I believe it stands for the Housing Owners Association? It’s like. a group of people who keep neighborhoods in check. Usually they’re made up of people who live within the neighborhood itself.

This can range from things like making sure properties look presentable and follow guidelines set for the neighborhood to fighting for what people living within the neighborhood want and setting up committees to help the neighborhood.

Not every neighborhood has one, and not every neighborhood has strict guidelines for what they can and can’t do to their property. But that is one of the HOA’s jobs.

I think in 2019 a woman in Florida read through her HOA guidelines that were written in the 1930’s and found that it STILL had a rule that “only Caucasians/whites” could live there.

Back in the 50’s HOA’s were just point blank discriminating against POC & Jewish ppl and the Supreme Court ruled that they were violating the civil rights act.

It still doesn’t stop them, POC and disabled people that live in HOA neighborhoods will often find themselves hit with petty violations like trash cans being out, or putting up fences (god forbid they paint the fence the wrong color by mistake!) While white neighbors will be left alone.

I would sooner live in the literal middle of nowhere (which I do now) than associate with an HOA.
