omegahorn ep. 2 thoughts and perhaps a touch of conspiracy...
will this be a weekly thing? probably not, considering i have my irl job to contend with. that said, i have thoughts to jot down and this blog is the place to do it!
again, i may be jumping the gun because we are only two episodes in, but the confidence in the concept and execution of the series is honestly reassuring. one of the big problems i had with gavan infinity is that it felt hindered by its concept despite its expansiveness, probably because it was trying to appeal to the sentai fans. omegahorn has arguably as expansive of a concept, but the series seems like it has a clearer direction as to where it's going. as much as i miss sentai, i love that omegahorn doesn't feel as beholden to hook sentai viewers as much as gavan infinity. it can be its own thing, and it shows with its execution.
a big thing i'm interested in is that eval alliance versus our good guys. the eval alliance aren't bad guys per say, but they certainly aren't the squeaky clean types either. they want to protect the populace, while also beating up hunters to do so. i'm curious as to how they got that way and how they'll intersect with shout's group later on. my guess is that it has something to do with eval's ego and such, though it's still early on.
another thing i'm intrigued by is whole gavan of it all. we got a sneak peak of what the gavans are doing sans reiji, and they seem to be doing fine, but i want more y'all. i know we're probably going to get more later on, especially since we got not!reiji-except-he-probably-is(?), but like. how are daisuke and agi doing? has kunai taken up some of reiji's duties? what's up with the cult and have they made any headway? so many things to ponder, so little time...
my last thought is that i'm genuinely surprised by how endeared i am by eir and ai haha. ngl, i thought they would be a bit more annoying
the addendum now that i watched the hunters' record and gavan gaiden (thank you @t-u-i-t-c for letting me know about the latter!)
based on my conversational understanding of japanese, it seems while the bushido and luminous teams are handling the emons and nega emorgears, the infinity team + kunai are trying to figure out what exactly happened to reiji. the first gaiden doesn't give much else other than that, so i'm curious as to how they will incorporate this into the future -- whether in a separate movie or in the actual series itself. there's also the gavan infinity vs raiya v-cinema, so i hope that we'll get more clarification soon.
i'm probably going to eat my words later, but my one standing issue is that this kind of information is being saved for ttfc exclusive series rather than the proper series. i would've liked to see this unfold as the main story was going on, though i do get why they did it. omegahorn needs more time to develop on its own before we get to the crossover stuff, though i do question the significance of putting the bushido and luminous stuff in the episode proper rather than the infinity stuff because of not!reiji and all that. idk, it's just not the release strategy i would've thought of, but there are probably people at toei who've thought of this stuff already and know why this strategy is best.

i really enjoyed it! imo, omegahorn feels very confident to me, if that makes sense. i think part of the problem with gavan infinity was that it was trying to be both familiar while also stretching the toku formula, which ended up with mixed results. i'm probably jumping the gun a bit, but omegahorn to me feels like it has more of a solid footing to go in its own direction, rather than cling to old tropes. tomioka knows how to make a good impression, so i'm interested to see where he's going with the series both story-wise and characters-wise. the world feels like it's rich for exploration, so i hope that we don't lose that down the line.
probably the thing i'm the most interested in is how intertwined gavan infinity and omegahorn will be. i want it to stand out on its own obviously, but i'm curious as to how they're going to tie up the bigger unresolved plotlines of gavan infinity. we're already going to be seeing the gavan characters in the second episode so i'm wondering if they're going to be playing a much bigger role than we expected.
last note: i'm quickly becoming terribly fond of shout and enkaku's whole thing lol

In Memoriam…Ohba Kenji
In memory of Ohba Kenji-san, who was stronger and kinder than anyone else.

It should probably go without saying that my first encounter with Ohba Kenji-san was through a crt television. I remember it was around the time that "Battle Fever J" (1970), which originally began on Aomori Broadcasting's 6 a.m. Sunday morning block, had its time slot changed and became an evening program.
During the opening credits, Ohba-san's Akebono Shiro, who looked like Tarzan, is seen performing tremendous jumps and then walking down Nishishinjuku with a baby elephant at his side. I had watched both "Himitsu Sentai Gorenger" and "J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai" too, but no other character had made such an impactful entrance. I felt that the "animal action" in Battle Kenya that Shiro transforms into (who I later found out Ohba-san was also the Suit Actor for) was even more powerful than the Amazon Rider, who I had really loved during my kindergarten days. Putting it simply, Ohba-san was a person who made an impact in every aspect.
The following year, Ohba-san played Oume Daigoro, also known as DenziBlue, in "Denshi Sentai Denziman" (1980). Ohba-san was the first cast member to appear in two consecutive seasons of Super Sentai without time to rest, and this too was unprecedented. He also broke the pattern of Blue's being cool and handsome, and the way he was characterized as someone who loved anpan to an addictive level was also great. Daigoro managed to lighten things up even as the final episode approached and the mood was serious, which only made Ohba Kenji-san's presence in my life grow stronger
And then, if things had continued as they had been, this would've been about my memories of "Space Sheriff Gavan" (1982), but I didn't watch Gavan as it aired. For some reason, Gavan wasn't broadcast in my hometown.
Before long, I moved to Tokyo, and began connecting with people who shared my interests. It was then that I was finally able to watch Space Sheriff Gavan. Having watched Gavan nearly 6 years after the finale of Denziman, the scenes contained constant surprises, and Ohba-san's acting had become sharp and refined. While maintaining a semi good looking image and approachable demeanor, Ichijoji Retsu expressed a full range of emotions, from his serious expressions to the sadness he carried on his shoulders. Moreover, his smile was as gentle as that of Akebono Shiro or Oume Daigoro…I believe that Ichijoji Retsu was a character that represented the culmination of Ohba-san's talent. It was undoubtedly his defining role.
Of course, Ohba-san wasn't just an actor known for Gavan. I'll personally never forget him as Inukai Genpachi from the 1983 film "Satomi Hakkenden." Despite being introduced as a samurai general on the side of evil, he eventually opened his eyes to justice through a "transition of emotions." And, during his harrowing final scene, I felt as if I witnessed the vast range of Ohba-san's expressive prowess as an actor.
Many years passed as I held onto those memories, when I then had the opportunity to directly meet Ohba-san. I remember it was through my involvement as a planning consultant for the manga "Space Sheriff Gavan: Kuroki Eiyuu". When I headed to the ryotei in Kagurazaka with Editor T-san, sure enough, Ohba-san was there. Forgive me for saying such a cliche thing, but Ohba-san was an openhearted, truly good person. The saying goes, "The stronger they are, the gentler their smile is," which I think perfectly describes someone like him.
On our way back home, we took Ohba-san to his lodging by taxi. The words he spoke and the bow he gave as he got out of the car are still burned into my memory. "Ohba-san was thankful from the bottom of his heart, wasn't he"……I found myself saying something like that to T-san as we headed home.
The other day, his time came. When news of Ohba Kenji-san's passing broke, lots of people posted photos of themselves with Ohba-san, along with words of their condolences. Ohba-san was smiling in every photo, and so were the people next to him.
It's as if Ohba-san finished his mission of bringing smiles to tons of people and has departed for the galaxy.
i don't think the series was bad overall. there were a lot of moments that i did enjoy, like reiji's arc and kunai's introduction. however, i do think that the series had a little too much filler and not enough story to counterbalance. i stated this before, but gavan infinity felt like it was a series that was supposed to be 50 episodes, but only got 23 to flesh out its story. for a series that has more ambitious leaning, it felt really "small" for lack of a better term up until the final arc. for me, it's fairly middle of the ground. i am giving it a lot of grace for it being the first project red series, but i did have a good time with it all things considered.
i am curious as to how they're going to follow up on that ending. like, woof -- reiji disappearing, the cult still being around, the overall depressing note? there has to be more to it than that with how they left things off. tomioka is writing omegahorn next year so i'm wondering if they are going to use the series to continue gavan infinity in some way.
