The young man in the prime of his youth thinks himself invincible and impossible to overpower, until old age reminds him that he's a being with weak joints and nimble knees and wrinkly skin.

The young woman at the peak of her youth takes pride in the liveliness of her body and the brilliance of her charm, until old age reminds her of the lines in her face, and the folds in her skin.

Time humbles everybody in the end. Outer beauty greys and sags, it falls off eventually.

What never ages is good character, though. Also called husnul khuluq in Islamic thought.

Ironically, it's something we often ignore working on and developing. We spend hours on working out and strengthening specific muscles, and hours on make-up to highlight specific facial features. Yet how many minutes a day do we take out for self-reflection, for morally assessing our intentions, our words and our actions during the day?

For many ancients, voluntary solitude was this high, ideal thing, in almost all spiritual traditions you find the character of ‘the one who takes to seclusion’ and experiences an opening.

To us, however, solitude is either an imprisonment technique — so you have ‘solitary’ confinement — or just a fun vacation where we have a blast to try and recover from the overdrive of the way of life we will soon be returning to.
