“Sitri…I am sorry. The child does not breathe. We tried, but…there is no life in her.”

New tears began to stream down Sitri’s ashen cheeks. Her weakened body was too compromised even to tremble from the exertion of childbirth, cross-eyed with fatigue even as she clutched desperately at the unmoving infant on her bare chest. “But…I felt her move but hours ago! She was alive!”

Rhea grimaced. “She was connected to you then, supported by your life force. Sometimes babies are unable to survive on their own.”

Sitri burrowed her face into the child’s womb-damp hair with a muffled sob.

“We must get you healed,” Rhea said flatly, preparing a healing spell. “There is no time.” The moment was tragic, but she was the only other person in the room. She had delivered this child herself, the same as how she had never allowed another healer to lay their hands upon Sitri’s body. There was too much danger of discovery; she was too unique.

This child would have been her granddaughter, in a sense. However, all she could feel was disappointment. ‘Subject number thirteen: failure’ echoed in her mind.
