“What?” Cassie put her hands up defensively even though that wouldn’t do much against an arrow and gawped at the person in front of her. Maybe her secret late night walk hadn’t been such a good idea, but she had thought that being on a roof would mean not getting bothered. She’d forgotten heroes had a propensity for rooftop patrols. Kate had come literally out of nowhere and startled her, and now here she was with bow drawn and an arrow drawn.

“Kate no, it really is me! I promise! You know I would never, never do anything to you!”

“ Do you expect me to believe you? ”

Kate tightens her grip on her bow, ignoring the uneasiness in her stomach hinting at a reappearance of her last meal. The last thing she expected to see on her patrol was a ghost. Cassie Lang was dead, long gone and she’d watched her die, the memory was burned into her brain as furiously as she was gritting her teeth.

             “ Don’t worry soldier — you’re not                     getting rid of me this easy. ”Kate has never been more unsure of anything that had come out of her mouth in her ENTIRE life.  The bullet that had  found it’s way into her gut  (  damn that cut-out panel ) felt a lot more dangerous than the pain she was used to.  It was a constant warwith her eyelids to keep herself  AWAKE   and her eyes on him, focused on something other than thePAIN and the FEAR.                     “ C’mon, people survive worse than                                 this everyday, right? ”

Battered and bruised  ( a totally new experience - not ) an out of breath Kate sheaths what’s left of her arrows once the police ( and ambulance ) leave her alone. The footsteps startle her, enough for her to prepare an arrow ready to aim at the owner. A head of blonde curls and an innocent face comes into view and she drops her bow.

                    “ You’re sick. ”

SKRULL, mutant whatever this thing was, it brought stinging tears to her eyes as it took to form of a long gone friend.  In a world where there were  numerous people and ways to mess with her head, it would take a lot of convincing for Kate to believe that the girl in front of her was Cassie Lang.
