So borders are connection points, not barriers.  And essential workers grow, make, care, pick, stack & deliver.  But many doing these tough jobs are on low wages with no job security.  Light through the fog

So how did Santa visit on 25 Dec despite Covid restrictions?  He secured priority classification (essential work).  He reassured (social-distancing).  He used allies (NORAD), tech (online delivery) & experience (past pandemics).  He ensured the Team was briefed (time/quantity targets) and fit (elves/reindeer). His paperwork was correct & complete (no quarantine/delays).  UK firms - apply Santa's tactics to Covid & Brexit!

2020 turned out to be The Year of the Little People.  SO many world leaders,  big organisations & leading countries fell short, But little people, workers, small firms & nations delivered – care, food, improvisations or whatever was needed. Covid proves we never know what's coming next.  Innovation is typically incremental, gradual, serendipitous & inexorable.  Usually not from one eureka moment, but many trial-&-error experiments.  Now is the time to try doing something different or differently; and using fewer, not more, resources. Going round in circles - but what goes round need not come round exactly the same

Business covid- survival tactic: change product &/or service emphasis, to be more visible & relevant.  Having a basic plan, a fallback plan & an alternative plan enables us to take a long-term view, but make short-term decisions.  Physical & virtual shops must co-exist; trained staff & helpful videos make them 'magic cubes'.  Online launches & virtual fairs save carbon, time & money.  A business face to match the squares.  Twist & shout

DEFINE

Work defines who we are, moulds our values, determines our future prospects.  We remain fixated on finding work for all, even if it's toil with no purpose other than to keep the wheels of commerce turning.  Like automation, Covid offers a vision of a more leisured future, and invites us to reassess why & how we work.  Blue-sky thinking.  Must get in front?

AUGMENT

Business Covid-survival tactic: augment existing product or service at low- or no cost.  Be customer-centric.  Turn a purely transactional relationship into an advisory one.  In the end, value is simply being of service, not a vague concept.  Something has value as long as it is able to serve.  It really is that simple.  And from that, all else follows.  Ask your mum

GROUPTHINK

Business Covid survival strategy: avoid groupthink.  Consider whether your firm can compete better by copying others, or by being different.  Persevere & you'll become the bold, far-sighted thoughtful leader others turn to for advice.  If you want to be a maverick but your firm is inhospitable, start your own, or join a dynamic start-up.  You add value because you think differently. Stand out from the crowd

EMPATHY

Covid survival lesson from the new US President-Elect: above all, have empathy.  In business, that means - Respect the client. Listen to what they're saying. Respond kindly.  In the process, add value by rethinking roles & procedures at key customer touch-points, like phone calls & emails.  Empathy can't be taught or bought, but can definitely be felt.  Heart of the matter
