I'm a professional dog trainer, working a lot with reactive and adolescent dogs. I also teach nosework.
Hazard (#hazard to society) is my rescue shar pei/cattle dog mix (really) who gives me immense grief and growth on a regular basis.
K'seil (#bucket full of starlight) is my Aussie who thinks all problems can be solved by going faster.
And Penny (#nepenthe) is our cat. She just learned how to sit in laps at the age of 8 years old we're very proud.
My tagging system is pretty consistent except apparently for my job, which has all kinds of tags. My wife also has access to this blog and sometimes posts pics.

worked with Hazard on the V-BN sit for exam. he's struggling more with the stay aspect (K'seil came predisposed to learn duration behaviors very easily, Hazard...did not) so we got as far as:
he sits in heel, stays while I walk 6 feet away, turn, walk back around and return to heel
he sits in front, stays while I move to his side and run a hand from his head down to his hips
situation status: Hazard is going up to fancypants neurologist next weekend for a dynamic MRI to hopefully give us some answers. I, ofc, am being perfectly normal about this and not overthinking it in the slightest.
this is your reminder that if you live nearish me (seattle area) i am happy to do a meetup with or without dogs, although i am uhhh real bad about reaching out to schedule things

the number one lesson that toddler parenting is teaching me is the power of adjusting your attitude so you can get silly. if I am in a bad mood or at the end of my rope patience-wise my toddler senses this IMMEDIATELY and actively turns every single interaction into a protracted power struggle. but if i can take a second to gather myself and marshal juuust enough strength to do a goofy little bit or even just make a silly face he is sooo so delighted and can usually be easily persuaded to do whatever he was resisting two seconds earlier. tonight he was testing meeeeeeeeee oh my god WHY must everything be a battle and then I invented a game called BOOM where I swing him around and drop him on the nearest cushioned surface and this game was such a wild hit that we did our entire bedtime routine in five min just by trading bedtime tasks for one (1) boom. and then he was in such a silly happy mood it put me in a better mood and now I don’t feel as exhausted. idk it does take some effort to rally when you’re not feeling inclined to be silly but then it consistently saves soooo much time/energy in the rest of your interactions I think it’s worth it. plus it’s crazy how much goofing off with somebody for a few minutes resets your nervous system.
K'seil went to her new vet for real on Monday and it was so so good I'm thinking about switching Hazard to the new vet too
a) fear free vet and afaik whole practice? b) vet who knows me FIRST as a trainer she can send Difficult Cases to instead of as a client.
just a very very smooth experience, K'seil did try to inhale her pig ear but figured out how to chew it instead, I got to give her the shots which was fun, she did everything mostly voluntarily (I did do a treat scatter for the shots), she had a great time, I talked shop with the vet a little bit, we have a clonidine prescription...
really proud of her and really proud of me for remembering to advocate for her (said no she's at her limit instead of having the vet start the intros process).
new tasklist tho!
muzzle training (proper, not just the "jam it on and distract her" we've done so far)

Self-proclaimed “saviours” of dogs being hypocritical and not taking back a dog with a bite history (which is being bred for bite sports)??? How unsurprising.
Honestly so tired of these compulsion trainers’ false dichotomies of dogs with behaviour issues must be “saved” by punishment and aversive training or euthanised because force free trainers “give up”.
It’s just marketing at this point. And it’s justification for training methods that cause pain and fear and has no place in modern dog training.
But also damn. Not taking a dog back that you bred because of a “bite history” when you literally train and breed for bitework is crazy. And a spinal issue that is probably causing pain and likely contributed to the bite… So much yikes.
One of the most heartwarming things I’ve ever heard a dog trainer say “A pushy pet who makes small demands and communicates their needs to you is a safe pet. It means they trust you and aren’t afraid of your reaction if they misbehave and push your buttons a little”
beach videos will come eventually. beach behavior report: B overall. Hazard gets an A, K'seil a B+.
no breakdowns from anyone over dog behavior this year, which is great.
off leash on the beach: A+ for K'seil, B for Hazard. whistle worked for K'seil 100% of the time and 85% of the time for Hazard, but the whistle DID get enough of his attention for his name to work. nobody harassed anyone else. Hazard did today (our last day) fixate on a pair of off leash dogs in the distance, and that was one of the examples where he was nonresponsive to the whistle but did respond to his name.
watching him today I think he's not 100% sure the whistle = recall, but it does help break fixation. so if I whistle + voice call, that should improve odds.
with Maddie: A+ for Hazard, C for K'seil. Hazard doesn't care about Maddie and treats her like a bizarre ambulatory piece of furniture.
K'seil's relationship with Maddie has been hard, because K'seil can be a pokey puppy and Maddie is on-off on whether or not SHE wants to play, so usually interactions between them end in screeching. this year K'seil also started resource guarding certain things from Maddie--not so much pulling a face if Maddie got near HER while SHE had the possession, but charging at Maddie snarling if Maddie moved towards the possession while K'seil was in the vicinity.
no contact and every one ended with K'seil trying to reset to a neutral-positive. they were also most egregious when K'seil was noticeably overtired. I'm not 100% convinced this is An Actual Problem so much as exhausted bitch being bitchy, but I've noted to be more careful with her high value items next year.
(special note that these were two specific toys, not all toys, and kongs with food still in them, not empty-but-dirty kongs. she's very discriminating.)
with the rest of the family: Hazard A+, K'seil B-. on Wednesday (today is Friday), she decided my sister is Very Scary And Needs To Be Shrieked At. this was the 5th day in a row of Off Leash Fun Times and she was clearly exhausted, also she has known my sister since she was 5 months or younger. of everyone in the family my sister is the most classically ADHD and has the biggest, loudest body language and also has NO intuitive dog-sense.
this rental has a good view of the path to the beach, and all 3 dogs were a little huffy about watching people come up the path. Wednesday afternoon after watching my sister come in, K'seil jumped, charged, and screamed at her.
no contact was made, just a lot of stressy herdy behavior--trying to poke my sister, trying to control her movement by bluff-charging and shrieking in her direction. very obnoxious and definitely worrying to all involved, but also fear-based and not interested in harming.
the last 48 hours have been a lot of management, redirection, and looking for where K'seil's specific problems are. she is fine with my sister sitting, even talking and gesturing. she is fine if my sister is standing still (this rarely happens). she is NOT fine if my sister is walking past her. she struggles a lot with my sister appearing at the stairs and will charge up the stairs to see if she's coming down. she has no problems with my sister out of the house.
I'm also putting this under "leave it alone and see what changes". it's also definitely mediated by exhaustion and overall stress levels, and the size and frequency of her feelings dropped dramatically Wed-Thur-Fri.
no issues with Hazard, which was great, and she had no problems with anyone else in the family. Hazard even curled up one night SQUISHING himself between my sister and her wife so that was adorable.
in public: Hazard A-, K'seil B+. we went out to eat last night, today we took them Into Town. tomorrow they're going to a dog-friendly museum so stay tuned.
Hazard did 99% very good, including taking treats from a stranger and ignoring other dogs, but a) LARGE man looming over him suddenly got a very soft low growl and b) at the tail end of outings, he took offense to a man entering a store we were already in and started letting everyone know. so we exited.
K'seil largely did good with people but jesus christ her loose leash walking needs work. oh my god. it's clearly a skill she HAS in there some where but as distractions go up, reinforcers go down, and my attention shifts--she's gone.
also they both need love on settling on mats.
this is rather harsh on them because I'm looking towards the next training project, they really were overall good dogs and I love them very much.
