Hamburg 1999: in this production it’s Tumblebrutus who gets pushed forward by Plato to approach Grizabella, and he plays it as though he’s almost terrified: not luring her in to scratch her for mischief or malice, but forced to approach and reach out now that he’s been pushed forward, and losing his nerve at the last minute. Pouncival then approaches in the last gif and Jellylorum rushes forward to head him off (and comfort him).

Which makes it all the more interesting that, after Victoria, Tumblebrutus is the first to approach her at the end.
