Prompt #28 - ALF | Word Count: 1000 | Rating: T | CW: Language, Lingering Injuries | POV: Steve | Pairing: Steddie | Tags: Post S4, Eddie Munson Lives, Established Steddie, Caretaker Steve, The Things You Do For Love
Steve's drumming his fingers against his leg in the drive thru. The line is long, longer than it has any business being for this late at night, and he's tired.
He yawns, pays for his second Whopper of the day and forks over the additional $2.99 for the ALF puppet.Â
"The Rock Star one. With the guitar. Please," Steve stresses at the first and second window.Â
He doesn't need another Chef ALF or Baseball Player ALF. He's got those. Two of each, actually, before he learned to check the goddamn bag before pulling away. And he's got the Beach Party ALF looking at him from the passenger seat right this second.Â
He got that one on his lunch break.
Tonight, he has specifically requested the Rock Star version. Twice. He doesn't need any of the others. He's already got them socked away, waiting for the full set before giving them to Eddie. It's been a rough few months. Eddie's pain flaring back up while Steve's hardly ever home to help make things easier.Â
But this? This he can do. He can eat Burger King and buy puppets. And if he gets the right one, he's golden. Task over.
He can't fail.Â
This is the one he's missing, and Steve's been on the goddamn hunt.Â
ALF's dressed in a little black t-shirt printed with Born to Rock and has a little guitar and record. It's fitting for Eddie, and Steve knows he's gonna love it, even if it costs almost a full hour's pay to buy.Â
Steve's still trapped in his minimum wage job while he goes to night school to get his teaching degree. It's gonna be worth it, even if it's taking forever.
They hand over his food, and the puppet.
It's got a chef's hat. No, no, no.
Steve hands it back.
"The rock star one. With the guitar. Please."
They grumble, and after a little searching, he's handed the correct one through the drive thru window.
"Thank you," he says, taking it, and putting it with the other one in the Hawaiian shirt.Â
It's over. He has them all. Fucking finally.
None of this is new to Steve. He's picked Happy Meal toys and collectable glasses. Dragging them into their house for his little packrat of a boyfriend to squirrel away into his collection of junk masquerading as treasure.
Steve opens the front door, and closes it quietly behind him. ALFs tucked safely away in his backpack. The other ones are in the back of his closet, under his old sports equipment. Eddie would never look there.Â
It's where Steve hides all the stuff he doesn't want Eddie to find.Â
Eddie's asleep, and Steve's quiet as he stows his back in the closet, before toeing off his shoes. Getting undressed, then sliding into bed. Eddie doesn't rouse, but Steve's not surprised. By this time of night, Eddie's well-medicated in one way or another.Â
They need to find a specialist, someone that can look at that leg. Two years later, and it's somehow worse than it was right after the bats. Steve worries Eddie's done more damage walking on it the way he has, shifting everything out of alignment in the process.
Steve's working days, going to school at night, and saving all his extra cash, puppets notwithstanding, so they can get Eddie in somewhere soon. Maybe after the first of the year.Â
Eddie's still asleep when Steve gets up for work the next morning. He stealthily stows the puppets with the others, running his fingers over the velvet box hidden away with them. It's not a fancy ring, not real gold or anything like that, but Steve picked it out for Eddie.
Wanting to ask.
Wanting forever.
The time just hasn't been right.
He's probably rushing, anyway. It's only been two years. Nobody is sure after only two years.Â
But Steve feels sure.
He also knows any proposal he'll offer Eddie can't be made good on, at least not legally, but he still wants Eddie to know he's in it. For the long haul. Totally committed.
Steve isn't afraid of commitment, it's all he wants. To stay. To love and be loved.
Steve's lacing his Nikes when Eddie stirs, rolling over to press his face to Steve's back.
"Mornin'," Steve says, fondness coloring his voice.
"Mmm," Eddie says, pressing a kiss to Steve's back, through the rough polyester uniform shirt he has to wear.
"I'll be home early tonight," Steve says.Â
"I'll cook," Eddie says, and Steve smiles. Cooking is a stretch. But Steve will eat the cereal or the Spagettios without complaint.Â
At least it won't be a Whopper, he supposes.
The house is dark when he pulls in, and Steve feels a little crestfallen. It must have been a bad day if Eddie's already in bed before six.Â
So, Steve's extra quiet when he opens the front door. Pressing it closed behind him with a gentle click.
"Hey," Eddie says, and Steve nearly jumps out of his skin.
"Fuck," Steve laughs, holding his hand to his chest. Heart beating fast.
On the kitchen table there are plates set, and a single candle. Six ALF puppets are crowded around something, like they're preparing for a ritual, and Steve knows what it is.
"Been snooping?"
"Thought I saw ALF fur this morning."
Steve nods.
"You have something to ask me?" Eddie questions, big eyes shining by candlelight.
This isn't what he had in mind, of course. He wanted perfect. But life, well, life's never been perfect. They fought monsters. Eddie's got a bum leg. Steve's working and going to school and tired as shit.
Steve bought six ALF puppets instead of four.Â
But he's also got Eddie, and Eddie wants him to ask.
Steve snatches the ring box away from the ALFs and gets down on one knee in front of Eddie.
"Will you marry me?" Steve asks, forgoing the speech. Eddie knows all that already.
Eddie smiles in a way that Steve will always love.
"Yes."
If you want to write your own, or see more entries for this challenge, pop on over to @corrodedcoffinfest and follow along with the fun! 🦇
Note: I don't remember (and couldn't find confirmation either way) if you could buy all four puppets at once, or if they were released weekly. I did have them, though!
to anyone even considering posting ai generated steddie fics i hope you know that you should feel nothing but shame and if i could I'd spit on you. this fandom didn't survive off of passion and love and 10 minutes of screen time for four years just for some fuckass losers to jump in with soulless uncreative rancid slop

summary:
The funny thing about wearing a mask for so long is that eventually you almost forget you’re wearing it.Â
Steve Harrington has spent his entire life trying to be someone that people love. That people want to be around. That people want to stay for. He’s spent so long carefully crafting this persona that he’s not even sure who he is without it anymore.Â
Eddie Munson has spent his entire life just trying to survive. The best way he’s learned to do that is by not letting anyone get too close. By giving everyone some overly dramatized version of himself. Because everyone who’s ever gotten close to who he really is has either left or been ripped away.Â
One blurry night together bleeds into the jagged edges of the Upside Down returning. As the two of them fight off yet another wave of otherworldly forces while protecting some rather death-wish hungry barely-teenagers, their own demons suddenly demand to be confronted, leaving Steve and Eddie unable to keep hiding – from themselves and each other.
lil preview below the cut!
excerpt:
And for some reason Steve does not fucking understand.
For some reason he will continue to question for long after this.Â
For some reason he still won’t have an answer to years from now when they’re well and truly past this.
For some reason, Steve puts himself between Eddie and everyone else, says a quick “You might want to run” over his shoulder as he pushes Eddie toward the door with one hand, the other –
Well, in the span of approximately 1.7 seconds, Steve smiles, flips Tommy the bird, and kicks the leg out from the makeshift bar table.Â
The folding table holding a smattering of drinks.
The folding table holding the absolutely massive punch bowl.Â
Just in time for Tommy to collide with it.
And crash to the floor.
“Holy fucking shit.” Eddie laughs, hot on Steve’s ear.
Steve laughs too, actually, kind of shocking himself as he watches the punch bowl shatter – watches the greenish-red liquid spray everywhere. The fake eyes and dismembered candy fingers scattering across the floor. The partygoers shrieking as they’re coated in punch.
Tommy falls across the table as it collapses, getting completely drenched in punch and glass, the punch bowl half-beneath him as it crumbles.
Jason is hot on his heels, stumbling and falling on top of Tommy, the pair of them groaning in tandem.
“Oh–” Steve is laughing hard now.Â
Laughing as he watches Jason and Tommy writhe on the floor, helplessly trying to wipe the punch and glass from their…well, their everywhere, really.
Turns out glass likes to stick in things.Â
“Holy fucking shit.” Eddie whisper-laughs behind him again, a sentiment Steve wholly agrees with, except –
“Run, man, seriously.” Steve’s eyes are wide as he pushes Eddie a half-step towards the door, even as the laughter is still coursing through him, making him feel more alive than he has in who fucking knows how long.
“You’re fuckin’ dead.”Â
Which comes from a voice Steve has grown to loathe in a few short months.Â
Billy goddamn Hargrove.Â
Steve turns, watches Billy stop on the other side of the table catastrophe. People are still screaming and laughing and running around – mostly, they’re running away from whatever the fuck is happening. Forming a perimeter around the spectacle, circling them like they’re in a fucking ring about to face off.Â
“Running. Running now.” Eddie says, which, yeah – Steve told him to, so why the fuck is he still here?Â
“Dude, go.” Steve half-whispers over his shoulder, still trying to push Eddie toward the door. But, Eddie is more of a solid pillar than he would’ve imagined.
“Uh, yeah.” Eddie says with all the sarcastic merit of a 5th grader. “Let’s.”Â
“Wh–”
“Jesus.” Eddie’s hand wraps hard around Steve’s bicep, full-bodily yanking him back toward the patio door.Â
Billy is honest-to-god actually growling at them, mouth open, like, teeth bared and shit, fists clenched at his sides as he stalks across broken glass and spilled punch, when Steve…
Well.
Steve holds up a finger, somehow actually making Billy stop a foot away, surprise etched on his face. Then, Steve grabs a half-empty cup left forgotten on a shelf by the door.Â
“Sorry, did you want some?” Steve asks before taking a sip. “How rude of me. Here.”Â
Then, in some feat of King Steve of days past, he takes a big mouthful, pulls down his sunglasses just enough and winks at Billy, before spitting the drink all over Billy. “Enjoy.” Steve croons as he throws the rest of the cup at Billy and blows him a fucking kiss.Â
Steve laughs hard as he turns and tumbles through the patio doors and out into a run across the yard with Eddie motherfucking Munson still holding onto him.
(Yes, pls join me in cackling that the smut fic ended up assigned to 69.)
So so so excited to announce that I'm participating in the 2026 Steddie bang, along with my incredibly talented artist and beta, @desolateyears!

Steve arrives at Pendleton Correctional with bruises he earned in holding, a uniform that hangs wrong on his shoulders, and a name nobody in the gallery came to defend. He keeps his head down. He learns the laws of the mess hall, the three corridors between Block C and the yard, the precise angle of not-quite-hiding. He does not expect to survive this, and he is not entirely sure that he wants to.
He does not expect Eddie Munson.
His cellmate takes up space like a thunderhead- unhurried, total, already settled into the room and the block and the yard long before Steve arrived and already decided about things Steve hasn't finished thinking yet. He smokes slowly. He watches everything. Within a week, Steve has learned the three distinct creaks of the lower bunk. The specific weight of being watched across a mess hall. The difference between the silence that precedes violence and the silence that comes before he feels owned. What it costs, in the dark, to touch himself without permission - and that it costs more to stop.
Munson doesn't ask for anything, because he doesn't need to. He simply identifies what Steve is with the calm, assessing patience of a man who has done this before and is not in a hurry, and waits for Steve to finish arguing with the confirmation.

Modern AU where Eddie rides a little viral moment into a music career, becomes one of the biggest acts in music...and now he's being trolled online.
There is a guy across social media platforms who comments under everything Eddie posts with a little 'Eddie Munson Fun Fact.'
It's very annoying because these facts range between mundane to embarrassing, and they're all true. This is clearly someone who is from Hawkins and went to school with him but Eddie has no idea who it could be.
Their profile picture is a poorly made ice cream cone and all their non-Eddie related posts are about StarCourt Mall conspiracies.
He'll post a little thank you to the fans or give updates on show dates, and without fail, Ice Cream Guy is there like, Fun Fact: Eddie Munson is a three time senior.
Fun Fact: Eddie Munson fell off a cafeteria table into a trash can once.
Fun Fact: Eddie Munson is a String. Cheese. Hater.
This guy is trying to get him canceled by Big Cheese.
Eddie's label hates him but his fans like him so Eddie kinda just deals with it because the engagement is good.
And then Eddie comes out.
He lets the whole world know he likes men and Ice Cream Guy is the first to comment under the post like, Fun Fact: I knew it.
Followed by: Fun Fact: Eddie Munson has a crush on me.
Eddie comments back: Prove it
Ice Cream Guy replies: Fun Fact: Ask me on a date first, freak
Eddie replies: How would I know it's you if I don't know who you are??
Ice Cream Guy says: You'll know.
Eddie's fan eat this up. They start bringing ice cream to his shows. They start making ice cream themed fan merch. They're drawing NSFW fan art of Eddie with a sentient ice cream cone.
Nothing really comes from this interaction and hype died down until one day, Eddie posts a photo of him and Steve 'The Hair' Harrington with the caption, Fun Fact: He was right.
Super exited to bring my project #32 @steddiebbang fic for 2026 from it's super secret potting shed.
In true me style I'm drawing inspiration from a childhood favourite, the wonderful 1986 musical extravaganza The Little Shop of Horrors.
The lovely @al-at-once picked my idea to create art for and wants to help it grow and I can't wait to see what they do with it!
And I get to work with the amazing @artsadvocatetrashcan again as my poor unsuspecting lab experiment / beta... i promised i wasn't going to write 180k words on this one and they better make sure I don't!
On the twenty-third day of September, in an early year of a decade not too long before our own, the human race suddenly encountered a deadly threat to its very existence... This terrifying enemy surfaced,as such enemies often do, in the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places.
A dying suburb on the edge of the big city. Hawkins was not the thriving metropolis it had once been.
The money upped and left years before, leaving little behind in its rush to kick up dust and go. The shadow of wealth still clung to the buildings, looming structures that once held finery and grandeur now housed thrift stores and discount wear houses. Laundromats and repair shops filled the spaces where coffee shops and bakeries had used to fill the street with sweetness and life.
Eddie Munson lived here. In this suburb of the forgotten, the ones that couldn't or wouldn't escape, the ones who were left behind. But he dreamed big.
He wanted to get out; he wanted to escape the shit hand that the world had dealt him. Eddie had come to the city looking for his big break, and he stayed because going back to his Uncle Wayne out in the boons would mean admitting he had failed.
He was alone. The rest of his band had called it a day, and now he lived in the tiny one-room apartment below the flower shop that had offered him work because he knew how to use a hose and could tell a weed from a rhododendron.
He didn't know much, but he knew plants, and that had saved him from returning to bumfuck nowhere with his tail between his legs.
Creel Flower Shop was exactly what you would expect from a plant shop in a built-up city suburb where most people only had a window box, or if they were lucky, a balcony to grow. Nothing new or exciting sat on the shelves; no, this was not a place for that, as much as Eddie would like to put his self-taught talents to better use.
Mostly, the owner, Henry Creel, left him to his own devices, and he filled his days with pottering around the shop, filling orders for the contract clients. The only thing that kept the shops' heads above water was that the Henderson's at the funeral home kept them in business. And when he wasn't fashioning wreaths for the dearly departed, the proximity to the subway meant occasional businessmen passing through from whatever whore house they had frequented, buying a bunch of perfectly cut roses to appease some of their guilt when they got home.
Eddie had a lot of time to think and curate his own little slice of paradise up on the roof.
You wouldn't think it if you were looking at him. The ripped jeans, the tattoos, the long hair, and the rings didn't exactly scream green fingers. But Eddie loved plants, the weirder the better.
Vriesea, Flaming swords, and Hemerocallis grew side by side, blooming under his careful care. He filled his spare time hunting for something new, something exciting, something that would make him famous. Eddie Munson, botanist to the president. Admittedly, it wasn't as cool as metal god. But at least he wouldn't have to rely on anyone else for his success.
On this day, it was a day just like any other.
Until it wasn't.
Eddie often bought plants from other local vendors, people who also liked the strange and unusual. Bauman Botanics and Exotic Goods sold everything from houseplants to bootlegged Russian vodka; the inventory varied depending on how much the owner, Murray, liked you, or how much, and what you could do for him in return.
Eddie had several exotic plants that he would never have seen in real life if it weren't for Murray's eccentric nature. So he didn't even bat an eyelid when the man in question flounced out of his shop, adorned in bright blue underpants and a housecoat looking like a bargain basement pimp.
He greeted Eddie by gesturing towards the table along the storefront. Showing off his new saplings, fully grown succulents, and sweeping vines that Eddie inspected with curiosity, even if he was not looking to buy.
Out of the stock before him, Eddie already had cuttings and mature plants in his collection, so nothing had caught his eye. Nothing piqued his interest, not even the creeping vine that seemed determined to snuff out the death's head clematis that bordered the shop door.
He was just about to say as much when the bright sunshine around them suddenly faded, darkness fell, and the street became quiet and subdued.
A total eclipse of the sun.
It lasted a second, if that, and Murray looked just as confused as Eddie felt. Nobody had mentioned they were due for a solar eclipse, yet there was no mistaking the astrological phenomenon currently taking place.
And just like that…
It was over. And when Eddie turned to ask Murray if he had any idea what that was all about, he noticed it.
A plant unlike anything he had seen before, nestling into a coffee can and leaning towards the returning sun.
Eddie reached to grab it, sure that the plant trembling was entirely in his mind.
It didn’t look like any of Murray's other plants, but he sold it to him anyway.

Credit card companies will TRY to saddle you with this kind of debt by the way - if ever a loved one dies and you are not co-signed on their credit card, do NOT agree to pay their debt unless you ask a lawyer first if you truly have to.
They will say “don’t you want them to go to the grave without debt”, they will try to guilt you, they will take advantage of your vulnerability.
Source: when my father died, he had some credit cards that my mom wasn’t on that she had no access to. The companies contacted her while she was sorting through the bills and getting a handle on how to run the house alone, badgering her with his credit card debt.
She wasn’t liable for any of it, but if she had ever agreed to pay before finding out that she didn’t need to, she would have been considered to have taken on his debt and would have HAD to pay it. It’s slimy, it’s predatory, and it’s entirely legal for them to do this.
Never accept the credit card company’s word about your obligation to pay anyone else’s debt, if you don’t have access to the card, ask a lawyer before agreeing to anything.
