           𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞  𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞  𝐨𝐧  𝐣𝐢𝐧'𝐬  𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐬  -   she  gets  it  .   she  barely  gets  time  to  go  to  the  tea  place  and  gawk  at  lee  ,   much  less  make  a  lot  of  friends  .   most  of  hers  come  from  WORK  ,   or  through  her  parents  .   being  a  girl  in  the  lower  ring  of  ba  sing  se  isn’t  the  most  friend  friendly  environment  ,   but  at  least  there’s  SOME  opportunities  .    ‘  it’s  tough  ,  ’   she  agrees  ,   grabbing  the  other’s  hand  and  squeezing  it  .    ‘  do  you  work ?  ’    she  does  ,   not  enough  ,   as  it’s  obvious  in  her  clothing  .   drops  the  girl’s  hand  ,   deep  blush  filling  her  cheeks !    ‘  oh  gosh  ,   no !  he  doesn’t  even  know  i  exist !  ’    it’s  a  work  in  progress  ,   promise  .  

       𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐬  𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞  ,   𝐛𝐮𝐭   𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲'𝐫𝐞  𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞  teasing  than  threatening  ,   and  breaks  into  a  grin  at  the  girl  .    ‘  are  you  suuuuuure  you’re  not  a  goddess !?  ’   she  double  checks  ,   though  the  easy  grin  is  meant  to  calm  her  ,   jin  leans  back  .    ‘  i’m  kind  of  jealous  .   you  look  really  good  .  ’    pouts  as  she  looks  at  her  RAGS  .   she  has  a  nice  body  ,   but  these  clothes  did  nothing  for  it  -  and  she  didn’t  know  a  thing  about  makeup  .    ‘  what’s  the  uniform  for ?  ’  

         𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞  𝐡𝐚𝐝  𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧  ...  𝐛𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐬  𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠  the  dinner  ,   but  the  beginning  is  no  means  to  an  end  .   oddly  enough  ,   the  fact  that  he’s  simply  THERE  with  her  ,   is  enough  to  give  her  confidence  to  continue  .   she  likes  him  ,   he’s  not  running  away    (   well  ...  yet  ,   lets  not  get  ahead  of  yourself  here  ,   jin  -  the  tides  are  ALWAYS  changing  )  .   and  ,   well  ,   she  likes  him  .   a  lot  .   they  say  love  is  blind  ,   and  this  isn’t  love   (  somewhere  ...  the  potential  is  there  )   ,   she’s  never  been  in  love  -  but  the  way  she  wants  this  to  keep  going  and  going  no  matter  how  awkward  it  gets  ,   might  be  the  closest  thing  to  it  .   bites  lips  ,   lets  him  step  away  .     ‘  there  MIGHT  be  an  all  day  café  around  here  -  i’ve  only  heard  about  it  ,   never  been  -  ’    casts  him  a  glance  ,   catches  the  glimpse  of  that  handsome  smile  and  confidence  surges  through  her  .    ‘  you  know  what ?  i  trust  you  .  ’    wonders  if  it’s  too  soon  to  take  his  hand  .    ‘  the  café  is  near  my  place  ,   if  ...  ’   if  you’re  like  her  ,   lee  ,   and  don’t  want  the  night  to  end  JUST  yet  .    ‘  you’re  up  for  grabbing  dessert  .  ’  

            𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐦𝐚𝐲  𝐛𝐞  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭  sort  of  girl  ,   but  that  doesn’t  erase  the  PERSISTENCE  she  acts  with  .   jin  is  a  girl  in  the  city  of  ba  sing  se  ,   and  you  don’t  get  anywhere  in  this  city  without  knowing  how  to  take  CHARGE  .    ‘  there’s  a  war  going  on  right  now  .   everything’s  complicated  .  ’    tries  to  sympathize  ,   but  she’s  HURT  ,   instead  wants  answers  .    ‘  lee  ,   you  can’t  just  say  that  and  expect  me  to  not  ask  why  .  ’ 

         𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐜𝐚𝐧  𝐠𝐞𝐭  𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬  ,   𝐛𝐮𝐭  the  boys  she  goes  out  with  ...  they  always  like  her  more  than  she  likes  them  .   jin  had  been  nervous  ,   no  matter  how  good  she  was  at  faking  it  ,   the  butterflies  in  her  stomach  is  real  .   and  he’d  been  so  kind  ;   perhaps  a  bit  soft  spoken  ,   a  bit  shy  -  and  she  liked  that  about  lee  .   she’s  warm  &  fuzzy  when  their  gazes  lock  ,   lips  quirk  up  at  him  into  a  genuine  smile  .   his  hold  feels  safe  ,   she  feels  content  ,   and  since  becoming  a  refuge :   jin  hasn’t  felt  that  way  in  a  very  long  time  ,   even  in  ba  sing  se  .   her  crush  had  rooted  in  she  thinking  she  could  be  good  for  him  and  now  she  sees  he  could  be  good  for  her  too  .     ‘  a  nice  action  deserves  a  thank  you  ,  ’   she  says  quietly  ,   not  wanting  to  pull  away  from  his  warmth  just  yet  .   the  night  always  was  a  bit  chilly  .    ‘  you’re  warm  .   i  like  it  .  ’    now  that’s  bold  ,   and  she’s  glad  he  can’t  see  her  face  right  now  .    ‘  i  had  a  wonderful  time  with  you  ,   lee  .  ’  

         𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐬  𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧  𝐥𝐞𝐞'𝐬  𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐞  spots  her  again  .   it’s  to  be  expected  ,   and  she’s  kinda  disappointed  that  his  nephew  isn’t  around  ,   but  -  maybe  she  could  get  some  information  out  of  him ?    ‘  you  know  ,   i  don’t  think  i  ever  got  your  name  .  ’    might  as  well  start  out  with  some  small  talk  .  

          ‘  𝐲𝐨𝐮  𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤  𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐲  .  ’    and  she’s  not  trying  to  insult  the  bald  boy  ,   rather  making  commentary  than  anything  else  .    ‘  have  you  been  to  the  jasmine  dragon ?  it’s  the  best  tea  place  in  the  city  .  ’    and  it’s  NOT  just  because  she  has  the  biggest  crush  on  the  owner’s  nephew  ,    he  hasn’t  even  been  around  lately  .    ‘  like  the  best  ,   and  this  place  is  huge !   ’  

          𝐬𝐡𝐞'𝐬  𝐧𝐨𝐭  𝐚  𝐟𝐚𝐧  𝐨𝐟  her  body’s  immediate  reaction  to  him  .   what  used  to  be  good  butterflies  now  felt  more  like  ...  flies  of  disappointment  .   it  was  just  one  date  ,   but  she  finds  herself  drawn  to  him   (  of  course  you  do  ,   feelings  don’t  go  away  just  like  that  )  .    ‘  you  know  it’s  good  to  talk  to  people  ,   right ?  ’   steps  closer  ,   doesn’t  touch  his  face  ,   not  this  time  .    ‘  lee  ,   it’s  exhausting  having  to  run  all  the  time  ...  ’   she  knows  ,   jin  hadn’t  felt  RELIEF  until  she  reached  ba  sing  se  .  lips  purse  ,   she  looks  down  ,   dark  hair  covers  her  face  like  a  curtain  .   it’s  a  self  defense  mechanism  .    ‘   you’re  hurt  ,   you  have  the  right  to  talk  about  what  hurts  .   just  ...  take  out  the  details  that  gives  too  much  away  .  ’  

                                   she’s  never  been  in  the  presence  of  royalty  .  

          ‘  𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞  𝐲𝐨𝐮  𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝  𝐛𝐞  𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝  other  people  then  ,   too  .  ’   offers  unsolicited  advice  ,   was  never  asked  ,   but  thinks  the  other  girl  needs  to  hear  it  .   jin  knows  what  it’s  like  to  be  FORCED  to  be  in  one  group  ,   the  only  people  surrounding her :   sometimes  ,   you  simply  needed  something  new  .   something  that  would  lift  your  spirits  ,   even  if  it  was  never  meant  to  last  .     ‘  oh  ,   neither  have  i !   but  there’s  no  time  like  the  present  ,   right ?  ’    jin  asks  with  a  giggle  ,   the  energy  of  the  other  girl  balancing  perfectly  against  her  own  .   yeah  ,   she  needs  this  too  .    ‘  i  don’t  know  about  FIX  -  but  make  happy ?   yeah  ...   it’s  the  little  things  ,   you  know ?   like  he  doesn’t  smile  enough  ,   but  deserves  to  smile  !  ’  

      𝐢𝐭'𝐬  𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝  .   𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬  𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫  in  her  head  ,   even  MONTHS  after  their   (  tragically  ending  )   date  .   and  she  swears  she’s  not  STALKING  him  ,   jin  has  more  self  control  than  that  ,   knows  when  she’s  not  wanted  around  .   she  has  to  protect  her  heart  at  some  point  ,   too  .   but  when  she  sees  him  ,   in  a  dark  scene  that’s  so  similar  to  that  first  night  ,   something  tugs  at  her  heart  .    ‘  hey  ,   lee !  ’   she  calls  out  from  behind  him  ,   pushing  herself  off  the  wall  .     ‘  whatever  it  is  ,   whatever’s  complicated  -  ’   because  she’s  bold  ,   but  sure  isn’t  a  mindreader  .    ‘  you  don’t  have  to  run  .   you  could  stay  .  ’    not  even  she’s  sure  what  she  means  by  that  ,   but  felt  like  it  needed  to  be  SAID  .  

        𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐞  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐛𝐞  𝐬𝐨  𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝  to  gaze  at  the  other  woman  ,   completely  mystified  by  the  makeup ?  but  of  course !  jin’s  never  been  the  shy  kind  ,   and  everything  about  the  other  woman  was  ...  ADMIRABLE  .   this  was  the  type  of  woman  she  could  never  be  ,   she  thinks  -  she  can  see  the  strength  ,   power  in  each  movement  .   she’s  not  blind  ,   knows  this  woman  is  a  WARRIOR  from  how  she  carries  herself  .     ‘  wow  -  ’   jin  says  ,   speaking  loudly  enough  to  capture  the  attention  of  the  other  .    ‘  you’re  just  ...  WOW !  ’  

      𝐢𝐭'𝐬  𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥  ,   𝐚𝐧𝐝  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐡𝐚𝐬  an  inkling  that  not  everything  is  what  it  seems  ,   but  who  is  SHE  to  make  any  rash  decisions ?   all  jin  knows  is  that  this  ...  cute  boy  from  the  tea  shop  did  something  to  make  her  feel  better  .   that  has  to  mean  something  ...  right ?  smaller  girl  turns  to  him  ,   eyes  shine  as  she  gazes  at  his  face  .    ‘  lee  ...  this  is  BEAUTIFUL !   how  on  earth ... ?  ’   and  her  hazel  hues  search  his  golden  ones  ,   doesn’t  really  want  an  answer    (  and  if  she  already  knows  it  ,   she  doesn’t  think  she  cares  )  .   instead  ,   gentle  arms  wrap  around  his  neck  ,   face  flushed  against  his  chest  .    ‘  thank  you  .  ’
