Osona is a district whose capital city is Vic. This city was already important in Ancient Roman times (nowadays there’s still a Roman temple standing) when it was called Ausa. In the 8th and 9th centuries, it was part of the border that separated the Frankish Christian kingdom in the north from the Muslim caliphate in the south. In the year 788, the city was destroyed in a Muslim attack and only one quarter survived: one Vicus. It started to be called Vicus Ausonensis (Ausa’s quarter). With time, the Latin word for “quarter” (Vicus) became the name of the city.

Many famous people from Catalan culture are from Osona. For example, the famous poets and writers Jacint Verdaguer, Miquel Martí i Pol, Emili Teixidor, Maria Àngels Anglada, Segimon Serrallonga; the bands Sau and Esquirols; the musicians Rafael Subirachs, Quimi Portet and Pep Sala; the illustrator Pilarín Bayés; the urbanist Ildefons Cerdà, among others.
