“if that is what you wish, then make it so,” said brenierre as if it was that simple. she was a dwarf of a simple disposition: do what you want. if she had limitations than she chose to ignore her, what she did not recognize could not effect her until it was too late. “if there is a problem and you know what steps must be taken to solve it, then take those steps. often i find that most of the time we are only barred by illusions. try and you shall succeed sooner or later.”
“you make it sound so easy.” the hobbit smiled as she listened to the other. there had been so many times during this trip she had assumed she couldn’t take. the wargs. wulf’s trial. her kidnapping. but she had gone through it all and continued. she hoped this was just another thing like that. “but, maybe it can be that easy. who knows...” pushing through any pain that might bubble to the surface, rosa pushed herself upright. “i think my mind is just filled with worry for my friends who were separated.”

brenierre sat down across from the small halfling, and unwrapped the clean cloth that she had tied around her wrist. she kept layered collections of every unmarred piece of clothing or jewelry she could find and adorned her person with them. “if you need new bandages find me, i ave plenty to spare,” she resisted the urge to add the rejoinder ‘those who intended to use them on perished before i got the chance.’ instead she opted for, “and if you friends are as i think they are, they will not think of you as a burden. it is an honor to carry a loved one to safety.”
“i should be good for a little bit, but if i need more i will ask. thank you.” bren’s words were meant to comfort her and in some way they did. rosa knew her friends would happily help her. they had so many times before. yet still in her gut, there was that familiar pang of guilt that only seemed to be growing stronger and stronger. there was time to prove herself still. “i do not wish to be carried. i wish to help them, but i know you are right. they are good people, they will not mind.”
“ do not fret little one, in time your wounds will heal. ”
after being propped up against one of the walls by her team, rosa hadn't moved much. every slight twitch she made was still sending pain through her shoulder. she kept as quiet as she could, besides the occasional wince from the pain. the team had enough to worry about, but it seemed at least they could have an easier time with the new person they ran into. rosa did her best to give her a smile, "thank you...i just don't want to slow anyone down.”
Kieran smiled faintly and shrugged, leaning against Drouin a bit as he walked.
“Doing all right,” he paused, went silent for a handful of seconds. But this was Rosa, and if he couldn’t talk to her, then who could he talk to?
“Feels like I’m suffocating a bit,” he admitted finally. “Don’t you think?”
As if hearing him, the fog swirled closer, pushed by some unfelt breeze. It sent a shiver up Kieran’s spine. So much of Kieran’s life revolved around his senses—around sight and sound and touch and hearing and, yes, sometimes even taste—and this fog seemed to be draining that all away from him.
for a moment rosa was expecting him to stop after he first spoke. even when they were younger kieran had always been a man of few words. rosa could talk circles around him all day and he hardly ever seemed to mind. people told her that she spoke enough for the two of them.
she was just thankful that he kept talking with her, there was no point in keeping all of that in. "i am feeling similarly. but i keep trying to focus on little things ahead of me that i can see. it isn't much but at least it is keeping me from just staring into the mist."
"i am thankful you're down here on the ground with me. up on your horses i can't really see all of you. rather spooky actually. looks like a bunch of headless people riding horses."
Luc’s smile faded into a small frown. “Um. No? I don’t think so. I mean, not while I was watching anyway. But I guess you could have before?”
He fell in step next to the hobbit, keeping up with her easily enough and adjusting his stride to match. He didn’t appear to be going somewhere else any time soon. The hobbit seemed nice enough; if he got on her good side, maybe she’d vouch for him to the rest of the party.
“So where are we headed?” he asked, bringing back some of that energetic tone from before. “I mean, if we ever get out of this fog,” he added with a laugh.
"no...i don't think i did. at least i think i might have remembered doing it. or at least my head would be hurting." a hallucination couldn't be touched, right? and she had poked his leg, which meant he had to be real. so maybe he was just like them, lost within the fog searching for a way out. it couldn't be right for her to just turn him away then. if she was alone out in these woods she would want someone to stop and talk with her.
standing up from the ground, she dusted off the dirt from her skirt before collecting the rope she was using as a way to get back to camp. "right now i'm headed...somewhere in these woods. i'm looking for some food to bring back to camp." she was inclined to stop the conversation there, like she had been told dozens of times. strangers didn't need to know everything. but the words tumbled out of her. "would you like to join me?"

“ that is a wonderful idea, miss rosa. ” elas was surprised that the thought hadn’t occurred to him, but he was pleased that rosa had the good sense for it. he dropped the pieces of wood that he managed to find at the edges of their camp, not going too far, and it was obvious that they needed much more. with a smile, he stepped over to the hobbit. “ let me help you with that, it looks quite heavy. ” he said, reaching for the rope. “ why don’t you lead the way ? ”
"it is?" the hobbit said, shocked that he agreed with her. quickly, she recovered giving a proud smile. "i mean, of course it is!" rosa was happy to hand over the heavy rope to elas. there was always a determination from rosa that she could do just about anything the rest of the group could, despite her size. still, she was not above taking help when she needed it and with elas carrying it they could cover more ground. "alright let's go....." rosa looked around, turning in a circle before pointing in a direction. "that way!" she said bounding off for the woods, but stopped to wait for elas. "sorry, forgot you had the rope to carry."
“is it not the nature of friends to simply give each other a gift, from time to time? conversation, affection, perhaps a hug in the right moment or a small trinket that reminded them of the other? i’d dare say your companionship has been more than enough to warrant my desire to give you a gift, though it does come with a slightly more practical reasoning as well.” she couldn’t help but smile as she gave the smaller woman’s hand a gentle squeeze, keeping her close while carefully navigating through the crowd. “one of the larger shops - you’ll typically hear it long before you see it.”
"i guess you are correct, but i cannot say i am used to receiving trinkets from friends. nor do i think i have given many out to mine." rosa said, a small look of horror on her face realizing she might have been slacking on that area of friendship "well to be honest, i have not had many until recently." she said, though it was no said with any sadness. not much in her past brought feelings of sadness to her, despite what some might think of as serious struggles she had gone through. she simply kept the positives within her mind and that was enough to push away any sadness. rosa followed in close step with her friend, and as they neared more shops the noise got louder and louder. "we are close i am guessing?" still unsure of what the gift could possibly be.
the winding wood twisted and turned beneath the soles of his feet, mossy ground soft as he stepped lightly. body moving through towering oak with ease, it was as if he was one of many among them ; branches brushing the curve of his shoulders as he went, whispers of lost, lost, lost and found, found, found pressing ever-in on his mind. the voices grow louder as he nears, he knows, and they’re nearly disorienting by the time he stumbles across the path of someone rather ––– small.
❛ eh ––– ❜ he blinks, green eyes of the wood staring down at her rather frightfully diminutive frame, before something clicks in his misty mind and he’s bending slightly, lowering himself. ❛ oh, a hobbit ! ❜
out of the brambling mass of trees and brush came a tall figure. rosa froze in her place as she watched the man for a moment. from the look on his face, it seemed liked it took him a few moments to recognize her as well. maybe much like her, he assumed odd things appearing from the woods was just a hallucination. but as the two stood face to face it was clear neither of them was.
almost like she could see the thought appear within his eyes, he bent down slightly towards her. the gesture something she always appreciated just for the simple fact of not having to strain her neck to always look up at people. with his height he could easily blend in with the trees that surrounded them. "an elf, if i am correct?" she smiled, staring up at him. "are you alone out here in the woods?" she said, looking around to see if she could spot any companions. "am i imagining this?" she asked, though unsure if the answer would help or not.
the fire flickered and dimmed, the smog thick, oppressive as it weighed down on the flames of the campfire. even the wood of the stump he was sat upon felt almost damp, as he broke bread ; opting for the smallest roll they had left, not wishing to take any more than what was necessary from his companions, knowing the journey ahead was to be long, arduous. ❛ apologize ? ❜ the word hung on the air, curious as his friend caught his attention. ❛ what on earth have you to apologize for, rosa ? ❜
apologizing like this was no uncommon occurrence for the young hobbit. working for a family as a scullery maid she often apologized for delays as she caught herself daydreaming most of the day. or back in fable, she'd wander where she was not supposed to go. and now here she found herself compelled to apologize to theo, though fearful he might be upset with her. "back in the village when we were escaping. i threw a pebble, a VERY small pebble, at the mayor. it sort of hit him in the head." she told him, even now trying not to smile thinking back to man's reaction. "i think maybe that's why he charged at me. i probably shouldn't have done it even though he did deserve it."
she had clearly learned her lesson. he did not think that she would speak out of term again. he felt no remorse for his threat nor any of the actions he’d taken to get her here, “you’ve got to learn, lil miss, that truth is what the people agree on. and if i can get my friends to vouch for me that’s all that matters.” he flashed a sly smile at her, “this is the price you pay for kindness in this world.”
in all her life rosa had never met a man such as him before. sure she had met those who’d be willing to bend or break the rules. but not a man who seemed to almost take such joy in it. and little remorse for fear. “but you still know it is wrong. and your conscience knows it is still wrong.” even his smile seemed wrong. “no.” she said. “this is not the price for kindness. it’s you who is warping it, like the truth.”

“i am not going to untie you, you sneaky little brat! how stupid do you think i am?” he was about to lash out at her, strike her to silence her for her impudence but instead he chose to raise a threatening hand instead. if she dared ask again he would no hesitate. “that’s not how i remember it. from what the town and i have agreed on your party came into our town, took our resources, and killed our leader. have you ever heard of the punishment death by stoning?”
rosa could hear the anger in his voice turn. the moment his hand raised, she flinched away in complete fear. any illusion she thought she built up was gone. thankfully he didn’t strike her, but still her heart raced. “t-that is not true. you can’t just make up things like that!
the thought alone of stoning was scary enough to think of. and she knew these people would do it “we were kind to the people in the town, despite what was happening to our friend.” she hesitated for a moment. “i was kind to you...”
“that’s not how this works,” he sneered, “i need my money first and then you can go. your friends better actually care for you or else you’re coming back to town with us. and the town isn’t so fond of you anymore. they might do you to what you did to our mayor.”
“my friends care for me very much, which is why i am trying to help you. if you think they will not find me then you are sorely mistaken. they will be madder if they find me here tied up like this than if you untied me and we can come to an agreement.” she held up her bound hands to him in hopes that he would free her. gods, she hoped she found convincing. but still there was fear coursing through her as he mentioned that town again. “i threw a harmless small pebble at him. it was not anything he didn't deserve after he tried to have my friend killed.”
rosa inched backward away from the man as best as she could with her hand tied tightly in front of her. “please...” she said softly this time, trying to keep any shake out of her voice. “you can just let me go. we can still give you whatever it is you want.”
a twig snapped. the sound itself not too alarming but against the almost eerie silence the fog had left over them the past few days, the sound was even bigger. green eyes scanned the forest for whatever might have made the noise. amongst the mixture of green and browns of the trees, rosa caught sight of something. red. the color stood out against the area around it enough for her to take a second look at it. but it wasn't just red she saw, it was blue as well, and grey. they just looked like colors mixed in amongst the foliage. but they moved. she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her once again. as her eyes focused on them more she noticed they weren't just colors. they were....people. people crouched amongst the trees and bushes with scarves wrapped around their faces.
rosa knew she had to be seeing things. this had to be another vision. still her legs seemed frozen to the ground as they stood up in their spots. even if this was just some strange hallucination in her mind she should turn and run. but she felt frozen as they moved closer and closer within the fog
"don't run."
there was a gruffness in the tone in the man's voice. it was a warning. what would happen if she did? they took another step closer.
she wasn't going to wait around to see what these hallucinations were going to do next. rosa took a step back away from the fog and away from the hallucinations. without warning the man bolted for her.
this was fake. this was all in her head. but the sight of the man rushing at her was frightening enough for her to turn to run. the man's large stride was quick enough to catch up to her and wrap his large callused hand around her arm.
the tight grip on her arm sent a new wave of panic through the hobbit. this wasn't a hallucination. this was real. this man was real, which meant the other five men running up behind him was real as well.
a scream ripped through her throat at the realization.
her mind swarmed with panic. it was only seconds but it felt like it lasted minutes as rosa tried to fight off the man's grip.
she didn't know what to do. what was someone supposed to do when they were being dragged into a hazy abys by a group of men.
something in her mind told her to yell again. her friends were close by. they could get to her. they could help her.
someone needed to help her, that’s what she thought. her friends, her lifelines weren’t far away. she could almost see them all. they could see her. they could help. rosa screamed out again. she screamed the first name she could think of. her old friend. he could help her. "kieran!" she screamed, echoing across the silence again. "kieran, please! ki-"
her lifeline was cut off as the man pressed his hand over her mouth, silencing any other attempts to get help. they dragged her back. she could see the camp getting smaller and smaller until there was nothing but the fog. nothing but the fog and the men who had taken her.
the fight within her didn't stop. she would kick and scream the whole way to wherever they were taking her.
the men whispered amongst themselves but she couldn't make out what they were saying. she could see one of them pull their sword from the sheath. another scream muffled by the man's hand as she saw this.
they're going to kill me. that's all she could think over and over again as he got closer. she looked at him, pleading with her eyes not to hurt her. not like this. not here in the woods alone. please not now, she begged.
however, instead of swinging the sword at her, he drove the hilt down on her. it knocked her unconscious almost immediately. the screaming stopped. the fighting stopped as she went limp in the man's arms.
"let's get back to camp." the man said to the other as they made their way through the fog.
"alright look! i had a wonderful idea to keep us safe and not get us lost in the fog." the small hobbit lugged over a large length of rope that felt like it weighed more than her. "if we leave the rope trailing behind us as we go then we can find our way back. that way we can collect wood and other supplies! so, what do you think?" rosa said beaming with a proud smile.

a gift for @hcrince - because every rose should have some thorns
Faunalyn’s smile was gentle and kind when she finally made her way towards Rosa, which was not a terribly uncommon sight - the elf typically found it easy enough to smile in the company of their traveling party, and especially so around the light-hearted hobbit. She wanted to protect and nurture that spirit, but the recent fight with the wargs and the current situation they found themselves in made it obvious that everyone should have the means to protect themself, should the need arise.
“Would you care to accompany me on a trip to the shops, dear one? I’ve a gift I’d like to give you, but I think it’d be best if you had some say in the matter.”
in a sunny spot outside of the small inn they were staying in, rosa had found a perfect spot to sit. reading over a small book she'd brought along with her. however, any attention she had on her reading was gone once she saw her friend approaching. "i would be more than happy to!" the small hobbit said shooting up from her spot on the grass. "but a gift for me? you know you don't have to get me anything. nor do i think i've done anything to deserve such a gift, but thank you!" she laughed, tucking away the small book in a pocket of her voluminous skirt. hurrying over to faunalyn's side, she reached out to take the hand of the much taller elf. while this town was still small, the market place was a bustling place and she didn't want to get separated from her friend. "do i get a hint about where we are going?" she asked
a frown formed on harlowe’s lips, forehead creasing a bit as he studied the way rosa pulled the needle through the fabric. he didn’t believe her. she’d been extremely jumpy, even when he tried to keep his voice low and warm, and she radiated worry. “it’s okay not to be fine.” he began, trying to be reassuring. “or, well, it’s alright if physically things are healed but you’re still reeling. that was unexpected.” he clarified, not wanting to press too hard but there was no reason to put on a show. if she wasn’t alright, he could try to help, but if she wouldn’t admit to it, there was little more he could offer than his company.
“you’re pretty good at that,” he added, gesturing to her needlework. “my fingers are too stubby for needlework, i get too frustrated and once i mess a stitch up, it’s hopeless. i can’t get it undone.” he added, hoping offering an alternative to answering him would make it easier for her.
when this quest first started, rosa worried that she might be the weak link amongst the group. she had such little skills in fighting to start and only a small amount of experience in travel such as this. she feared the team might start eyeing her as the weak one. the last thing she wanted to become was a nuisance for the team. maybe it was foolish to try to capture the attention of the warg that had been going after theo. sure, she kept it from getting close to him but now her arm throbbed every time she moved it. maybe there could have been a better way. she had no idea.
pushing down all those negative thoughts she tried to keep pressing forward with harlowe, keeping a calm exterior. but his words chipped away at it until the real fear shown across her face before she tried to bury it again. "i...." she didn't know exactly what to say. "i've never experienced anything like that before. i have never been so scared before and i felt like i couldn't even do anything." rosa spoke quickly before focusing right back on her needlework. "thank you." the small hobbit held up the cloth so he could get a better look at it. "just takes practice. i am sure you are not as terrible at it as you might think."
