very poignant books)

Salem health update for those following along

Basically, we are waiting and doing bandaid solutions for pain at this point. I’m saving for an MRI, and insurance should cover MRI/surgery if required in January, so I’m trying to manage the best I can for as long as I can. He’s getting weaker despite conditioning work and being active. He went in for a Full Body Tune Up ™️ at work and got injections in his hips, LS, and psoas, shockwave in those spots, and Pennhip and ultrasound for further diagnostic. His hips are actually really good(tightest 5% for pyrsheps) and no big red flags on the ultrasound that we didn’t expect. We basically narrowed everything down to LS/neurological involvement, with no other major pain source pointing to primary pain. Leading theory is occult tethered cord syndrome.

We’ve stopped having any competition goals for sports, but he’s still able to enjoy training for obedience and agility so we’re pursuing that until he says he can’t. Unfortunately he becomes quite aggressive when painful so that is a constant gauge of what we can live with and manage and what is not. If he was to get more painful and aggressive I will move up our plans for diagnostic and treatment because euth would be the only other realistic option.

QOL wise he’s maintaining my criteria at this point. Though he’s on rest right now to recover from injections and would like everyone to know his life SUCKS and he’s ABUSED.

So that’s where we’re at. If you’re interested in seeing more of his movement/symptoms I’d be happy to post videos and talk about it.
