“What are you working on?”

Henry glanced up from his pad to see his grandma, “Nothing important. If you want to look though you can.”

“I’m glad you’re doing okay, sweetheart. If I can ever do anything to help, tell me. And, we do have the whole summer now, plenty of time to spend together if you want to.”

“Does that include calling you if I just need to spend time with you?” He asked her quietly wanting to make sure of what he could expect from his family, “I’d really like that though. Mom always talks about you.”

“I’m happy to hear that. Tell me, how have you been doing? I know all of this seems to be taking precedent, but aside from that.”

“I’ve been actually really good. I mean this is all way more chaotic than I probably planned, but I’m just happy to actually be here.”

“Well, in that case…I do hope that I’m living up to your expectations.”

“I mean I think you are. I was expecting an attentive grandmother that paid attention to me.”

I wouldn’t think you stupid, love. It’s only been a few months, if you still were adjusting to having me, I wouldn’t blame you for it.

I like having a grandma though. I always wondered how interesting it would be to have more than just my mom.”

Well, your mom…she’s always been like that. Worse, actually, but apparently we both like to exaggerate. I can only imagine   her stories about us.

I mean I’ve only heard good things about you guys.

Of course she would, but I’m in your corner too. I’m happy you know that.

I think I’d have to be stupid to question if you have my back

Our family’s had its fair share of needing to adjust to all of  this, even if it happened when they were your age. If they ever tried to rush you, I would be disappointed.

I think my mom would personally fight them on it, but I know you have my back too I promise.

Why’s that?

I just know my mom so it makes me question everyone, but it’s okay. 

Eh, it’s not that bad. I’m sure we make it sound worse than it really is.

I’m not so sure about that

Yeah, I guess it is. I’ve spent most of the day around my cousin, and she’s got these ‘talents’ that are stranger than they sound.

Yeah that really makes me question the family more

Just don’t do anything too stupid and I think you’ll be fine.

My mom probably wouldn’t question if I’m her kid if I’d actually rebel a little

“We are not that bad. I think you’ll like Rebecka though, she seems pretty great.”

“I hope that she likes me.”
