BRMC - guitar tuner wanted! (instore @Fopp Records, Camden (via)
There is always a lingering sense of nostalgia as the year comes to an end. Your mind plays a year in review, moments flash, some of which you wish you could feel those feelings, hear those sounds, and see those sights over and over. So here are some of the moments, that when I reflect on, I ask my mind to stop and play it back a little slower.
•The biggest moment for me was getting the chance to shoot my favorite band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Ask any of my closest friends and they’ll tell you that whenever I was asked who would you like to shoot most? I always responded with BRMC. I’ve been a fan since I was 16 and this was really a big deal to me- yea, I turned into a giddy and nervous girl, but hey, everyone’s a big fan of someone.
•Being able to say I have my own studio definitely has a nice ring to it. I’ve always wanted a space where artists can share a co-working space, and as of July I’ve had my very own place that has and does harbor some really cool folks.
•Hitting the 2 year mark of my life in NY felt pretty nice. Even better was realizing how comfortable I am in my skin here- I didn’t quite realize this until I spent some time in LA again late this year. Being comfortable and totally happy with who you are is definitely an achievement worth tipping the hat to.
•Spending 3 weeks in June with one of my dearest friends in her hometown of Monterrey, Mexico was absolutely the best trip of the year. She’s one of the most amazing and talented people I’m blessed to know, so spending such quality time with her since she moved back was a delight. Let’s see… a magazine cover, private plane, unshot territory, a very cooperative donkey, hours of laughter, pounds of food, sleepless nights, new endeavors….
•Receiving a check from Vanity Fair for a portrait I shot about 5 years ago with a point and shoot was pretty nice and unexpected. I’m aiming for an editorial next time…
•One spontaneous evening a new level of fun was attained whilst sitting at a dim table in SoHo with a couple of wonderful friends. We sat down at 8 pm and within a minute it was 4 am. It was the best longest/shortest minute ever.
•I woke up on a typical Sunday and decided a BBQ was in order, but alas, I did not own a BBQ. So in the spirit of NY, I hopped on the train to the closest Home Depot, picked up a shiny red one and dragged it all the way back home, running with it at one point to catch the train. Called a couple friends, who called a couple other friends, and so and so forth a very fun BBQ was born. The rest during the year couldn’t quite live up to it.
•I’m realizing that it’s the unplanned moments that tend to be the best, like when my mom came to visit and treated me to a broadway show since we’ve both always wanted to attend one. So, my first show:
•Unfortunately, sometimes people you love get really ill. Thankfully, they can also recover. Both of which can bring tears, and luckily I was able to shed some of the happy sort at the news of her triumph.
•My living situation the first year in NY was of the worst kind. It resulted in lawyers and court dates, but finally, FINALLY, all dues have been paid, resolved, and it’s just a distant memory to learn from.
•There was an extraordinarily long lull between finally deciding on another tattoo. I love them, but just couldn’t decide on what to do. So, one day after an unexpected job came in, I went out and unexpectedly got one.
•Serendipity, you devil. I’m still not too sure why you’ve played your cards as you have, as there seems to be no end in your endeavor. Whenever I think we’re done with this particular incident, we’ll call it, you resurface what I try to forget. But play on you peculiar bitch, I’m learning a few things about myself in the process.
•Waking up that one morning this year in July with a flutter, warmth, hope, and feeling at ease. Even if it was just that one morning, it was peaceful.
•I’ve never really understood why my own music sounds the way it does. I never really loved it. This year, however, I’ve written quite a few that made me just want to play in the company of others again. So to all of those moments this year that inspired me to write something new, I thank you.
Lights out 2010, I’m satisfied. Let’s spread some love in 2011.
