     Samantha had fallen asleep. That hadn’t been a part of their original evening plans, but it had happened so late in the night Samuel didn’t want to wake her up. Having her drive around at this hour? It wasn’t safe, wasn’t practical. He wouldn’t even consider it. So, last night, instead of leaving her on the couch, Samuel tried to do the gentlemanly thing and carry her to his bed instead. Ignoring how much he probably would have liked to join her, he had simply tucked her in and opted for the couch instead. Simple. Easy - even if he didn’t get that much sleep.

     That was how he had ended up back in his bedroom this morning, anyway. Standing there, plate of eggs and toast in hand and a glass of water in the other - taking the briefest second to admire how he liked seeing her there.. But she had made it clear that they were friends. That was fine. Samuel blinked, breaking his train of thought before crossing the room to sit on the edge of the bed next to her, careful not to move the mattress too much.

“Samantha.” His voice was quiet, barely a mumble as he set the glass down on the nightstand. Hand newly free, Samuel let it rest gently on her arm, giving it the smallest squeeze. “Breakfast.”

a  slow  languid  stretch  of  tired  muscles,    fluttering  of  lashes  as  she  inhales  deep  and  is  met  with  a  mixture  of  smells  that  instantly  sets  off  the  red  flags  of  her  still  waking  mind.     this  isn’t  her  bed,    no  overwhelming  weight  of  cheeto  pressed  onto  her  chest,    no  warm  smell  of  vanilla  wafting  out  from  her  pillows    -    instead  she’s  met  with  a  familiar  cologne  and   ...   eggs?    the  low  grumble  of  a  voice  and  a  hand  on  her  arm  is  what  sets  it  all  off,    sends  samantha  scrambling  back  up  against  the  pillows  behind  her  as  her  eyes  flash  open  wide.    heart  thundering  in  her  chest,    it  takes  her  a  moment  to  settle,    acknowledge  each  detail  of  her  surroundings  before  she  relaxes.    “   sam.   ”

hand  brought  up  to  her  face  to  wipe  the  sleep  from  her  eyes  and  allow  her  to  hide  her  blush  and  the  embarrassment,   she  clears  her  throat  before  righting  herself  in  his  sheets.    “    you   -   scared  me  a  bit,    sorry.    breakfast?     did  i  fall  asleep?    how’d  i    -    did  you  carry  me  to  bed  or  something?    you  didn’t  have  to  do  that,    i  could’ve   ...    you  could’ve  woken  me  up  and  sent  me  home,    i  didn’t  mean  to  be  this  much  of  a  bother  or  anything.    ”    always  rambling,    words  falling  from  her  mouth  a  mile  a  minute  as  samantha  shifts  her  gaze  from  his  face  to  the  plate  of  food  then  back  to  the  unwrinkled  sheets  next  to  her.    it  wasn’t  surprising  that  she’d  been  here  alone    -   for  all  the  rumors  everyone  seemed  to  spread  about  him,   sam  had  never  been  anything  less  than  a  gentleman  to  her.     careful.    kind.    

The way I almost committed seven felonies in a Trader Joe’s this morning. All I wanted was some salmon and everything bagels; not the headache fucking Chad and Brad duo gave me because they kept following me around like lost puppies.
