Hello! Blog owner here :) My name is Kemon!
I discovered âThe Shapeshifting Detectiveâ and its community like 5 years too late </3 So Iâm adding more things to the tag, haha!
This is just a silly side-blog, so I donât think Iâll be active much! But Iâll post when I can :)
When I saw Rayne in-game, I thought his dialogue was so funny! He instantly became one of my favorite characters (alongside Chief Dupont and Bronwyn!)
Anyways, I hope I can do my boy (and the game) some justice, haha! I hope you like the blog :)
Hereâs also a Rayne playlist I made (and my favorite song from it)!
ALSO! I was able to put the embedded links in the blog description by going to this website and copy/pasting the HTML code! I hope it'll also be of use to you <3

1. Introduce us to your f/o! Who are they, and what's their source?
My f/o is Lawrence âRayneâ Petrovsky from the 2018 FMV game called âThe Shapeshifting Detectiveâ! He prefers to go by Rayne.
2. Was there a specific canon moment that made you fall for your f/o?
No specific moment, but his general politeness, his smile, and how he can be such a nerd at times! Heâs also just a very silly guy in general when he wants to be :)ďżź
3. Does your f/o have a love interest in canon? How do you navigate around that with your selfship?
No! Well, kinda?? [Obligatory spoilers for the ending]
At the end of the game, if Rayne isnât the killer in your playthrough, he and his friends will leave and as you both say goodbye, you can choose to kiss him! In this case, you, the player, are the protagonist named âSamâ.
It was really surprising to me (in a good way) because thereâs absolutely NO foreshadowing of a romantic route for him! However, there was one for Lexie; things like telling her (as other characters) that Sam likes her, and her talking about Sam throughout the game.
Idk why DâAvekki Studios went with a romantic end for Rayne, but Iâm really glad they did! Haha
4. Does your s/i meet your f/o before, during, or after canon?
During canon! My s/i would be given the alias, Sam, by Agent X like the gameâs cannon. But over time, Sam would begin to âdeviateâ from Agent Xâs programming and expectations (like DBH I suppose). Since we donât know WHAT exactly Sam is, Iâm HCing that they are some sort of Traveler-variant who can shapeshift, since thatâs their main ability in the game!
Since Rayne becomes friends with Bronwyn and Lexie before the start of the game (and assumably have already been friends for a few years before the investigation), Iâm gonna say that Bronwyn and Lexie met in college, while they met Rayne at a bar. Then Rayne and I met on April 9th, 2018 (in-game) during the Dorota Shaw investigation!
5. Is your selfship canon-compliant, canon-divergent, or a full AU?
I LOVE the gameâs canon, so I make sure my lore and headcannons as close to the source-canon as possible!
However.. since we donât really get a lot of info on the Tarot Gang (Rayne, Bronwyn, and Lexie) and stuff like how they met, what Sam is/does, Agent Xâs organization, the town of August, etc, I have to make stuff up, which is completely fine by me!
ďżź
6. What's a piece of canon lore you refuse to change about your f/o, even for the sake of your selfship?
I guess the setting! We donât really know where the three live, so I just kinda stuck them in London, England, where the three live together!
A better answer would probably be Rayne being the true murderer of Dorota Shaw- a young woman who died in the town of August.
Since Dorotaâs killer is randomized each playthrough (which can be either Violet, Zak, or Rayne), my specific lore involves Rayne being possessed by a Traveler, blacking out, the Traveler strangling Dorota, then Rayne waking up in Dorotaâs house.
All of that, up to Rayne waking up right after she dies, is mainly canon-compliant. In the actual game, he wakes up in his guesthouse-bedroom, but my interpretation is more fun, heh heh.
7. What's a piece of canon lore that absolutely had to change for your selfship to work?
Uhh, none I guess?? Although I do have to make up a bunch of headcannons and assumptions about the characters.
8. What part of your f/o's story felt like it was missing something that your s/i was able to fill?
Iâm not really sure! I guess having another person to talk to and to provide emotional support (besides Bron and Lex)!
9. What's a piece of canon lore about your f/o do you happily ignore?
I donât think this is canon because itâs mentioned literally NOWHERE in the game, but an LGBT-posting account on here said a long time ago that Rayne is MLM sexuality-wise. I literally have NO idea if thatâs true, or how that assumption was made, but since Iâm nonbinary (like the protag ig), I just ignore it.
10. What canon event, which your f/o was involved in, would have gone differently if your s/i had been there? (positive or negative)
I suppose none! Well, no event I would want to change. The trauma heâs experienced from Hong Kong and Birmingham are both too significant to his character, imo. Both locations reaffirm his best character traits, as in how heâs loyal to his friends, his devotion as a Traveler-hunter, and how willing he is to bend the law to save people (which then asks questionâs like âis it morally justifiable to break the law to feed your starving family?â).
Also, trying to keep a possessed person from killing themself is too insane of a lore-canon event to change!
11. What part of your f/o's backstory hurts the most to think about?
Definitely when he was in Hong Kong! Bronwyn and Lexie werenât with him for some reason, so he was on the roof of a skyscraper chasing a possessed woman (her name is stated to be Victoria Cheng).
Since the Traveler was caught and thus unable to complete their Rite, it jumped off the building! Itâs so insane- Rayne was holding onto her foot and other passerbyâs thought HE was trying to kill HER! In the end, he couldnât hold onto her for long and she died..
After the word of her death, he was deemed a suspect in her murder, which is why he now goes by âRayneâ instead of Lawrence. He was never arrested or sent to jail, but he is always wary of going to prison. Because of this, he will avoid any talk of âLawrence Petrovskyâ and if questioned about his name, he denies any connection to âLawrenceâ. This is all cannon btw.. my poor baby đ
In due time, he would eventually feel comfortable with telling me his real name (even though Sam already knows, from Dupont telling them about it).
12. What's an important event in your f/o's canon to help others understand them better?
I guess Hong Kong and Birmingham..?? He is very dedicated to his âdutyâ of hunting down Travelers, even though if he ever talks about their existence, others would think heâs crazy! Itâs an unspeakable job that never ends, since basically millions of people are killed by Travelerâs every day.
13. What quote or scene from your f/o's canon lives in your head rent free?
I have a few! Hehe
âQuantum physics is real, didn't you know?â
âBOO! Haha, sorry.. Couldn't help myselfâ (There are a handful of jumpscares in-game, and this is one of them!)
âMy hands hurtâ (I havenât gotten this specific dialogue yet, but this is if you shapeshift into Lexie when heâs the killer in your current playthrough)
âScream if you need me!â (One of my favorites, lol)
âBeen feeling possessed lately?â (When you shift into Bronwyn and deliberately choose wrong dialogue options. Itâs an achievement!)
âWow, Sam- I didnât know! This changes everything.â (When you choose to kiss Rayne at the end of the game)
(This convo bc itâs so funny!)
Rayne: âWeâre trying to save people
Sam: âItâs not working.â
Rayne: âI said weâre trying.. :(â
14. Does your f/o die in canon? Did you change that, or keep it tragic?
Thankfully not! Although I do HC him getting a chronic illness of Cerebral Hypoxia after the Traveler possesses him.
Itâs kind of tragic since he wouldnât be able to run for long periods of time, which is sometimes crucial to catching possessed people.. and among other things like more frequent headaches, brain fog, possibly not being able to drive, etc.
15. Go to your f/o's wiki page. Give us one fact from the "trivia" section! If they don't have one, share a random fun fact about them many may not know!
He doesnât have any wiki pages, unfortunately (besides one mention in the TV Tropes page for the game!) đ
But a random fact of his is that he spills trivia facts when heâs nervous! Itâs so silly and I love how he knows the most obscure trivia <3
Another fact is that heâs not religious, but does believe that anything is possible! He also believes in time-travel, space-travel, and the multiple-realities theory!
16. FREE REIGN - Infodump about your f/o's lore, your selfship lore, or literally anything related!!
I suppose I could rant about Travelers and my theories about them! :)
âTravelersâ, shortened from âtime-travelersâ are spirits of dead people who used to live in a different reality from ours. They are people from the future who have figured out how to use time/space-travel. If they die in our reality while time-traveling, their spirit is permanently stuck in our reality!
Since their goal is to get back to their reality, they must complete a Rite (rite of passage) by âwreaking havoc in our world,â which is rewarded in theirs. I think, once they complete their Rite, they receive enough energy to return to their reality! However, I also think they kill people for sport, but they mostly do it to complete their Rite.
They always kill 3 victims which share a common attribute (like hair color, skin tone, etc). Travelers âbody-surfâ from victim to victim via âinter-dimensional time travelâ. You canât force them to leave your current timeline, since they could theoretically inhabit the victimâs body indefinitely. But to see if theyâve truly left a victimâs body (and the current timeline), youâd need to do a reading with Mercury, the sentient(?) tarot deck that belongs to Bronwyn. Mercury will let you know from a reading when a Travelerâs left our timeline.
Also, since Sam is employed by the mysterious âAgent Xâ (humorously named Jared, after the characters actor), I have a theory that Sam is a TYPE of Traveler! Since Sam is a shapeshifter, and can be given different powers via âaugmentationâ by Agent X, there must be different types of Travelers, too! :)
There could also be rogue Travelers, aka those who arenât employed by Agent X or another mysterious org. So there are good Travelers (like Sam) and ones who kill people, I guess. Itâs very interesting to think about!
Thank you for reading! I had A LOT of fun filling this out! Bye <3
Hello! This post is mainly ooc, but I did write some lore in here đ
Itâs mainly stuff youâve already encountered by playing the game, but I also put my theory of Travelers at the end, if youâre interested in that! :)
âI was in my room, I was praying.. but then I woke up- my hands hurt.â
Full quote: âLex, uh.. I donât know what I was doing the night Dorota died. I donât know- I donât remember. I was in my room, I was praying.. but then I woke up- my hands hurt. My hands hurt! Donât you tell Bronwyn.. sheâs got enough going on. Donât tell anyone.â (Unfortunately, I live for angst. Lol)
âScream if you need me!â
âBeen feeling possessed lately?â
If you try getting the âCross with Bronwynâ achievement :)
âWow, Sam- I didnât know! This changes everything.â
If you choose to kiss Rayne (+ the killer is arrested) <3
âWeâre definitely gonna have trust issues for a while.. But Iâll get over it.â
Heâll say this if you choose to arrest Rayne when he isnât the killer (probably paraphrasing the quote, rip)
(This Sam and Rayne convo is so funny to me!)
Rayne: Weâre trying to save people.
Sam: Itâs not working.
Rayne: I said weâre trying.. :(
The sad face he makes in-game is so adorable! Haha

The Night of Dorota Shawâs Murder (Traveler!Rayne)
Might rewrite this! When I do, Iâll update the post :) I also have this on AO3, as well!
Hereâs the fic, but on AO3! :)
On the cold afternoon of April 8th, Bronwyn was sitting on her bed; shuffling Mercury and preparing for a group reading that will be in a few minutes. The tarot deck has become a companion for the three over the years.
As Bronwyn, Lexie, and Rayne hesitantly pulled one card each, the combined cards said: the 5 of Cups, 10 of Swords, and The Tower. That was never a good sign.. Three victims they need to save. The three of them looked up at each other, eyes filled with worry, but also curiosity. Where would they need to go this time?
Without a word, Lexie quickly got up from the floor and ran to her room to get her Ouija Board. It's how the three know who they need to save and where to go. They patiently wait for Lexie to come back to Bronwyn's room; they need a name, place- anything that could give them a direction or a starting point. A few minutes later, after fiddling with the board in her room, Lexie came back and said only the words "August, England." âWell, at least it's not Birmingham,â Bronwyn thought to herself; the place they went to a few months ago.. that mission, or rather job, was a disaster.
The future victim, the three later found out, is named âDorota Shawâ. After some more prompting from Lexie with Dorota's future spirit, it finally told them that she has red hair. That's all they had to go off of, but it was better than nothing.
Sometimes the board only gave them a name, and nothing else. Regardless, the three hopped into Bronwyn's car and headed to August; it wasnât far from where they were.
That same day, they arrived to the town. Bronwyn instructed Lexie and Rayne to look for a place where they can stay for the next few nights. Rayne and Lexie hop back into the car, and the three temporarily parted ways. After some time walking, Bronwyn found herself face-to-face with a building labeled "Investigative Agency.â Perfect.
With a deep breath, Bronwyn pushed the double-doors open with confidence. The police had to believe her, it's all they have. After scanning the area for a minute, she spots a table at the front with a receptionist; she seems nice. As she walked up to the table, she worried herself about not wanting to sound rude or blunt. But she stopped the thoughts in her head with, âthatâs not a concern right now, stop worrying.â To be fair, she probably would anyways, but that's not important right now. After asking the lady where the head inspector was, she was told the room number and his name- Dupont. âSounds pretentious,â she thought. Regardless, she went down the small hallway to his room, labeled 'Chief Dupont. Head Investigator.â Here it is! She gently knocks on the door and hears a middle-aged, but chipper, voice respond with, "Come in!"
Hesitantly, she enters the room. Sheâs normally not religious, but prays to whoever's listening at the moment, 'please let him understand, please don't let him think we're crazy.â
Bronwyn quickly greets the chief as she tries her best to explain the tarot reading her and her friends received earlier today, the name they got- Dorota Shaw, and how she'll likely be murdered the next day. As she explains with urgency in her tone, Bronwyn sounds more frantic by the second. When she finally stops to take a breath, Dupont puts his hands on the desk and clasps them together. He closes his eyes in thought and takes a breath before replying, "Dorota? She recently got accepted to Juilliard; The whole town's been celebrating. Your little 'card game' can't possibly know she'd be murdered."
Before Bronwyn could get a word in edgewise, Dupont dismissively held up a finger. "I don't want to hear it. That's preposterous and I will not entertain your games. The door's behind you." Bronwyn couldn't even interject with a 'But!-', as Dupont coldly replied, "The door. Please close it on your way out." Defeated, Bronwyn leaves the office with her head down, feeling hopeless. She wonders what she'll tell Lex and Ray.. she hates when Lexie feels disappointed. She hoped theyâd have better news.
Outside the building, Bronwyn pulls out her phone and calls Lexie. When she picks up, she asks with a hopeful tone how Bronwyn's search went. Bronwyn almost didn't have the heart to tell Lexie that it was hopeless. Almost.
After recollecting her's and the Chief's unproductive chat, she could hear Lexie and Rayne heavily sigh on the other line. "That's too bad, I'm sorry Bron.." After a pause, Lexie's voice perks up as she exclaims, "But we have some good news! This nice lady, Violet, is willing to let us rent some rooms at her guesthouse! Isn't that great??" Bronwyn responded with affirmation as Lexie sent her the guesthouse's location. As Bronwyn makes her way there, the two girls talk about the house, accommodations, etc.
That evening, the three settle into their respective rooms and unpack their bags. Lexie asked Violet that the three be next to each other. Violet obliged, which was a relief.
In room 3, Rayne was reading a book like he does every night. As he sits in the slightly-uncomfortable wooden chair by his bed, he read a paragraph, then suddenly blacked out.
He wasn't sure what happened, but when he came-to, he woke up in an unfamiliar room. 'This definitely isn't mine..' Rayne thought as he realized his hands were wrapped tightly around something.. or rather someone.
When he looked to the floor in-front of him, he saw a young red-haired woman, who has a fearful expression on her cold, pale face. 'Well, that must be Dorota..' Rayne cringed at the sight of her as he quickly tore his hands away from her neck, like he got burned from a hot stove. As he slowly got up, he scanned the room. He didn't seem to be injured, besides his hands. They hurt like hell. âMy hands must have been there for at least four minutes.â
Looking away from the bloody sight before him, he brought his hands up to his face, inspecting them. They're messy with dried blood. The blood must be hers.. "Oh god.. what the hell?" He quietly said to himself, in horror. He'd never met the poor girl- why, and how, did he know where she lives, and where her room was..?
He hesitantly looked back at Dorota. It seems he strangled her, evidently by the now-dried blood around her throat and mouth. He tried remembering what happened a few hours ago. He concluded that since he had no memory of what happened after reading in his room, and no idea of how he got to her house, he must have been possessed. There was no way heâd murder a stranger- by manual strangulation, no less. He had to have been possessed by a Traveler and they killed Dorota. 'Of course it wasn't me, how the hell would I know where she lived??â It had to have been for a Rite- he mentally noted to ask Bronwyn about those tomorrow. She knew more than he did on the subject. But right now, he understood the predicament he was currently in.
After gathering his bearings for a few minutes and finally calming himself down, he quietly walked around the house. He needed a close escape. There had to have been no one else besides her that was home- others would have heard the struggle. After wandering the hallways helplessly for a few minutes, he finally found a backdoor, and left. Outside, he felt colder than the night air that was brushing against his face.
When he came back to the guesthouse, no one seemed to notice he was gone. He thought it was odd, but didn't question it. After cleaning himself up in a bathroom, he entered his room and ungraciously flopped onto the bed in exhaustion. Dorota's eyes, wide from fear, and his own bloody hands haunted him; they most likely will every night, even after the three leave August. After about an hour of anxious thoughts and trying to calm his mind, he was finally able to go to sleep. The night wind quietly rustled the trees as everyone slept.
