i do think ai for writing code like ren'py is kinda different from art or writing, maybe? art it's all trained on other art, learning particular artists styles or whatever.

for code I think they have it write a million pieces of code and the ones that work get reinforced. so it's closer to a chess program that learns by playing itself. less plagiarism, maybe? And also maybe less energy to make text than entire images or videos (I don't really know, though)

AI being a plargism machine sucks, but that is far from the only reason it sucks.

Hey so I found out today that the creator of Ren'py has been using AI for the past 5 years to code things for the engine. (Copilot, Gemini, and Claude, specifically).

I hate this. A lot.

I'm not sure if there's a feasible alternative for me to turn to for VN development but I'm going to try to work something out. I don't want to touch anything with AI usage and the fact that it's just now come out that AI has been used to work on the engine just...sucks. Really bad.

I'm going to look into some alternatives, and hopefully there's a decent engine to switch to.

Returning for a 4th edition!

The Neo-Twiny Jam is an interactive fiction game jam with one primary rule:

Don't write more than 500 words.

Any type of Interactive Fiction is welcome, from any kind of IF system/format, regardless of genre/theme.

Other rules:

Unlike the original Twiny Jam, you can use any program/medium, as long as the piece can be considered Interactive Fiction (i.e. the game is interactive, and its focus is on the text).

The Jam is open to any language, as long as the word count is respected.

Sounds, graphics and code are not included in the word count.

Entries can have NSFW content, as long as you indicate it in your submission.

You must credit any asset used.

No AI/LLM generated content, incl. game cover/title card.

No Hate/Spam submissions.

The Neo Twiny Jam will run from June 1st 2026 (3:00 PM PDT) to June 30th 2026 (11:59 PM PDT).

The inspiration for this jam comes from Porpentine's Twiny jam, which ran in 2015. During the original three-week jam, creators were asked to submit a Twine game with no more than 300 words.

As in previous years, we will be matching the number of entries into a donation to an LGBTQ+ charity. This year's chosen organisations include Point of Pride, Campaign for Southern Equality, and Transgender Law Center. Please contact us if you would like to donate as well.
