When I visit temples, I often notice frog statues tucked away in all kinds of places. And even when I’m just walking down the street — there’s a frog here, a frog there…

Recently, I started wondering: why?

It turns out that in Japan, frogs are considered symbols of good luck and safe returns. The Japanese word for “frog” is かえる (kaeru), which sounds exactly like the verb 帰る (kaeru) — “to return,” most often meaning to return home.

I don’t know whether Kishimoto intended this from the beginning, but the fact that Naruto’s summoning animal is a frog 🥹🥹🥹

(Well, technically a toad, but kaeru is a more general word that can refer to both frogs and toads, even though there’s also a more specific word for toads: がま.)

So what does that mean?
