MBTI 101: What Do the Letters Mean? (Part 2)
Intuition (N) vs Sensing (S)
The different between intuitives and sensors is probably the biggest difference in the MBTI! Sensors also outnumber intuitives in the real world 3:1, although tumblr is PACKED with iNtuitive types...
Thatâs because we already have an I (for introversion) - and the last thing anyone wants to do is make the random strings of letters which make up MBTI type even LESS memorable... 16 personalities tried to come up with snazzy names for each of the types, but they donât always describe them well. Personally I prefer the descriptions you see on here, even though theyâre not always flattering!
So Whatâs the Difference?
Overall, sensors and intuitives think differently. Sensors tend to think sequentially/neatly, whereas intuitives have messier thoughts which range all over the place. Sensing deals strictly with what exists or what existed as it it, whereas intuition adds a second layer of personal or abstract meaning to any sensory experience.
Does intuition in MBTI mean the same as the general definition?
Yes and no. It includes everything youâd use the word for generally but it also refers to a specific style of thought. Intuition works differently in each type and can be extroverted or introverted, but thatâs something better saved for another post!
Youâre on tumblr. Duh. Of course you are. Unless youâre an aesthetically minded SP type whoâs here for dreamy photos, fashion, and art. In all seriousness, tumblr has an abundance of intuitive types compared to other social media. In fact, most of the reasons itâs referred to fondly as a âshithole of a websiteâ or other variants are because intuitive types are, well, a bit odd. You could say weâre eccentric, but that doesnât fully explain it. You can be strongly or weakly intuitive too. Iâm a strong intuitive, but you can probably tell that by the fact I run this nerdy blog ;-)
Intuitive types often experience:
More mental health issues
Feelings of being different
Huge imagination and a tendency to escape into fantasy
A draw to the deeper things in life
Depending on your type, you might be into topics considered geeky or esoteric
May be diagnosed with autism, add, adhd, or a similar disorder
Why do I see so much hate for sensors?
As intuitive types are outnumbered, discovering MBTI and finding explanations for your quirks can be extremely validating. However, a life of not fitting with society - which is built by and for sensors - can live some intuitive types a little embittered. However, the fun loving, artisanal SP types also struggle, even if their cognitive style is more similar to SJ types. Ultimately, I believe MBTI should be used as a tool to promote understanding between types - not to divide.
