The final programme! I am so happy with how this turned out. Had I had more time, I would have liked to put in even more pages and make it the size of a proper professional programme, however I’m content with what I’ve presented. From the colour scheme, to the layout, the fonts and the photographs used, I am very proud of my final Performance Design Technology assignment for 2016.

The final pages of the programme, complete with a Telstra ad on the back page.
The image of the Lilac Fairy gown seen on the left hand side was one of the first images that I found during my research, and was a continual inspiration for the colour scheme and design of the programme. The quote on that page was taken from The Australian Ballet’s website, detailing the extraordinary work their costume ateliers are capable of.
On the opposite page are a continuation of biographies of the Creative Team - Set/Costume Designer, Lighting Designer and Sound Designer. I am so happy with how this programme has turned out and have had an absolute blast creating it.
For the next section of the programme, I decided to include a collage of professional photographs from the Australian Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty performances. These collages are seen in many professional programmes, and it was a good opportunity to showcase even more of the lavish and striking sets and costumes.
On the opposite page are the biographies and photographies of some of the creative team involved, including the Artistic Director, Ballet Mistress, and Music Director. Images were sourced from The Australian Ballet website.
The next four pages contained the synopsis for the show, outlining the story of the dance to come.
This was an opportunity for me to include some full double-page spreads of the official photographs from the show. The first photograph is from the beginning of the show, showcasing the fairies’ beautiful costumes. The second image shows the grandeur and sheer scale of the set design and the extravagance of the cast costumes. The text was wrapped around the major aspects of the images in order to showcase their beauty.

It took a long time to create a layout that was visually appealing and that I was happy with, while also being legible and easy to understand. I’m very happy with this final layout, as it is clean and striking while also conveying all necessary information.

The first two pages of the Programme (excluding the cover page which will consist of the promotional Poster design).
The image on the left is the promotional photograph from The Australian Ballet, over-layed with a recognisable quote from the Sleeping Beauty Disney film.
Following this is a photograph of the Artistic Director/Choreographer of the piece David McAllister, and some notes from him on the ballet itself.
The fonts used on this page are Typewriter Condensed, Roadway and Bebas from DaFont.com
The background image to be used for the majority of my Programme.
I used the roses from the original Sleeping Beauty promotional photograph and increased the contrast. I then over-layed the photo with a dark purple to dusky mauve gradient, so that the text and other relevant information would better stand out.

The Australian Ballet logo (top left) and the Arts Centre Melbourne logo (bottom right) were taken from Google images.
The texts used were Bebas, Roadway and Typewriter Condensed from DaFont.com.
I’m so happy with this design. It’s modern, sleek and edgy yet still captures the dreaminess and beauty of the Ballet. The focus is on the text so that the context of the poster is immediately recognisable, and the image is easily associated with the ballet and the Sleeping Beauty story.

The image was created using a rose texture image from a textures website, which was made black and white and a grain effect was applied to help it blend more easily with the focal images. The opacity was decreased and pink and purple watercolour splashes were placed underneath, to give the soft colour seen above.
I decided that I was happy with this design, but wanted to increase the intensity of the colours as they were too soft and unassuming.

The final background image. The pink and purple tones were intensified and a dark gradient was applied to the base of the image so that it blended easier with the dark purple rose petals in the main graphic.
The finished focal graphic for the poster. The purple rose was taken from a stock photo and the Paper Cutout Photoshop effect was applied to make it match the look of the rest of the image. Multiple layers of falling rose petals were applied to create the base of the image.
I wanted the design for my poster to be more stylised than photographic. I chose to have a ballet slipper and a hand holding a rose as the focal images of the piece, as these represent two of the most defining aspects of The Sleeping Beauty ballet.
To create this graphic, I found the original image (top left) and then converted it to black and white, cropping out the background (top right). I used Adobe Illustrator to create stylised, posterised effect seen in the final image.
For our next Performance Design Technology task, we were required to create a poster and programme for a show or event of our choosing using InDesign and other assistive programs such as Photoshop. Almost immediately, I knew I wanted to do the project on the Australian Ballet’s production of The Sleeping Beauty. The rich colours and extravagant designs provided lots of source material to work with, and I could really be passionate about the work I was creating.
This was the original image that inspired my design choices. It is an official promotional photograph for the ballet from The Australian Ballet’s website.

Editing the film in Final Cut Pro. Playing around with editing clips and sound bites, and adding background music.
For my PDT short film project, I chose to do a claymation stop motion animation. This was my first attempt at stop motion, so I had to do a lot of learning along the way. I used the iPhone App “Stop Motion Studio” to create the film, which was very helpful as it used “onion skins” - translucent layers of previous shots to help you set up the following scene. The film had no particular narrative, it was merely an exploration of claymation and an appealing, entertaining little film that hopefully brought some character to lifeless Fimo clay.
