What is it about moths that we find so captivating? Is it their nocturnal lifestyle? Their attraction to lights and their association with the moon? Perhaps it's the moth's association with death and decay that gets under our skin. Or maybe it's their impressive variety in sizes, colors, shapes, patterns, and antennae that make them exotic to some and unsettling to others. Moths have made their way into my work for a few years now, so much so that I felt compelled to change my butterfly logo to a moth instead, specifically a hawkmoth. I use hawkmoths, luna moths, and emperor moths in my work for several reasons. Mostly, because I love spooky things. But also because I think moths represent non-traditional beauty. I have a few more close-ups to share from my latest update, but I’ve moved on to the legends side and I though it would be interesting to share the difference between the two types of stories. What makes a legend different than a myth is that the former has a perceived seed of truth at its heart. Legends are the kind of stories that inspire real world quests and send treasure hunters to the far corners of the earth. With that in mind, I want to take a closer look at the tiny little goblet I shared last week. It’s my interpretation of the Holy Grail. This vintage miniature goblet was part of a set I found during the height of my steampunk and upcycling days. I knew I could add a cast tube setting and a cubic zirconia in the middle, but that alone didn’t make it look like the Holy Grail. So I used a texturing hammer and dapping block to age the cup. My last myth-inspired post is another look at Medusa, one of the most notorious female figures of Greek mythology. Medusa, daughter of the goddess Ceto, became famous both because of her deadly serpentine hair, and because her monstrous fate was a punishment from the goddess Athena for having sex with Poseidon in the former's temple. And in some interpretations of the story, Medusa was take by force. This makes her story even more important for contemporary feminists, as one of the earliest instances of victim-blaming in mythology. This piece is full of emotion any way you slice it. The carved bone of Medusa's lovely face comes from the talented hands of @indobonecraft. Here is a closer look at my oracle pendant. This design is a bit of a throwback to some of the crystal pieces I made before the pandemic. I chose this technique to convey mysticism and natural beauty. The concept of a female prophet can be found in many stories from the ancient world, particularly those from Greek mythology. Whether she was worshiped from afar as a goddess or consulted in human form (during a trance state) for guidance, an oracle was generally considered to be delivering wisdom directly from a god or gods. This petite moon pendant is my interpretation of the Greek goddess Selene. She was the ancient deity who personified the moon. Often depicted with a crescent crown, she is a daughter of titans and a sister to the sun. She is associated with the oceans and romantic or passionate love. Selene was invoked in love spells, and penitents asked for her blessings and help in affairs of the heart. I couldn't very well create a Myths & Legends update without including a symbol of one of mythology's most iconic creatures, and one of my favourite designs to make, the dragon’s egg. Dragons have been woven into mythologies around the world, but I have included them with my Greek myths, owing to the etymological origin of the word coming from the Ancient Greek word drákōn, or the Latin draconem. Dragons have spread their wings throughout European and Asian stories for thousands of years, and they continue thriving in contemporary fantasy. This versatile creature is one that humans have heartily wanted to believe in since their origins, creating versions that are deadly, magical, spiritual, and all of the above. These little jötunn siblings feature a fusion of deer antlers, a wolf skull, and human arms. They each have a gem offering made of Swarovski crystal, one orange like the embers of a smoldering fire, one soft blue like arctic ice. I loved playing with the wild variety of size and feature descriptions that mythology attributes to the jötnar of Jötunheimr. They are all described as supernatural entities, either neutral or evil, possibly having a role in bringing about Ragnarok. Here’s another look at Odin’s eye, complete with the story behind it. The father figure of the Norse pantheon is often depicted in ancient art and literature as having only one eye, as shown in the Prose Edda. This is because Odin plucked out his right eye and dropped it into the well of Mimir in exchange for one drink. The sacrifice was part of a ritual to obtain wisdom and knowledge. The physical eye was volunteered willingly as a trade for omniscient sight. A personal sacrifice we can interpret as having incalculable value to a deity and a leader. The glass eye shown here was crafted by Janel Dudley Beads. And it is set in sterling silver hand-fabricated by yours truly. I added Elder Futhark runes in letters corresponding to north, south, east, and west, using the idea of a compass to nod at the eye's all-seeing power.
