This year I have been sensing a huge shift within myself. I’ve been feeling this overwhelming pull to take complete and utter ownership over my personal power in ways I didn’t realize I was neglecting before. ALL of my life I have been an overachiever when it comes to people pleasing. While that has come in handy in certain situations, it’s also resulted in me my neglecting my own needs and feelings. For me this looks like: Smiling when I don’t feel like smiling, but I do it anyway so everyone else feels comfortable. Agreeing or volunteering to do something I don’t want to do (or maybe shouldn’t do), but I don’t want to say no because then that might inconvenience someone else or hurt their feelings. Having something said to me that does not sit well, but I let it roll off my shoulders as to not rock the boat. I’m not saying there aren’t times when you will have to pick and choose your battles, but I am saying there’s a difference between picking and choosing your battles and setting boundaries. The problem for me is that my incessant need to people please results all too often in me censoring myself. I end up gaslighting my own thoughts and feelings before even giving them a fighting chance to be honored and heard.
