I was beyond grateful to finally build the foundation of my music career. Everything from the studio sessions and radio interview all feel like a dream come true. Knowing how much work it is to be signed to a record label alone takes time and effort.
Thanks to Dr. Brown he was able to make it happen in a short span of time a little over a month. I’m not sure how he does it but I truly admire his ambition. I sat on the floor Indian style listening to some beats that I can use for the song I was working on The Worst.
They say your darkest hours come before your dawn and I witness that in my past relationships before O’ryan and I became an item. When I met him I knew he was the one and it took me sometime to realize I had an amazing guy.
You never know you have a good thing until it’s gone forever. A tear cascaded down my golden brown cheek. When I heard a knock on the door I quickly wiped my face getting up to answer it. On the other side of the threshold I was greeted by Dr. Brown giving me a toothy smile in a well-fitted navy blue suit.
“Good morning Ms. Chilombo.”
“Good morning.” His presence caught me by surprise considering it was his first time visiting us at the house normally nurse Judy would come check on us.
“I see you doing better.” He said examining my face referring to the puffy bags that use to sit heavily under my eyes now they were barely visible.
“Yeah I think my bed is more comfortable here.” We both shared a laugh.
“Well I’m glad to hear that I stopped by to talk to you guys before I go out of town everyone is downstairs I came up to get you.”
“Oh okay give me a minute I’ll be down.” With that I closed the door and put on my pajama pants since I had on shorts. I don’t wear shorts around the house because I would have a million questions flying in my direction; it’s best to leave the unknown, unknown. After I was done I met the others downstairs in the living room.
“Okay now everybody is here first off I want to say you guys are showing major improvement. I’m proud of each and every one of you it’s a hard process I know. I see your new buddy attached to you already.” He said rubbing Supa on the head while he sat in his favorite spot on Nicolé’s lap.
“If ya’ll need anything or think someone could use something to help with recovering don’t hesitate to tell me so I can make it happen. I made arrangements for all of you to live together for a reason even though your conditions might be different it’s on thing you guys want in the end that is the same.” We nodded in response. “I came over here today to tell you I will be out of town for a few weeks on a business trip to the west coast.”
“What will we be doin’ Doc while ya gone?” August asked the question I’m sure we were all thinking.
“You guys actually have a full schedule while I’m gone. I made sure to talk to everyone so Olyviah and August your studio sessions are set then I have another interview in the works. We have potential hit singles I would like you to work on a foundation of an album.
My eyes lit up and the words got caught in my throat. I can’t believe an ALBUM I was thinking to myself. What would I call it? So many ideas ran through my mind. Yeah I been writing for a while so I had a wide selection of songs I can possibly put on the album.
“Nicolé you will be meeting with a couple magazine companies and you also have an important photoshoot booked I rather keep with who a surprise. Now Jermaine I spoke to the Lakers coach and he would love to meet you. But I told him we could set up a date after I get back I can’t have you traveling yet. You do have your normal practice days so nothing changed. Well I think I covered everything.” He said glancing at his watch.
“Oh wait I did want to tell you that today you’re allowed to go anywhere but of course the rules still apply. The driver is responsible for you like always so he will drop you off and pick you up. If there’s an emergency you can call nurse Judy but if you can’t get in contact with her you know how to reach me.”
“Okay thanks a lot Dr. B.”
“Your welcome but don’t thank me I’m just doing my job. Please be on your best behavior while I’m gone. He said in a stern voice grabbing his brief case.”
“You don’t have to worry about that Doc.” Jay reassured Dr. Brown we wouldn’t be a problem.
“That’s what I like to hear remember what I said that you are here to help one another.”
Dr. Brown left we stayed in the living room deciding on where we wanted to go. Honestly I don’t care because I like being out the house to get inspiration from nature outside.
“We can go to the mall then maybe the movies after.” Nicolé suggested.
“I’m down fo’ wateva if it’s not late a nigxa can’t do a movie late I might fall asleep knowin’ how ya females shop.”
“If not a movie maybe laser tag.” Jay said throwing another idea out there.
“Oh hell yea laser tag girls against da guys losers pay for dinner later.” The guys gave each other some dap.
“You such a big kid.” When those words left her mouth I saw a pillow flying across the room. Supa got up started barking at Jay.
“See Supa got my back he going to get you keep playing.” I just sat back giggling at the whole situation.
“Why ya so quiet whatchu want to do?” I didn’t even notice him sit next to me because I was too busy looking at Nicolé and Jay.”
“It doesn’t matter I’m down for whatever but I don’t disagree with what ya’ll want to do.”
“Aight jus makin’ sure.” He winked causing me to smile his mirrored mine.
“Lets get ready guys and stop wasting time. Meet down here at a quarter to one.” We went upstairs to get dressed. I was in the shower standing under the head letting the pellets of water beat down on my skin. Grabbing the loofah I lathered it with my favorite Mango Passion fruit body wash then started to wash the structure of my body. After I was satisfied with my hygiene I turned off the water and got out the shower. The bath towel was wrapped tightly around my body with another covering my curly mane as I thumbed through the outfits in my closet. I finally decided on distressed boyfriend jeans with a crop top and a pair of red chucks.
Looking at my phone I was done in the nick of time. I heard the others talking in the hall I guess they was ready. When I stepped outside my room I saw August eyeing me from head to toe but I pretended to be interested in my phone. Jay locked up the house while the rest of us piled into the truck.
“Where to?” The driver asked.
“The Lynnhaven Mall.” Nicolé told the driver. The ride was silent the whole way there with the exception of smooth jazz playing softly from the radio. When we arrived to say the place was packed would be an understatement. Mall going up on a Friday huh?
“We can split up I’ll stay with Olyviah and you two can do whatever it is guys do at the mall.”
“Dang I see ha it is.” August fake hurt.
“Nah forget them man you know how women get when it comes to shopping. We can stare at all the fine foreign girls with big booties.” Jay said joking but neither Nicolé nor Olyviah saw anything funny.
“Don’t get in trouble staring at somebody else girl.” He kissed his teeth. God gave me eyes to look so imma look.” After the immense stare down between the two we parted ways heading in opposite directions of the mall.
I was going through the list I created on my phone so I would remember everything I came here to get. The first store we went into was Express. It’s a love hate relationship I have with shopping because I have a hard time finding clothes that fit my tiny frame.
Searching through the garments on the round rack I found a cute black fringe blouse in an extra small. Then I went over to the bustier tops that you will see a lot of if you were to go through the clothes in my closet.
Once I had a good variety in my hand I took the articles of clothing to the fitting room to try them on. Six pairs of pants and seven tops later I decided on just four and went to the check out line. By the time I made it to the front Nicolé was done with two big bags in her hand.
“Hi did you find everything okay?” The girl at the register asked ringing up my items.
“Did anybody help assist you?”
“Umm. Her name was… uh… I’m sorry I forgot it.”
“No that’s fine.” She said neatly folding the clothes and put them in a bag. “Your total is $108.47.” While I was dinging in my purse for my wallet I felt the clerk staring at me the whole time almost as if she was in a trans.
I opened my wallet pulling out a crisp hundred and ten dollar bill. She gave me back my change but it was odd her whole demeanor altered from the time I first stepped to the register compared to now.
“Thank you for shopping at Express.” I grabbed my bag off the counter so they next person could step up in line.
“You didn’t get nothing girl.” Nicolé said teasing.
“It looks like you bought the whole store.” I shot back causing us both to laugh.
“Well what can I say I’m kind of a shopaholic a girl can never how too many clothes.” By the time Nicolé and I finished we didn’t have enough hands to carry the ton of bags we collected going into store after store. I sent the boys a quick text telling them to meet us in front of the AMC across the street.
They helped us carry our bags to the truck then we went inside the movie theater. It was neat how they had a bowling alley and Laser Tag on the second floor. We stood near the kiosk to decide on what movie to see.
“How about Beyond the Lights?”
“Nah man ion wanna see that ain’t that a chic flick?”
“Oooh I want to see it too.” Nicolé was agreeing with me while August shook his head.
“I guess we lost dis one but watch we open a can uh whoop ass on em’ later.” He said I was giggling at his serious tone.
“We’ll see.” I challenged while grabbing my ticket from his hand. We had 20 minutes before the movie start you know how there’s all the previews and stuff so that gave me enough time to use the restroom and get some snacks from the concession stand.
Of course you know who had to tag along. I wasn’t complaining he helped me carry the popcorn while I had drinks in my hand and boxes of candy. I sat next to August while Nicolé was sitting by Jay. It wasn’t even a good portion into the movie when I heard light snores August was definitely knocked out. The people in the theater started clapping because the movie had ended August jumped up out of his sleep.
“Man you were gone like the wind missed the whole movie it wasn’t bad.” Jay told him.
“I warned ya bout late movies a nigxa fall asleep easily mayne. On the bright side I’m well rested for dis match in laser tag though.” We took our coats and stuff to the lockers because we couldn’t take them inside for safety reasons.
“Ya’ll the green team while me and Olyviah are team yellow.” Everybody strapped on a vest holding their laser gun to the their side. The man explained the rules before he let us go inside separate doors. It was dark but neon lights reflected off of objects in the room.
Nicolé and I guarded each other back while I was the set of eyes in front and she looked out so no one will creep up on us.
“I don’t hear anything.” I whispered lowly before Nicolé could respond I heard her yelling run. I didn’t know where I running but I did as fast as my feet could carry me. She shot Jay he lost two of his lives.
Damn she got good aim I thought to myself. I wasn’t paying attention August came from behind the wall and we both started shooting. I got up to run but he was hot on my tail I shot back at him while looking forward. His hand grabbed onto my vest we both went tumbling to the ground.
“No I think it’s my ankle.”
“Lemme see.” I shook my head no. “Don’t be stubborn lemme see.”
“Fine I grumbled.” He pulled out his iPhone turning on the flashlight.
“I can’t eem’ tell if its sprung or not.”
“Because there’s nothing wrong with it.”
“Wha-.” Before he could finish his sentence I shot him in his target he lost a life. Not giving August enough time to register what happened I wiggled out his grip. But he pulled me back down now instead of playing laser tag we both were wrestling on the floor.
“Stoppp August let me go.” I said between giggles he was tickling me.
“Ya tricked me I can’t eem’ believe your sneaky self.” By now his tall slender frame was hovering over my petite one.
“August can you please let me go?”
“Nope.” He put emphasis on the p. “Give me a good reason why ya fooled a nigxa first.”
“What was that?” His face got closer to mine our eyes locked.
