An empty bed is a helluva thing to wake up to, Bill caught himself thinking groggily as he slipped the covers off of him the next morning, wiping sleep-filled eyes with the back of his hand. It wasnât quite sunrise, as he never was one to burn any daylight, and in the darkness of the pre-dawn he padded on bare feet down the hardwood floor, opening his door and sneaking out to the bathroom for a shower.
Lottie was not an early riser by nature, and Joe had to wake her up. She grumbled and hid under the sheets until her little brother hit with her a pillow square in the gut. She kicked her brother out of the room and got dressed quickly, favoring flattering pants and a blouse. She knew the blue pf the shirt went well with her coloring and when she sat down to pull on her shoes she winced at the sudden pull her in core. She moved a slower and pulled on her shoes before slinking out of her room to brush her teeth before she headed down to breakfast, schooling her face into something normal when she was nervous about Bill being there.Â
Bill and Mark were a before/after image spanning about forty years, both bleary-eyed and sporting stubble they hadnât gotten around to shaving yet, both in light undershirts with their long-sleeve plaid shirts hanging on their charis, cups of steaming coffee in their hands the only thing seeming to keep them vertical. Rose and Elsie, on the other hand, both were much more⌠chipper, about the morning than the men of the Meyers household, in the middle of laughing over a shared joke as their guests came into the dining room. âWell good morninâ, you two!â Rose called with a winning grin in Joeâs direction.
âHnnng.â Was about all the greeting Bill and Mark could manage as their cups came up to their lips in tired unison.
Lottie beamed at the sight of Bill, and then turned bright red. She seemed to be unable to stop herself from blushing at the sight of him. She ducked her head as Joe turned bright red at the sight of Rose and tripped over his own feet. He manged to right himself before tugging at his t-shirt a bit.Â
âGâmorninâ.â They said in unison, both of them stepping into the kitchen to help.Â
âNo, no, please, go sit.â Elsie gave them a shooing motion with her left hand, her right hand currently pulling bacon out of a pan with a fork. âGuests shouldnât have to bother themselves with fixing their own breakfast.â
âBill usually helps out, but heâs got a tendency to burn what he touches.â Rose muttered to Joe with a light bump of her hip as she moved past him, placing a pair of plates holding sausage and eggs on the table.
âI donât think Bill slept too good last night. Heâs dead to the worldâŚâ
âWonder why that could beâŚâ Rose teased quietly on her way back, just loud enough for Lottie to hear her as the little blonde gave another grin.
Joe turned bright red when Rose bumped his hip, unable to stop the grin that spread over his face at her antics. Lottieâs face turned red and she glanced to Bill who did look tired. The memory of taking him last night made her core ache with something akin need.Â
âAye, I slept jusâ fine.â Lottie said, her voice even despite the flush of color on her cheeks. She sat down at the table and took the chance to pour herself a cup of orange juice as Joe took the coffee pot.Â
Bill moved his hand with an almost sloth-like deliberation, his fingertips nearly getting one of the pieces of sausage before being rapped lightly by Rose as she placed another plate down. While that didnât wake him up quite fully, it did cause him to jerk his hand back and grunt more in surprise than pain. âOne oâ these days weâre gonna-ahhhhh-gonna catch you slackinââŚâ He grumbled, his admonished hand coming up to cover his mouth as he yawned halfway through the sentence. The young man glanced over at Lottie, his eyes slowly starting to lose the glazed look as the coffee began to kick in. âMusta been the new company in the house. Things change up in your homeân you donâ-hhhhh-you donâ sleep too well the first couple nightsâŚâ
âYeah, yeah, blame it on the guests.â Rose responded with a laugh, hand snaking out once more to smack the back of her fatherâs leathery paw as he reached for a piece of bacon.
âThatâs elderâs abuse.â
âTell that to your heart, Pa.â
Lottie turned a light pink and took a sip of her juice. âI slept jusâ fine.â She said.Â
âAs did I.â Joe said, doctoring his coffee to his liking and pointedly not looking at Rose. He was wearing slacks today, and a t-shirt.Â
âI have ta keep Joe from eatinâ too many waffles, so I understand yer plight Rose. Are ye sure ye wouldnea like some help?âÂ
âWhy? Itâs noâ like ye can cook.â Joe said before taking a sip of coffee. Lottie kicked him under the table, making him spill some coffee down his chin. He swore in Gaelic and glare at her.Â
Bill couldnât help but laugh at their antics, sneaking a wink at Lottie as Joe swore. âOh, donâ tell me a pretty girl cainât cook. We might just have to work on that.â
âFinish your coffee first.â Elsie replied in mock admonishment. âNo flirting at the breakfast table.â
âAwww but maaaaa.â Rose fake-whined in response, pouring herself and her mother some of the orange juice before sitting down, her now concealed foot lightly tapping Joeâs shin with a bare toe.
âIâve grown up a wee bit lucky.â Lottie said delicately. âThere was always someone else ta do the cookinâ fer us.â She hoped Bill wouldnât have found her too privileged.Â
Joe jumped under the table and spread his legs just enough for his leg to brush hers. âThis looks delicious maâam.â Joe said, smiling wide at Elsie.Â

He wasnât sure if Aaron minded his food touching, but he kept the sections from touching and avoided any sauces until Aaron got back from his phone call and could decide for himself.Â
The babble of English and Gaelic filled the room and Lottie bent her head to Joe, who knew what she was going to ask.Â
âAye, itâs Cu. He has ta tap inta the Other Guy ta see who it is.âÂ
âWe cannea do this in front oâ the others.âÂ

Aaron talked quietly on the phone for a few moments before hanging up âSorry about that, employee was a little confused about an order that she gotâ.
He took the plate off of John with a thank you and sitting at the table, he took a bite âHoly shit this amazingâ he said giving Ciaran a thumbs up. Aaron looked over at Lottie and Joe whispering together and gave them a raised eyebrow.
âSaved ye a plate.â John spoke softly before going back to his food. Mary leaned over her wheelchair and bumped shoulders with her brother, who smiled and bumped her gently back.Â
âIâm glad ye like it Aaron.â Cairan said, finally taking a seat after pouring himself a very full glass of wine.Â
âAaron, I need ta speak witâ ye. After dinner yeâll come witâ me anâ Joe ta the library. Mary anâ Ciaran, yeâll join us too.â Lottie said. The MacKenzies responded with a series of nods due to full mouths.Â

Aaron cocked an eyebrow at Joe whenever the voice called out about a girl âMy my Joe, do you often bring girls home? I think i need to rethink how i feel about youâ he said clapping him on the shoulder âWell come on time to disapoint the family about the fact your still singleâ
âHush, you.â Joe chided Aaron with a smile, unable to resist the good-natured ribbing.Â
âAye, letâs break their hearts.â He pushed open the gate and led Aaron through a well-kept kitchen garden and into the kitchen. It was filled with the smell of baking bread and cooking chicken, with Ciaran putting the finishing touches on dinner. Sam was repairing a bridle while Deidre did some reading by the fireplace. Mary and Sweetie were at the table, Mary doing something complicated with two knitting needles and multiple balls of yarn. The moment Joe crossed the threshold Mary gasped, needles dropping to the table.Â
âIâm fine, I ran afoul oâ a cat sidhe.â Joe said, holding up his hands. âAaron helped patch me up.âÂ
âAnd he bled all over my good leather seats tooâ Aaron said âAnd hes far from fine, if someone could check my work and make sure he doesnt rip is arm off doing something stupidâ
Aaron sniffed the air for a moment and his stomach rumbled âGod good something smelling staggeringly goodâ
âChicken parm tonight. Sam, will ye lay a plate fer Aaron?â Ciaran asked as he broke the door of the old bread oven, the clay crumbling to the floor. He set the heavy oaken door aside and quickly reached into the burning hot oven to grab the loaves with his bare hands, tossing them onto the butcherâs block work table of his. âAh, donâ listen ta him, Iâm fine.â Joe said.Â
âJoseph MacKenzie, whaâ happened ta ye?â Said a commanding voice from the doorway. All of them, Joe included, rose to their feet and then bowed or dropped into a curtsy with a mutter of âmy lairdâ.Â
âI ran afoul oâ a cat shide in Chicago when cominâ back from visitinâ the Carpenters. Aaron patched me up.â He answered meekly. The deference was habit and not remarked upon as Lottie strode to the head of the table, putting down her glass of whiskey.Â
âSam, first aide hit. Ciaran, hot water and a clean towel.â She ordered, sitting down. âJoe, to me.âÂ
The trio launched into business, Sam leaving the kitchen and Ciaran filling up the kettle before placing it on the stove.
âWell Lottieâ Aaron greeted not bowing instead giving her a one finger salute âHow old Merls?â he asked with a smirk before looking back to Joe âAlso you might wanna teach your meat head of the brother the of the phrase âgoing under the radarâ, the idiot walked across half of Chicago shirtless and covored in bloodâ
At that moment a thought crossed his mind âWait how did a fae get the best of you Joe? I thought you had a big fucking sword?â
âMâ big fuckinâ sword is in mâ room at the moment. I had a meetinâ witâ the king oâ the Chicago cat sidhe, I wasnea abouâ ta bring that inta his domain. Itâs peacetime.â He said. âI got no excuse fer thaâ.âÂ
âArthur is Arthur.â Lottie said. Only Joe knew that she was finding it harder and harder to agree with the Merlin, and that more and more the younger crowd of ladder climbers was catching her attention. Sam came back with the first aide kit just as Ciaran pulled the kettle and filled a bowl with warm water.Â
âAnâ as fer walkinâ arounâ like thaâ in Chicago; people look at me more when Iâm in a kilt.â Joe said with a shrug his good shoulder. Ciaran placed the bowl on the table with a clean towel just as a timer went off. He padded back to the kitchen as Joe bent his head toward Lottieâs ear.Â
âYe know how Aaron has Cu Chulainn in the back oâ his head. He says a member oâ the familyâs Morrigan-touched. I brought him ta here ta find out.â Joe was very good at reading his sister, who had been schooled to keep her face blank and composed. He could tell by the way her fingers dug into his bicep that she understood the significance of this.Â

Bill chuckled softly, pulling her closer as she yawned. âAinât heard you complain âbout me, yet, darlin,â he muttered, ânaughtiness anâ all.â
âOh Iâm noâ complaininâ when itâs jusâ the two oâ us.â She mumbled, accent growing thick with sleep.
âThink I might like to test that tomorrow.â Bill replied, a yawn garbling the last half of the sentence.
âAye, tomorrow.â Lottie gave him one last kiss before rising up and stretching. She hissed a bit at the soreness coming from her core, but she gathered up her nightdress anyway.Â
âIâll see ye at breakfast, aye?âÂ
Bill blinked as she stood. âYou⌠You sure you wanna be goinâ back to your room, Lottie? Woulnâ be the worst thing to wake up early with me.â
âBill, I donâ think itâs wise ta let the whole house know weâveâŚâ She turned bright red and quickly pulled her nightdress on.Â
âI think it prudent I go back ta mâ room.âÂ
âYeah⌠Yeah, that might make a bit oâ explaninââŚâ Bill grumbled lightly. âThat case, breakfast cainât come fast enough, darlinâ.â
âIâll see ye in the morninâ.â Lottie said, before sliding out of the room and padding barefoot back to her room. She crawled into the bed, the scent of Bill still on her skin as she drifted off.Â
âDamn, it looks like you pissed off a grizzly bear.â (Joe)
Joe looked up from where he was clutching at his shredded arm.Â
âAye, thaâs whaâs I get fer pissinâ off a cat sidhe.â He grumbled. âCan I come in?âÂ
