Trust In Me The Same Way (with your time, with your blood) || Bucky & Steve
facethepastâ:
âThatâsâŚ. Iâm glad. Thatâs good to hear.â
Bucky works his jaw, biting at the inside of his cheek before finallyâ
âThe only way I can unlock thisââ He gives a downwards nod towards his slinged left arm ââis with the fingerprints of someone with high level security clearance from Hart.â
He hates that heâs asking Steve thisâ hates that he knows Steve is the only person who will actually do this for him. Still, he finds himself justifying his request as if doing so will soften his own guilt.
âIâd do it myself, butâŚ.â Bucky looks to Steve with a thin, wry smile. âStark and I arenât exactly pals. Iâd take a gamble at breaking into Avengers Tower, but that brings me back to this whole âtrying not to get arrestedâ thing Iâve been working on lately.â
Steveâs eyes alight on Buckyâs arm --Â
Buckyâs locked, handicapped, unusable arm --
and his jaw tightens. He swears he hears his bones creak, his back teeth whine as his body tightens up in rage. At those whoâd left his best friend (partly) crippled but mostly at himself for letting him stay that way for this long.
â Buck... dammit, Buck, why have you waited this long to--Â
-- youâve been without the use of your arm for this long? Iâm sorry, if Iâd thought about it sooner, I-- â
Steve practically huffs, his exasperation at himself and the world at large cutting off his words. He takes a moment to settle himself, to reorient his thoughts towards being helpful and not... well, mildly vengeful.
And he thinks he knows how.
â No need to break into the Tower, â he sighs with a gentle laugh, â I think I can help you without you having to resort to breaking and entering. Itâs Tonyâs print youâre after, right? Thatâs why you asked how weâre doing? â

Trust In Me The Same Way (with your time, with your blood) || Bucky & Steve
facethepastâ:
Bucky wants to tell Steve that it isnât his responsibility to keep him from getting arrested (because itâs notâ Buckyâs choices are his own and in no way, shape, or form Steveâs burden to bear), but he knows from experience that arguing it is useless. Steveâll take on the wrongs done to others as if they were done by his hand. Thatâs just his nature.
âI need a favor.â Itâs easier to do this, fall into stepâ like any of the dozens of missions theyâd run together during the war. Less easy to keep his guilt at bay. Bucky cracks the knuckles of his right hand with his thumb before he asksâ âHowâre things with you and Stark?â
         A favor.
Steve turns to face Bucky directly, instantly at attention.
            â Of course. Anything. â
Heâs not expecting the question; his eyebrows climb his forehead in surprise before he can school his expression. Not that he needs to -- heâs never had any inclination to hide anything from Bucky.
â Theyâre... okay. I think. ...Weâre good now. It took some time and some talking things over, but... â
                   ...why? â
reallylikesbeerâ:
âAw, hell nah; it ainât comfortable. Kids ask âbout it all the time like itâs somethinâ cool.â
Logan canât hide the tension in his ropy forearms as he thinks about the pain involved whenever his claws come out. Snikt. Yeah. At least Laura doesnât have enough of a filter not to tell the kids it feels like three machetes living inside you. (Poor kid.)
âBut hey, whatâre ya gonna do âbout it? It ainât like I can go back to the store anâ tell âem I want the adamantium removed.â
â I guess to them it would be. It looks cool until you understand what exactly happens to make them extend like that. â
Steve is curious but doesnât push. He knows people have their demons, especially people that have been around as long as he and Logan have, and he knows how heâd feel if someone were to press him about something he was so obviously uncomfortable about. People often do, and Steve hates it.
â Mm. Permanent body modification. Sounds a bit familiar. â He turns to look at the man beside him. â Voluntary? â

âEh, I manage,â she shrugged, surveying the bodies on the ground. The men all seemed to take the hint to stay down. Jessica turned to the man and tried to place the face- it was pleasant, almost goody-goody. Was he an Avenger or something? He didnât seem like one of the Hellâs Kitchen locals.
âThereâs usually a little more whiskey involved. Thatâs my favorite,â Jessica admitted.  âOne of these guys was a client. I caught his wife cheating on him and he blamed me. Said heâd bring his friend back, and⌠well, birds of an idiot feather flock together.â
Wait⌠this guy usually wore a mask, didnât he? She was starting to piece it togetherâŚ
âDo I know you? Should I know you? You exudeâŚ. do-gooder optimism. Superhero?â
â Client? â Steve lets the pieces float around in his brain for a few seconds before he makes the connection. â P.I.? â He frowns then, considering the rest of what sheâd said. â ...if he was your client, then wasnât he expecting you to find something? So you did what he paid you for, but he got--. â He stops and shakes his head, chest heaving with a sigh of confusion and disbelief. â People confuse me now more than they ever did. â
â Weâve never met, no, â he begins until he realizes she isnât asking if they know each other personally. â Ah. I, uh. Probably? Nameâs Steve Rogers. Nice to meet you. Or. Fight beside you, I guess. â
wingsonwilsonâ:
What a little shit. It was truly the best kept secret in America, that Steve Rogers was such an unrepentant little shit. âDo they make you sing the song? You better not be singing the song without me present, Star Spangled Man, you know I have dibs.âÂ
Sam paused, watching Steve carefully for a moment. âWhatâs it like? Talking about that stuff, I mean. Must feel like a lifetime ago now.â
Sam laughed a little, then abruptly realized that Steve was serious. While Sam knew how deadly Captain America could be in combat, he had always thought of Steve Rogers as something of a gentle giant. âOh, come on,â he plied, in a soft, teasing voice, âI think you have better control of your motor skills than you give yourself credit for. And if youâre really concerned about it, I know a guy that works down at the animal shelter on 23rd. You can practice on little furry things. If I see you hulking out, Iâll tackle you. NFL style.âÂ
â I promise you, nobody wants to hear me sing the song, â Steve laughs, big and bright and genuine. â As far as USO stuff goes, most of them ask about the ladies I toured with and... well. â His head dips a bit self-consciously, his cheeks pinking. â People have some pretty interesting ideas about what went on behind the scenes of those shows and during down time... â
â Oh yeah? â Steve perks up immediately, an excited grin taking over his face slowly. â I might do that anyway. Been thinking of maybe getting a dog or a cat.Â
--Wha--? Hulking ou--? Sam. â His laugh surprises him, but it feels good. He shakes his head at his friend. â Iâd like to see you try to tackle me, Wilson. Youâd better do it with the wings on. â
notwhateveryoneseesâ:
âWeâre fine.âÂ
Wandaâs answer comes a little bit too quickly, obviously not entirely honest.Â
âItâs â itâs just some family issues, Steve. Nothing important. Nothing you could do much about.âÂ
After all, it wasnât like he could explain her entire family history to her.Â
âI feel like Iâm just waiting for something to happen. Itâs not a good way to think, but I do not know if Iâve ever experienced this much quiet in my life.â
He doesnât think theyâre actually fine, but he feels like heâs already overstepped. So he nods and quirks his lips in what he hopes is a comforting smile.
â Well, if that changes, let me know. Iâm always here. â
Steve understands her unease about the quiet. He feels it too. But looking a gift horse in the mouth seems like a bad way to go.
â My lifeâs never been all that quiet either, not in a very long time, so I get it. Then I feel bad because I feel like Iâm almost asking for trouble, you know? â
reallylikesbeerâ:
âEnjoy that title while ya got it, kid. Ainât gonna last long.â Logan examines his knuckles, brushing a stray scab from in between his index and middle fingers. At his mental command, the foot-long claw that resides underneath the skin there shoots out, and Logan models it in the sun, watching for the exit wound to stitch itself back up with his healing factor. It does, and Logan sheathes his claw.
He turns back to Steve, a nonchalant look on his face. âPretty good achievements youâve got goinâ there. So what brings ya from the kidsâ table all the way over here to the old menâs saloon ? Did ya wish on oneâa those Zoltron things?â
â Iâm savoring every second of this for that exact reason, â Steve laughs good-naturedly. Then Logan... unsheathes -- the only term he can really think of to apply to the act -- a long, metal blade from between his fingers. He watches as rays of sun gleam off its surface, tiny bits of blood pooling around the base where it splits his skin. Steve raises an eyebrow in question at the man beside him.
Much more has changed since the 1940â˛s than Steve thought. So much more.
â I imagine that canât be comfortable, â he deadpans.

âPietro always goes protective brother on everyone. Itâs ridiculous is what it is.â Wanda laughed, though her expression didnât quite match the sound. âWe had a bit of aâŚtense discussion recently. It might have made that a bit worse. Other than that thoughâŚfine. Things have been quiet. Which is nice, but also a bit unnervingâŚâ
Steve laughs even harder. â No, it was sweet. Really. But... â He sobers quickly, noticing the expression on Wandaâs face. He knows her well enough to know that not all is well.
â Is... are you guys okay? Anything I can do to help? â
The questionâs a little personal, he realizes, so he backs off. Heâd hate for Wanda to feel like heâs digging into her personal life. If she wants him to know, sheâll tell him.
â --Yeah, the quietâs been weird for me too. Iâm not sure what to do with myself when Iâm not fighting something. â
avengerwitharrows¡:
âI meant stronger as a compliment, but fair enough. I mean, if I made a messâŚâ He ponders, wondering what he would have done in the same situation. ââŚitâd depend on whether or not it was my fault, I guess. Accountability isnât a bad thing, but at the same time I can easily see myself telling the government where to stick it.â
Who the hell is he to tell Steve how to view himself, how to feel? He had already called him out, and even if it wasnât malicious? To come back into the fold after the crap hit the fan, and pretend like he knew best? That wasnât the case, and that wasnât him.
âIâm not saying youâre not a tool.â Clint smirked, giving a shrug. ââŚbut youâre more than that. More than an asset.â He had told Natasha the same thing, way back when. He never would have expected himself having to give Steve the reminder.
âYou passed along the shield, but thatâs not what made you a hero. Wasnât the serum, either.â It was his spirit. Would be corny to say it aloud, but maybe he needed to hear it. ââŚthose were the assets, they helped you do what you would have done by nature anyway. Just, they helped you do it without dying, from what Iâve heard. Nobody can question your service or commitment to making things better. You could have easily decided youâre done, that youâve done your fair share. Call it quits because itâs just easier, because youâve earned it⌠Iâll be honest, that might be what I would do, were I in your shoes. Thatâs not what youâre doing, though. Thatâs not who you are. Whatever you call yourself, whatever Tony, or anyone calls you⌠you are a hero. I donât just respect what youâve done and what youâve been through. I respect you man, as a person. For what itâs worth, Iâd trust you with my life.â
Well that got⌠mushy.
ââŚand yeah, I think you answered it. More or less.â
Heâs not expecting Clintâs answer.
It jars him a little to hear it, not because itâs Clint but because itâs... well, kinder than anything he feels he deserves to hear right now. But itâs honest too; he knows that for sure, considering the source. He takes a moment to breathe through yet another near-stifling knot of emotions -- a very familiar and very, very uncomfortable feeling -- before he mumbles out a response.
â ...Thank you, Clint. I-. ...Thank you. â
The silence between them lingers for a moment before Steve clears his throat and pushes forward.
â Have you spoken to him? Tony? Or... anyone, I guess. God, â he laughs bitterly, running a hand over his head. â Iâm sorry, Clint, weâve been so focused on me and my issues...Â
What have you been doing? How have you been doing? â
wingsonwilson:
Sam draws his hand back, the movement unhurried and gentle, and contemplates the benefits of getting Steve a dog. Sam thinks he needs someone who can both take care of him and be cared for in kind. Short of setting Steve up with one of his many overly eager cousins, there doesnât seem to be another option. Maybe heâd pick out a golden retriever - as big and dumb and pretty as Steve himself. âThatâs wild, man. You could tell them anything. You could tell them Colonel Phillips dyed his hair green for a week and theyâd kind of have to believe you. What kinds of things are they asking about? Just the war or, like, soc stuff too?â
The suggestion of art classes sounds fantastic and Sam is immediately enthused about the prospect, but tactfully keeps his interest contained to a raised eyebrow. Sometimes, Sam thinks Steve is best approached like a scared, anxious little bunny - with wary movements and extreme caution. âThat sounds nice. Are you thinking of going in at the college level or aiming a little younger?â
â Câmon, Sam. Would I do that? Really? â Steve knows his expression is innocent enough, just like he knows Sam will see right through it anyway. He shrugs a shoulder, smiling. â About the war, yeah, but... stuff about the USO show... and Brooklyn too. What things were like back then. That kinda thing. They think itâs hilarious that Iâm older than their grandparents. âÂ
â College, â he blurts, then reconsiders. â Well. I think. I dunno. â Heâd never considered teaching kids, especially young ones. Heâs not sure how he feels around them; he likes them well enough, but. All these years later and heâs still not always sure heâs got full control over his giant body. Heâd hate to go in for a hug and crush someone.
â Kids are great, but theyâre... small. And breakable. Iâm used to not having to check my strength with the people Iâm around. â
akaherosandwich:
Thankfully, this guy seemed to be able to hold his own, so Jessica didnât have to worry about covering his ass. A fourth and final assailant had her focused while the stranger worked over another two thugs. She swung at the manâs stomach, shoving his shoulders when he hunched over in shock at her punch.
Her allyâs shout caused her to turn her head, just in time to see one of the thugs approaching her with an extended blade.  âOh, youâve gotta be kidding me,â she muttered, dodging as the man took a stab and barely missed.
Jessica quickly roundhoused the manâs hand and he gripped his wrist as the blade clattered to the ground. The woman dove in to punch the man in the jaw, sending him toppling. She turned to her battle partner.
âThanks for the warning.â
â No problem. â Steve eyes the woman, then the carnage laid out around her. â I feel like you wouldâve been just fine without it though. â
The space around them is suddenly silent. Loudly so in comparison to the ruckus theyâd been immersed in mere moments before. The men are down, none of them so much as groaning though Steve can still hear them all breathing. So heâs left to turn to his... ally? Can he call her that?
â Do your nights normally go like this? You donât seem rattled at all. â
zoomzoomzip:
     âI thinkâŚâÂ
An uncharacteristic pause, brief - but enough time to wrestle with the need to protect Wanda, and the thought that maybe a friend might not been an unwanted presence for her.Â
          â - that Wanda will like that.âÂ
âYes, like everyone.  Some have more than others, to find.âÂ
Steveâs grin widens. He knows the admission mustâve cost Pietro something, but it had been made for his sisterâs sake. Heâs never known that particular protective urge, the one a brother feels for his sister, so to be in the presence of it is bittersweet.
        â Mm. â
He doesnât have much else to say in the face of that fact. Guilt burns hot and stinging in his blood, shame a greasy accompaniment. As if he has any right to claim to be picking up pieces when itâs his fault that so many are broken and scattered in the first place...

âI â Itâs fine, Steve. Donât worry. I am glad to see you now though.â
â Itâs not. â He doesnât argue more than that though, just shakes his head at himself as he sits down next to her.
â How have you been? I saw Pietro a little while ago. I asked about you, and he got all protective brother on me. It was sweet. â
Use your head, but donât be afraid to believe in things either.
