There were too many humans for each of them to hunt; there wouldn’t be enough food for all of them if they wouldn’t find other ways, like breeding animals just for the purpose of eating them once they were fat enough. It would be difficult to imagine; a world where they depended on their survival capability. That was not the kind of world the redhead lived in.
