griffin’s intro nan’s intro 

griffin  had  seen  a  lot  of  odd  things  at  the  fair  so  far  --  a  clown  on  stilts,  a  weiner  dog  race  happening  in  some  weird  part  of  the  grounds,  and  deep-fried  donut  bacon  cheeseburgers  --  but  nothing  was  quite  as  unexpected  as  seeing  alice  from  work  on  the  bench  like  that.  griffin  paused  in  his  walk,  eventually  and  hesitantly  approaching  his  coworker  as  he  looked  down  at  her,  a  mixture  of  amusement  and  confusion  coating  his  features.  “  ...want  me  to  buy  you  a  water  ?  ”

NAN: i'll probably be crying a lot, is that okay with you? i don't want to ruin the mood of a sleepover

nan: it's just awful, seeing everyone just say such nasty things. and then we're still expected to be professional around them in the office? it's nearly impossible

griffin  and  phoenix  weren’t  the  type  of  brothers  who  always  let  the  other  know  where  they  were.  sure,  he  had  phoenix’s  location  on  for  emergencies  as  per  their  mom’s  insistence,  but  he  never  looked  at  it.  thus,  griffin  was  pleasantly  surprised  to  see  that  phoenix  was  at  coney  island  too,  in  high  spirits  and  a  good  mood  as  he  walked  up  to  him.  “  hey,  man,  look  at  this  shit,  ”  he  began  excitedly,  holding  up  a  bottle  of  pinnacle  cotton-candy  flavored  vodka.  “  i  didn’t  even  know  they  made  flavors  like  this  !  but  there’s  a  stand  by  the  funnel  cake  that  sells  all  sorts  of  fair-flavored  drinks,  and  the  guy  let  me  purchase  a  whole  bottle  for  half  off.  wanna’  try  it  with  me  ?  ”

griffin  wasn’t  the  biggest  fan  of  val  when  she  wasn’t  in  his  bed,  and  he  generally  tried  to  avoid  her  outside  of  the  four  corners  of  a  mattress.  she  was  rude,  and  ran  her  mouth,  and  griffin  was  too  peace-love-laughter-fun-woo  to  ever  really  rock  with  her  on  a  level  outside  of  sexual.  that  being  said,  he  still  tapped  her  shoulder  when  he  realized  she  was  standing  in  front  of  him  in  the  line  to  the  ferris  wheel;  it’d  be  rude  not  to  say  anything.  “  hey.  you  gettin’  on  this  thing  too  ?  ”

griffin  was  finishing  up  a  giant  cone  of  ice  cream,  the  sugary  substance  melting  on  his  tongue  as  he  happily  wandered  about  the  carnival.  he’d  already  gone  on  all  the  roller  coasters  the  fairgrounds  had  to  offer,  and  he  went  on  the  drop  tower  three  times.  coming  down  from  his  adrenaline  rush,  he  was  satisfied  with  roaming  around  the  space  and  enjoying  the  sunset  --  nothing  weird  should  come  of  that,  right  ?  and  yet  he  found  himself  suddenly  stopping  in  place,  crowds  of  people  moving  past  his  frozen  body  as  he  looked  at  the  girl  he  swore  he  shouldn’t  be  seeing  right  now.  “ ...soleil  ?  is  that  you ? ”

nan  hadn’t  planned  on  taking  up  masters’  offer  of  a  day-off  at  coney  island,  but  miscommunication  with  santos  landed  her  here.  after  her  brief  freak-out  (  followed  by  a  much  needed  cry  behind  the  hall  of  mirrors  )  nan  had  decided  she  might  as  well  do  one  thing  if  she  had  bothered  making  the  long  trip  to  the  carnival  anyways.  looking  down  at  the  map  of  the  island  in  her  hand,  she  was  figuring  out  the  route  to  the  candy  apple  cart  when  someone  bumped  into  her.  “  i’m  sorry,  ”  she  said  immediately  out  of  instinct,  map  now  crumpled  slightly  from  the  impact.  she  lifted  her  eyes  to  look  at  the  tall  figure  she  bumped  into,  and  felt  her  heart  leap  at  the  sight  of  hanbin,  felt  her  skin  prickle  at  the  touch  of  his  hands.  she  swore,  at  the  end  of  the  gala,  that  she’d  never  interact  with  her  ex  again;  it  was  for  the  better  --  and  yet  here  they  were  again.  “  hi,  ”  she  exhaled  out  as  she  blinked  up  at  him,  words  caught  for  a  moment.  maybe  one  day  she’d  be  table  to  talk  to  him  without  feeling  like  an  idiot  for  the  entire  duration.  “  yeah,  ”  nan  found  it  in  her  to  push  out  a  sheepish  chuckle,  fingers  toying  with  the  edge  of  the  map,  “  i  didn’t  think  i’d  be  running  into  anyone  from  work  here  either.  especially  considering  the  odds  of  how  many  other  people  are  here.  but...  it’s  nice  to  see  you  again.  ”

usually,  santos  and  nan  were  on  the  same  page  when  it  came  to  parenting  and  communication. they’d  never  really  had  any  arguments,  any  tiffs  because  everything they  decided  was  a  mutual agreement, from  what  foods  they’d  feed  sutton  to  the  people  they  chose  to  babysit  her.  so  imagine  nan’s  surprise  when  santos  didn’t  tell  her  he’d  be  taking  their  baby  to  the  carnival,  and  nan,  who  had  literally  no  plans  to  go  to  the  carnival,  came  back  from  a  grocery  run  to  a  baby-less  house.  she’d  broken  all  the  eggs  she  just  bought  from  the  way  she  dropped  the  paper  bag  in  worried  shock,  growing  agitated  and  scared  as  santos  nor  their  babysitter  picked  up  the  phone.  but  nan  figured  out  where  santos  was  after  looking  at  his  location,  and  when  she  arrived  to  coney  island,  she  thought  she’d  find  him,  and  tell  him  their  literal  child  was  missing,  and  then  they’d  freak  out  together.  so  why  was  she  looking  at  santos  right  now  with  sutton  ?  “  santos  beau  hathaway,  ”  nan  nearly  exploded,  using  his  government  name  for  the  first  time  since...  ever  ?  wow.  “  what  the  hell  are  you  doing  ?  ”

nan’s phone was dead, a direct product of draining her battery through constant phone calls and tear-streaked texts to allison, naeun, and soraya. she’d been avoiding the groupchat so much that it hadn’t been a contributor to her now dead phone, but she couldn’t help but wonder, as she stood uncomfortably on the boardwalk while her phone struggled to charge in a nearby port, what people were saying about her. God, as soon as she had power again, she was going to call a lyft and go home and maybe cry for the entire time it takes to complete an i love lucy rewatch.  she looked up when she heard a voice, form tensing up as she recognized this person to be a coworker. “ i don’t even see how that would work, ” nan murmured, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and looking away. “ how would mermaids participate in a parade ? ”

nan: i wish i could just leave the chat. it's not fun seeing what everyone has to say and comment

NAN: that sounds lovely but are you sure? i don't want to bother you

NAN: no one was supposed to know about this and now /everyone/ does

nan: no, but thank you. you're too kind

nan: but now everyone knows and i feel like explaining myself will do absolutely nothing

griffin  had  only  come  down  to  the  lobby  to  pick  up  a  package  left  for  him  there,  but  he  wasn’t  mad  that  his  simple  task  was  intercepted  by  conversation  with  east.  “  hey,  west,  ”  he  greeted  warmly,  leaning  comfortably  against  the  wood  of  the  receptionists’  desk.  he  pursed  his  lips  at  the  question.  “  your  ideas  scare  me  sometimes,  but  sure,  hit  me.  ”
