My battered dirty feet carry me to a fork in the path,

They refuse to carry on

Without their momentum my knees give way throwing me into the red clay

I lie there gazing down the path that would carry me to the same destination

It’s filled with briars and dirty needles

The only light that exists is that of the embers of every bridge I’ve encountered

The other path is lush and full of life.

I know that I should want that path…

But I’m afraid of the light and warmth of the sun

I drag myself to the only road I’ve ever known by my hands
