A nicely-made video by the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which looks at this complex of buildings. The design inspiration came from local ruins of 3rd Century Buddhist Monasteries, which utilised handmade bricks. The structures include pavilion forms and green roofs to provide ventilation and temperature stabilisation, removing the need for air conditioning. (Image © Hélène Binet, via wallpaper)

The Vienna Secession may seem distant and of little importance, except in its indirect influence on Art Nouveau through Alphonse Mucha, but that view ignores the rich art histories of central and eastern European countries that gave rise to it.  Of the forty-nine co-founders of the Vienna Secession, seven were based in the Polish city of Kraków, a group which included our artist here, Teodor Axentowicz, whose art is now almost unknown outside Poland but at the time was internationally renowned. He trained initially at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany, between 1879-82, then moved to Paris to study under Carolus-Duran and others until the early 1890s.  While there, he painted this picture – a quick oil sketch of a woman clad completely in black who stares vacantly towards the viewer –  which may reflect his own sense of isolation in the cosmopolitan city so distant and different from the land of his birth.
