Sketch from a while ago based on a Slovak folk ballad "Ringére". About Death coming for a young man who refuses to go with her because he wants to marry first. To which the Death replies, he can marry her; she is all dressed in white anyway. Not sure if I'm ever gonna finish this, but I've always wanted to draw something inspired by the song.

Most Gothic authors I love happen to be men, but imo women get horror in a way that's fundamentally different from horror conceived by male writers. I suspect it's about being better acquainted with a host of things, such as feelings of powerlessness, fear for their own safety and that of people they love, insecurity, body horror, being ignored, denied and forbidden, even being more in touch with their emotions.

And while some of my favourite horror was written by men and I don't mean to undermine the brilliance of those books, today I'm thinking about the women who made the genre so much more alive for me, exploiting anxiety, pain and terror in such beautiful haunting ways. I'd take any of them over Stephen King any day.
