Second from the right is Flying Officer Pierre Léopold Soesman (20 April 1922 – 11 May 1944). His aircraft was damaged by anti-aircraft fire on 11 May 1944 during an attack on a German radar station at Cap d'Antifer in France.

He bailed out of his falling plane over the strait and landed on the water's surface. Other pilots saw that his life raft had not inflated, and two of Soesman's comrades circled the landing site as long as possible, only leaving when their fuel ran out.

Spitfires and a Supermarine Walrus flying boat scrambled to search for him and continued searching until dark and into the early morning hours, but were unable to find him.

The adjutant of the 609th squadron indicated in his report that, despite the calm sea, given the low temperature at night, the only hope for the pilot's rescue was that he would be picked up by the Germans, but he was not found among the prisoners of war either.
