DES MOINES, Iowa -- Farmers like Corey Goodhue have been waiting to grow hemp in Iowa for years. Several states like Colorado and Kentucky passed laws to allow for industrial hemp, but the president's signature on the farm bill will clear it for the nation. Goodhue says with tariffs still in place on soy and ethanol, it comes at a good time.

Last week, lawmakers reached an agreement on the 867 billion dollar farm bill, pushing it through both chambers with the expectation that it will be signed into law by the end of the year. A few items on that bill might be paving the way for our farmers and producers. One of those items includes the usage of hemp. The new farm bill allows the cultivation of industrial hemp which is a product that brings controversy but could also bring opportunity to those in Nebraska.

Despite the delay in this year’s farm bill, one thing is clear: hemp and hemp-derived CBD is likely to become federally legal in the U.S.

The final 2018 Farm Bill is expected to be voted on as early as next week and would legalize hemp cultivation and could be a catalyst for explosive growth in a nascent industry that some forecast could top $20 billion by 2022.
