Our Garden Under Heaven is heavily based on a Clangen save, but please do not anticipate it sticking closely to canon Warrior Cats lore. Names, places, and in-universe laws will vary very greatly, and cannot be interpreted through the lens of canon Warrior Cats. While Clan Generator is used as an inspiration for the story, many liberties are taken in order to maintain the flow of the story.
Our Garden Under Heaven is a slice of life, Biblical-inspired fantasy. It takes place far in the past, and pulls much of its inspiration in story, characters, and setting from Bible stories. The story you are about to read is explicitly about religious trauma and existing within a theocratic society that often affects characters negatively. I am heavily critical of most religion and magical thinking, and this story is made as a partial reflection of past experiences with the church as well as my own complicated nostalgia. This blog is not a place for evangelism of any kind. No attempts to argue or convert anyone will be tolerated, and you will not be given a second chance if I see it.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR -
You can call me JJ (he/him | in my twenties | βοΈ). I consider myself far more of a writer/author than an artist, and this is the first and only comic I have ever made. I have been reading Warrior Cats since I was 8, and playing Clangen for YEARS now. This project began mostly as art practice and a good excuse to try new things and experiment with my art. Please expect plenty of mistakes and inconsistencies with my art style, and be patient with me as I continue to struggle to understand how Tumblr works.

I am also active under the same user in the Clangen Creator Discord, which is a great place to come find me if you want to connect. Otherwise, I don't use social media very much. I do also have a Kofi, which I don't advertise much bc frankly monetizing my art scares me very much. But if you feel compelled to pay me, I won't stop you lol.
Please keep in mind I work a real job outside of this space. I have 3 cats and a partner to feed! I sometimes have to put the comic on breaks in order to make sure I don't run out of steam.

We had 48 people submit quilt blocks for our pride quilt for this month's event and we've created an awesome spread representing the clangen creator community's pride. As usual if you have a question about who drew a particular square we can probably identify them for ya :3
Is "our garden under heaven" intentionally mirroring "our father who art in heaven"? Or is that a happy accident
it was taken into consideration, even if it wasn't the main thing that got me there. i like a title that works on a lot of levels so it's a huge bonus ;p
it plays into an aspect of writing the comic that i often call "bible-speak" which is just my way of saying "these cats talk VERY formally." i opt out of it when the conversations are very casual or if the cats talking are either very young or very close, but i do try to keep the way cats speak at least a bit consistent. i like the tone to feel biblical, even if there isn't a one-to-one story or verse being referenced.
Just a clarification question, is Eel's new name spelled Eelbite or Eel Bite?
Eelbite!! All one word :3 it's a more old fashioned sounding name (a distinction that is more relevant to the cat's themselves than readers π€ think of it like an 'old lady name' or just smthn that has fallen out of fashion), more in line with Angelwing and Imptail in sound and structure than the other Gardeners.
Within GardenClan, names are always picked by the parents unless stated otherwise - Mulberry Wine just "gives" the name out of tradition. He's already leading the ceremony, and since Honey Fruit was the first cat he properly named (a name that WAS picked by him) the entire set up for a naming ceremony stuck. Especially for Eelbite, who is so new, he really wanted to make sure she felt like a part of the group, and this was a good way to do that. ALL OF THAT TO SAY that Fisher just isn't super familiar with the naming conventions within the desert, so Eel wasn't given an older sounding name deliberately, it just kind of worked out that way.
There's not really a stigma around a different type of name, it's just sometimes an indicator that a cat's parents have a preference or their own traditions to keep up. "-bite" feels like an obvious choice given her fighting talent and sharp snout and fangs, and she did also prove herself worthy of a full name in battle. Fisher also took into consideration her swift and direct personality, and her sharp wit. "-bite" sounds very decisive, after all. Though if you asked him directly, he'd probably say he named her after her "winning smile."

What game mode do you use for the story? Is it classic or expanded?
Expanded !!! And i play on the development branch 'cause I am too impatient to wait for updates to hit the stable version.
I also play with some tweaks to the game's code: My death chances are increased (not that it matters bc i LOVE to reroll a moon) as are my injury and illness ones. My relationship values are also turned up, so even small interactions reflect a bit higher in the relationship screen. I also have the maximum number of interactions raised slightly, and the maximum amount of cats that greet new ones is raised as well. My chances of romance patrols are higher. My pregnancy cooldown is set to 9-12 moons instead of 6 to help a bit with overpopulation. My patrol difficulty is higher. Medcats maximum graduating age is 36 instead of 30. Torties, colorpoints, vitiligo, and permanent condition chances are all slightly increased. Accessory chances are decreased bc i hate drawing them.
There are probably other chances I've made too, but I can't recall all of them off the top of my head. I have been playing ClanGen a LONG time, so I've very much narrowed down the tweaks I need to make to keep things entertaining to me. I hope one day the developers will let me increase the chances of mass extinctions too, but for now this works fine.
The funniest part of all of this is that very few of these changes are ever relevant within the comic. I mentioned above, but I reroll moons often if I don't click with the events that happened. ClanGen, to me, is more of an inspiration generator than a set of plot points to have to stick to. It's very fun having a random element to the story, and convenient to not have to make characters from scratch, but the greater story I want to tell will always take priority bc I'm the writer and this is how I have fun doing it. Lots of events are cut, especially health related ones. Lots of events are reworked or interpreted broadly. Some are pulled out of my ass if I need them badly enough. I consider myself the storyteller here, so I will always have the final say over ClanGen at the end of the day.
Probably the most helpful and relevant change to in my code as far as the comic is related is the increased relationship event maximum. It gives me more to work with and helps me craft a scene around several events, with a cast that feels like every cat in the Clan interacts. My biggest issue with the relationship values is often that it frustrates me when cats who live together and work together every day seem to have No Relationship At All. I care a lot about the friend groups that seem to repeatedly pop up in the relationship events. Grief events also require a certain amount of relationship values, and i am pretty devastated when cats die and no one grieves them. It just doesn't feel realistic or like a community to me without it, so once again, it helps to just give the game a little extra juice.
Behind the scenes update..... moon 55 is fully sketched..... halfway rendered. It's taking me forever bc my stupid ass decided it needed to be over 30 pages long.
My goal is to work on it alongside artfight and have it finished by the end of July. I've never had a moon take this long (or be this long) so I know it's just. The way it is. But it's SO HARD setting realistic expectations for it lol. I want to be DONE.
