I donāt usually care for show!verse SanSan but I absolutely love the difference in how Sophie delivers the two āYou wonāt hurt me.ā lines. The first time, when she says that to Sandor in the staircase, she says it in an almost daring āYou canāt touch me because youāll get in trouble.ā way. Like sheās trying to convince herself that Sandor canāt hurt her to make herself less nervous. But the second time, at the Battle of Blackwater, she says āYou wonāt hurt me.ā with a sort of breathy awe in her voice like for the first time sheās realizing that Sandor can hurt her but he wonāt, like sheās seeing for the first time that heās not just a scary, mean man but someone who is a lot like her who has also been abused and hurt by the same people. It breaks my heart because this is the first time in a long time that someone has had the power to hurt her and has chosen not to, and we hear that in her voice.
Itās also signifiant how Sandor responses to that line both times. In both scenes, that line makes Sandor pause for a moment, because Sansa is calling him on his bluff but he doesnāt know how to say why he cares about her, he doesnāt even understand why himself. In the staircase, Sandor doubles down on his āGrr, grr, I am very scary.ā act by shaking Sansaās arm a little and demanding in a harsher tone that she sing. But at the Battle of Blackwater, after his pause, Sandor says in an awed, gentle tone that echoes Sansaās āNo, little bird, I wonāt hurt you.ā. That was as close to a love confession as we got, in my opinion. It was at least a confession that Sandor isnāt as callous as he pretends to be and that he cares about Sansa.
