if we can still prompt fic-- jane/thor 12 monkeys au? you mentioned it in your tags before and i haven't been able to get the idea out of my head since!
i once started this a long time a go, i think the version i have needs to be reworked a lot bc what i wrote is very Conceptual and i was going with a poetry prose moment but here:
Thor remembers how everything didn’t end. Remembers Jane. How she took in the end of the realms into herself and splintered herself across the stars. He remembers every moment before and will never forget every moment after. How Loki yelled, his anger and disbelief warring in his voice as Jane pulled the power into her. Her light making his shadow even longer than Thor’s ever could have. How Sif shouted, shock overwhelming her as Jane ended and universe restarted. How Loki and Sif had to drag him away his grief threatening to destroy a realm, the ground cracking under the force of the lightning that crashed down for the dark thunderclouds that started the moment she was gone. How Heimdall had looked as if stars no longer shone the same once they had reached Asgard. Tony and Banner’s faces when he returned to Midgard without her, their faces breaking down in grief for she was their sister of the mind. How Darcy raged and broke down in his arms because he was supposed to save her. How Steve gently took her from Thor’s arms, his eyes full of too much sympathy and understanding.
Every moment after was pain, never ending pain as her face in her final moments, eyes bright with the universe and love looked at him and she smiled.
Jane who had held the aether in her, who had dreamed of the universe ending countless times, even after the stone was pulled from her. Jane who understood more of the cosmos than any human should and still survive. She had smiled at the end of the world and swallowed it all, holding it all in her as called the aether and its siblings forward once more and curled around herself and the end.
Critical Role: Fans and Art and Community Last week Critical Role celebrated its fourth year and it made me think a lot about the show and it’s relationship with fanart.

Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay (1980-83); Christo and Jeanne Claude.
…they stood in the time of unknowing…, …while the dew is still on the roses… (2018); Ebony G. Patterson
Two of my favourite rooms at the PAMM, each room took you on a different journey of the artists’ works. ‘Surrounded Islands’ is an archival exhibition of the materials and artwork focusing on the site-specific installation…
so technically i have a couple more scenes (carol shows up, we go to to nidavellir, etc) in my head because I can very easily just turn this into my spec for avengers 4, but i'm letting it lie here for now. part of this is bc way back in chapter one's comments i got an idea for the hammer. in my mind it was always broken bc i was keeping this fic as much "in canon" as i could, but then i realised how i'd changed that and have the hammer be whole again. so, look out for that.... sooooon??????
and if i do more fosterson week stuff it'll all be here: fosterson week
I’M TRYING TO FINISH THIS BUT IT’S HARD GOING GUYS, MAYBE POSTING LITTLE BY LITTLE ON HERE WILL HELP ME. NO PROMISES. CONCRIT/REBLOGS/POKING ME TO FINISH IS ALL WELCOME I NEED A KICK IN MY BUTT MY DUDES.
PART ONE AND TWO (this has becoming WILDLY AU BTW)
SUMMARY: Together Thor and Jane have to navigate the state of Asgard in the Nine, Odin’s judgement on their relationship, a war that oncoming, and oh yeah, Loki is back.
note: TOTALLY UNBETAD. idk what i’m doing anymore except finish it and have it not suck.
chapter 1 /
.blade
Her eyes tracked him around the room easily. Made easier because he was not trying to hide, but still she knew she could not let guard down. Every step he took she measured the distance between them. Her teeth would clench every time he got too close, to her, to them. Every time he looked up and locked eyes with her, he would raise a singular brow, the corresponding side of his mouth lifting as well. Every time her fingers itched for her blade. He’d take a step back, but stand closer than before.
Games, he was always playing games.
Curling her fingers by her side, Sif’s eyes followed Loki across the room. They narrowed on the glint of metal by his throat where the gold inlay of his tunic met his skin.
Sif did not like that Loki could stand so close to Jane or Thor. She did not like the looks he gave them as Jane moved between her mirrors and her notes. The look was familiar; cool, calculating, contemplative. He used to the same when they would spar, looking for the opening to attack or to manipulate. He would almost always succeed. She liked that even less.
He spoke little to her. Spoke little to anyone not Thor or his mother, and due to necessity and the fact she threw books at him, he spoke to Jane as well. That had been truly the first moment she understood that Jane was fearless in a way that was hidden to most. In a way that had Sif quietly pledge her sword to her whenever she’d need it. Thor was fearless in a similar way and Thor had needed her sword more than once.
None of this knowledge hid the one fact that ate at Sif:
She counted the distance between them every time she entered the room.
.history of ash
Thor thought it interesting watching Jane and Loki work at this problem with the Bifrost. Loki told them of the thin spots, places Thor had known existed but never considered to be important. He knew the history of Asgard as well as crowned prince show, which was to say, he knew a lot about the realm. Maybe not everything, Asgard’s history was as old as time itself. The realms first breath born from the clashing of fire and ice in Ginnungagap as Audhumla gave life and milk to the cosmos. Ymir was born from that clash, the world was born of his carcass.
That was the story told. The truth was more complicated, but that was the story told.
Thor knew this.
Before his father there had been Bor and before Bor there had been Buri, who Audhumala had nursed herself. Asgard had been nothing until the sons before him but as Thor remembered Jotunheim and thought of it’s desolate landscape now ravaged by the force of two of Asgard’s son. He thought of Loki, his brother, stolen from the realm, he wonder what the price of Asgard’s shine had been. He’d been to planets outside the Nine and only was it in Midgard, kept separate from the rest due to their mortality and relative newness in the universe, that he ever saw the population of these world grow and flourish. Slatverhiem was an empty world. Alfhiem and Vanaheim quiet and meek under Asgard’s guardianship. Nividair orbited it’s own space, the dwarves keeping separate from the Nine as the ran their forge. Asgard went to them when they needed weapons of great power. Few of Asgard’s mighty weapons, Thor had come to realised, had been born on Asgard itself. A thought that picked at him, but not one he could linger on now.
The remaining two realms of the Nine were Hel and Muspelhiem. Hel was for the dead and Muspelheim… Muspelhiem forever raged against the Realm Eternal but never had it’s forces been able to breach their boundaries until now. Sutur’s crown could not reach the Realm Eternal’s flame.
He had never thought too deeply about what or who had built Asgard, about the realms that held up the branches that allowed Asgard it’s place at the top of Yggdrasil. He had never thought at what had to be sacrificed build Asgard until now either.
Walking away from the training grounds back to Jane’s study, Thor turned thoughts from the history of the Nine to the present. Moving through the halls, he paused in the throne room where the history of Asgard was inlaid on the ceiling. A history of prosperity and light shone down at him and something inside him itched. A sigh escaped him as he turned his eye to the throne.
He had dreamt— no, not dreamt, he had once felt entitled to the throne. The right of the first born, of an Odinson. Now, he looked at it and saw shackles. He saw war. He saw pain and death. How his father born the burden of the throne, Thor could not really know. Why Loki coveted it, he did not understand. The more the considered the throne and his place on it, the more his mind turned to that morning on Midgard after sleeping on Jane’s roof. How quickly that morning had turned and how in that moment looking at the Destroyer and seeing his brother in the flames, he understood more about the importance of a single life and a single action than all the battles before had taught him. He thought about how that morning he had been ready to spend his days on Midgard with Jane in her small town under a sky full of mystery. How he had been content with that truth.
But Asgard called, as it always did in his bones. The throne however did not. Not as it once did. In truth, the only time he could bare the idea was when he pictured Jane by his side, but that was an unfair future to push on to her if she did not want it.
Confronted with more warning emotions instead of less, Thor continued his way to Jane’s study.
As soon as he stepped in, all three inhabitants of the room turned to him.
Sif stood still, her sword at Loki’s neck. Loki, his eyes rolled to the heavens, and then delicately pushed the blade away from his throat with one finger. Jane was laughing. As soon as she saw him, she dropped back into a chair, and laughed harder.
Thor slowly made his away across the room to Jane. “Should I even ask?”
Sif spun her sword and sheathed it with, frankly, an unnecessary flair, but Thor grasped the point of it. “I will kill him one day,” she said stalking out of the room.
Jane called out to Sif about dinner and Sif gave her a wave of acknowledgment then slammed the doors to the room. Well then, at the very least, those two weren’t at odds. Now that, Thor truly feared. Smoothing his hand over Jane’s shoulder, he turned to his brother.
“What did you do?”
Loki twisted his nose. “What makes you think I did anything?”
“1400 years of experience, brother.”* (Yes, Thor is 1500, but Loki is younger okay.)
Jane snorted.
“Hmm,” Loki hummed, turning to the book he had in his hand. He flipped through a few pages and dropped them by Jane. Thor eyed the movement, ready for any trick. “Here is what I was talking about, before that debacle.”
Jane immediately pulled the book closer to her and began skimming over it. “She was totally right, you know?”
“Was she?” Loki sneered, but his tone was more mocking than malevolent.
Thor looked between them. “About what?”
“Our dear Sif seems to have very defined thoughts about how exactly I should be redeeming myself in light of my past actions.”
Oh.
Thor was familiar with Sif’s thoughts on the matter. They wavered between having Loki commit to a century of grovelling or cutting off several limbs, usually she leaned heavily on whatever allowed her to use her fist or sword.
“And what made you think that you should even talk to her about the matter; you know she’s furious with you.” As she should be, as we all are, went unsaid, but Thor knew his brother heard it.
Loki eyed Jane. “New York came up in our discussion today.”
Oh.
Jane sighed, flipping through the pages of the text. “It’s pertinent. The portal the Chitari opened above the city might be the key to figuring out how to travel with the Bifrost again.”
“You think we’ll have to resort to portals? They are handy, I will admit, but without a stabilising conduit like the Observatory, the engery requirement must be immense.” Thor sat, pulling Jane’s notes to him. Loki’s script coloured the edges of the pages crossing some things out, emphasising others. Jane wrote over those notes too.
“They would be astronomical,” Jane agreed, “but that’s not what I’m thinking of doing. Well, not in the long run.”
“She’s mad… More reckless than you, which I thought would be impossible. She’s also talking about things that are not probable .” Loki said, pulling the notebook Thor was reading and flipping a few pages ahead. “Look.”
Jane threw a pen a Loki. “You’re only saying that because you don’t like the implication of it.”
Thor met Loki’s gaze and found what he saw there worrisome. He looked down at Jane’s notes. She had sketched Yggdrasil with all twists and turns. She had the branches expanding outward between the realms, connecting them, but there were also branches that expanded outward into the infinite. She had triad of roots, too. Urdhr, Mimir, and Hvgerlmir. Next to their names she had the runes for destiny, wisdom, and seethe. Thor looked back up at Loki. This is what his brother wanted him to see. Not Jane’s plans, but the runes.
The language of Svartalfheim was all but dead in the Nine, the dark elves long defeated by his grandfather.
Thor swallowed and reached over to cup Jane’s cheek. “How?”
Jane blinked, smiled. “Easy. We’re going to manipulate the thin spots between the branches to get us there.” That was not the question Thor was asking.
“You would say that, because you don’t understand that we cannot go to these places.”
“Why do we need to go to these places, Jane?” He squashed down all the other questions that were burning in him. It would not do to ask them with Loki around, his own questions glinting in his eyes. His brother saw something in Jane’s notes that kept him interested enough not to betray them. That was enough to worry Thor, but that he warned Thor in his own way, was even more worrisome. Thankfully, Jane was not aware of what had just transpired between the brothers and answered his question.
“We know it’s not the Observatory, but somehow Asgard has been blocked off from it’s branch,” she stood and walked out the room, pulling out a holodisc and opening I need to understand’s Yggdrasil’s bones. Best way I can figure it is go to the sources.”
Loki rolled his eyes. “We would need the Observatory to get there.”
Jane raised an eyebrow. “You know that’s not true.”
Eyes glancing between them, Thor rested his hand on the curve of Jane’s shoulder and met his brother’s eyes. “What does she mean that’s not true? You know we cannot use the ships, Father decommission the shipyards and space decks centuries ago.”
Loki stepped back and spread his palms wide. “Oh you can’t expect me to reveal all my secrets right away, brother.”
“Loki…”
“At any rate, with our current status, we’ll be hard pressed to make it through. If your mortal” — “Hey, fuck you very much.” — “Is right… You must learn to let someone finish their sentence, Foster,” Loki continued with a mean grin, “the current state of the World Tree is unbalanced and all the thin spots are unstable. I could not in good faith, as is the deal I’ve struck with the Allfather, lead you to your doom. I’m fairly sure that it was by somehow manipulating a thin spot is what allowed her to arrive to Asgard in the first place.”
Thor sighed. Loki wanted something, of that he was sure. What he wanted was simple… freedom. Thor was sure of that too, but what troubled him was the way Loki would go about it, because freedom to Loki wasn’t being free of his shackles and his prison. It was something else that Thor didn’t understand.
His attention was pulled back to the matter at hand when Jane stood, his hand skimming down her shoulder as she moved. She walked across the room and opened a holodisc, letting an image of the distance Midgard and Asgard bloom. She touched Midgard and expanded it until it was the size of training shield. She made it spin and then slapped it down to the size of an apple, pulling up the star map of the Nine in relation to each other in space. An innumerable distance separated all nine world and yet on the tree they were all connected. As if she read his mind, she flipped the star map to showcase the World Tree.
“Yeah, I’ve thought about that too. It’s the only thing that makes sense, since there’s been no other contact from Earth since—“ Jane trailed off, her eyes going to the window. She thought of Midgard, Thor thought. “I must have somehow tapped into a thin spot, used my makeshift Bridge to push myself through the spot. I haven’t come up with anything else. Well, anything that makes sense.” She ran a finger through the pages of her notebook. Thor almost feared the idea she must have in there that didn’t make sense.
“You want to do it again. Try and manipulate a spot and cross the branches, find out why Asgard is blocked off.”
Jane looked at him and shrugged. “It worked once, didn’t it? I can do it again. I know more now.”
“You almost died.”
“But I didn’t, and you didn’t.”
Thor furrowed his brow. “What do you mean?”
“When you came to New York, you didn’t die.”
“That’s because I used…” Thor trailed off. Too the side, across from them, Loki sat in his favourite chair and did not smile, did not smirk, did not look up, did not do anything except flip a page in his text. All the muscles in Thor’s shoulders and neck prickled in awareness. He remembered picking up a snake once and having it stab it. Looking back to Jane, he moved so that he could hide her from Loki’s presence that suddenly felt venomous. Freedom, Thor thought, always had many names.
“Jane.”
She gazed up at him, her hands flattened against his chest. “I know, I know. Will you trust me?”
Cupping her face in his hands, Thor lowered his brow to hers. Jane met him halfway, pushing up to her toes, fingers curling into the collar of his breastplate. “Deal.”
“Deal.”
Without another look to Loki, Thor lead Jane out of the room. She took hooked her arm through his and pressed a kiss to his shoulder. It was a small comfort, the feeling of Jane steady at his side, because as Thor heard the doors close behind them, he felt them, the warsdrums of his dreams becoming louder.
.the well
“Oh, it’s—,” Verdhandi spoke up, blinking as if from a long rest.
Urdhr rolled their eye, “It already—.”
Laughing, Skuld slowly spun a silvery thread, thin as a spider’s web, into the well. “It will happen, you mean.”
thor: the dark world (2013) thor odinson, favourite scene
“i rather be a good man than a great king” LOOK AT THIS, i mean when you think about how thor 1 opened his character and how this movie closes it? LOOK AT THIS MIRROR PARALLEL? just look! the empty shadowed more private hall vs the bright full ceremonial one from thor 1. the humility, the understanding of who he is and wants to be, tried and tired and tested man vs the arrogant, cocky, boy still trying to find ways of proving himself great. i’m so proud, i’m so proud. ;_____; but now let me a fucking adult about it.
odin: the nine realms saw you fight for them. what can asgard offer it’s new king.
thor: my life. i will protect asgard and all the realms with my last and every breath but i cannot do so from that chair. loki, for all his grave imbalance, understood rule as i know i never will. the brutality, the sacrifice, it changes you.
first of, GIVING UP THE THRONE bc he does not feel worthy or ready for it. i mean, he never was gonna get it even if he did want it, bc that’s loki, but the point is thor doesn’t know that. he goes up to his father, his king and denounces the desire for the throne. and when odin (LOKI U SONABITCH) calls him out on it all “is that my son i hear or the woman he loves?” thor confidently answers back with “when you speak, do i never hear mother’s voice” which SICK BURN, but also he continues with, “this is not for jane. she does not know what i came here to say. now forbid me to see her or say she can rule at my side, it changes nothing.”
first, he totes wants to marry jane. secondly, thor has thought about this. thor looks at the throne and sees how it’s made his father act when he knows none can oppose him, how the want for it the need of its (really odin’s) validation corrupted loki even further, and he doesn’t want that. he wants to (try and) be better than a king who will use the power of the throne to throw their kingdom into war and chaos like odin almost did, like loki almost did. he wants to be able to protect the people he’s pledged to and be able to say he did it for them and not the throne.
he wants to live with honor. he wants to try and continue to be worthy of mjolnir. he wants to be able to be his own person without the burden of rule hanging over him, even though he never shrinks or decided to ignore his duty to asgard. it’s an incredibly humble scene in which, again, thor doesn’t look at power as something that is required to be a good person or a hero, but in which he gives up his power in order to do exactly that.
because thor is such a powerful figure, like literally, he’s a force of nature, that his core narratives are about how he reacts to power and how that feed into how his character develops. the lack of power (thor 1) and how he realises his worth without it, to how he reacts to immense power (thor 2) and how he sees the corruption of it, see the pull of it, how the duty of the throne would shackle him and put him in a position that he does not feel should be his to command from, but still the loyalty to asgard remains. so he CHOOSES to not follow the path set out for him. it looks like step back, the choice not to rule, but really it’s a step forward for him. being sent to earth has always been a punishment (thor 1) or duty (avengers assemble) before, but now he can finally go and it’s his choice. (this paragraph is mess, i’m sorry, my thoughts very winding.)
and the thing is you see this struggle from the beginning of the movie.
partially bc he’s pining for jane, but earlier when he confronts ACTUAL ODIN
about his decision to arrest jane and in this moment thor comes up with a risky, but safer plan for asgard in terms of dealing with malekeith and the aether, but odin in his anger and grief demands wars and battle. and straight out says that he’ll fight malekith even if it means asgard suffers under the burden of war. this the moment that thor a) showcases he would actually be a better king, b) sees how the power of the throne can cast and how it can influence a ruler c) that even if the you disagreed with you couldn’t argue your ruler unless you wanted to be called traitor d) he will still do what is needed to protect asgard even from it’s king
which leads to a great scene between thor and heimdall, all about this! and i adore the thor/heimdall relationship in this movie. they’ve really become friends and peers over these last two years in a way i feel they weren’t before.
thor has a great line here that highlights everything above: “the realms need their allfather strong and unchallenged whether he is or not.” and PPL CALL THOR STUPID. he’s not the natural politician that loki is but he’s GOOD, he understands the needs of the people and kingdom better than even he thinks of himself.
he even plans a DOUBLE JAIL BREAK OUT. full with heist movie narration! honestly thor 2 has a terrible plot, but there’s so many little good things that happen when you peel away everything that bogs it down. i didn’t even get to his secretly hilarious moment but let us remember space is fine and that’s not his cellphone ringing.

thor: the dark world (2013) favourite jane/thor scene.
oh this one has a backstory, for no particular reason other than why not.
bc look, this movie should have been called “thor: and jane keep getting cockblocked”. first they’re og plan to bang until arizona filed a complaint to the state of new mexico was interrupted bc well. loki wanted to destroy a world. fair. you gotta go save the world. but you can’t me that you don’t think that all thor wanted to do since that bifrost was fix was hop down to earth and well not to be crude, but go diving down under and make jane see stars YA KNOW. however he was still riding the guilt, which tbf he should have been a little, and stayed on and helped his kingdom and dad with keeping the peace in the nine realms. and then FIRST LEGIT EXCUSE he finds to head down to earth he takes and he was ready, jane was ready… (he’s basically ready to say the big l and so is jane but they’re trying to be chill. pls look below and witness their definition of chill.)
but cockblock one:
darcy, telling them they be getting arrest. fair, but also darcy, girl, spend a night in jail for your girl jane who is giving you free room and board in fucking london. and i’m sure jane’s phantom mom would have bailed you out.
then we have above cockblock two (not actually pictured but basically frigga shows up and well… thor loves his mom and jane is all flustered bc she was about to get super down and dirty with thor in front of his mom THE QUEEN. so it’s not like they can have a quickie in his rooms, but LOOK AT THEM THEY WERE THINKING ABOUT IT) but before frigga shows up we have this WONDERFUL MOMENT. which is actually the end of their day date on asgard, with my ACTUAL favourite jane(/thor) scene but oh ho ho ho it’s a deleted scene but who hates me more than kenny b, and kenny b actually loves me, ALAN TAYLOR. buddy why do you do this to me? did not watch the dailies? i’m not gonna get into this, right now.
anyway, this moment is just PURE ROMANCE and the hottest science talk i’ve ever seen. just thinking about it now i need a cigarette and i don’t even really smoke. like fuck thor practiced on how to say “convergence” and have it actually mean: “the minute we’re alone together i hope you’ve eaten recently bc calories are gonna be burning.” and jane is all for it. jane is listening to thor talk asgardian science shit, on a alien world, and it’s literally all her wildest fantasies come true. but here’s the thing about had the ball scene (the day date scene, more on it below!) + this scene been kept together, it would have showcased even FURTHER, though this scene does an okay job of it, of how well they balance each other. of how well they communicate and understand each other even they are not supposed to.
but first, thor has learned about convergence due to spending time with heimdall, because (headcanon time) he wanted to know and understand what jane studies, but also he wants to understand the nine realms and cosmos better. secondly, jane has been STUDYING convergence and doesn’t even know it. she needs the translation from asgardian to english explained but she actually knows what this all is. and thor explains it really well, with the bonus of the subtext of: convergence of the realms = us having sex bc we are from two different realms. THESE MULTITASKING ASSHOLE, THROWING EXPOSITION, INTELLIGENCE AFFIRMATION, AND SEXUAL TENSION AT ME. had they paired this with the ball scene you get more of jane’s side of this dynamic, on asgard anyway.
the ball scene, if you don’t know, and i say like anyone who has been reading these haven’t studied every jane/thor scene. this fandom is not that big, hi all 30 of you! it opens with jane studying some floating mechanical thing, she’s super excited about the propulsion and magnetic fields, and thor gently tells her she’s accidentally taken the ball of a bunch of kids. these kids who have just been chilling sad waiting for her to be done with it? these were really polite kids or they know this is the prince’s girlfriend they we can’t for their ball back, bobby! but when thor points it out to her, the moment is treated so well. that jane found wonder in a kid’s toy only makes him more endeared to her, bc he understands. and the text doesn’t treat jane silly for it either. both respect her interest and intellectual curiosity. and then thor probably makes a mental note to find his old ball from somewhere in his rooms. (probably after they bang… bc well, see above.)
but let’s not forget my favourite cockblock in this movie, bc yeah that cave was dirty but well, i believe in their need to make make out a little. it’s been a long day and jane just got her energy back. youknowwhatimean
gif credit @beheworthy
and thor’s MAGICAL “it’s not me”, HE’S SO RIDICULOUS AND SECRETLY FUNNY.
but the hilarity of the cockblocks aside, MY SECOND FAVOURITE MOMENT IN THE MOVIE IS WHAT THE WHOLE MOVIE COULD HAVE BEEN CENTRED ON.
THEM BEING BAD ASS TOGETHER. the final fight in the film is great bc it showcases how both them work together so well. science and magic! jane trusts in thor’s abilities to get her instruments in right position so she can flip the literal kill switch. so thor sets up that volley and
jane spikes that shit. (yes, visually it looks like thor’s spiking and jane’s volleying but trust me it’s the other way around.)
they send elf lord here packing.
and just bc it’s an important moment, i’d like to as always shout out to elsa for stepping in for this final rooftop kiss (since they apparently decided not to go with the one they actually filmed and put in the trailer - don’t ask me) bc i thought chris/nat kissed well, but man THERE’S NO ACTING IN THIS KISS
and it really lends to jane/thor and their ~pasión~ thanks guys
up next: nothing, i’m done. technically these all really only fit day two of fosterweek, but whatever. all my wips are wips and i got lazy about ps.
thor: the dark world (2013) jane foster, favourite scene
i mean, of course i chose this one. who do you think i am? i mean, first of all the movie unfortunately streamlines the amount of jane scenes by the nature of the plot that surrounds her, aether nap time. (but also gotta throw a shoutout to marvel for not thinking about their continuity with the infinity stones and accidentally making jane one badass human by being able to hold and contain the aether. woot, thanks guys.) so while jane gets a good amount of scenes in the movie a lot of the time esp in the middle act of the movie they are reactionary or nap time. what i loved about jane in thor 1 was how proactive she is! not was, IS! but this movie tempers that down A LOT. i love it but i also know it’s flaws. so in thor 2 jane is PASSIVELY reacting* vs ACTIVELY reacting/acting a lot more. where in thor 1 she was constantly in motion, doing shit, here she’s way more still. part of that is that is the aether, part of that is she’s a visitor in a new place, part of that is writing making her more passive, good or bad.
now, being passive in your reaction is not a bad thing! characters can passively react to thing going on around in plot around them and everything can be great, but it’s a question of how much agency and intention and portrayal in writing that colours it in a more positive or negative light. i, for one, am 66% fine with the choices on how jane was written due to the circumstances that surround her in this movie. but there are moment i just SIGH, wish patty or any other female director, writer, producer would have kicked marvel, fiege, and taylor in the butt.
however in this scene we see her on asgard, and well, she’s not asleep, so a win, or has just passed out, double win. she’s being examined and she’s so ACTIVELY interested in what’s happening around her. i think in part jane doesn’t completely understand how dangerous the aether is rn. she’s still cautious about it, but she’s on asgard! life is awesome!!! and ooh fuck that’s quantum field generator. no it’s not, they tell her. but she just giddly asks about what the mechanics of the soul forge is and hey, she’s right! it is a quantum field generator!
jane’s innate understand of technology that is “supposed” to be too advance for her is such a delightful moment for everyone involved. from jane, who is giddy in her experience of asgard tech, to eir, who pauses and shows surprise and respect to her for understanding, to thor, who is just like WOW SHE’S SO PRETTY AND SMART (pLS BE OKAY!!!) and it’s so great that that not only jane is right but the people around her, even the ones who doubted her, enjoy and bask in that moment of someone knowing and understanding. jane’s fucking smart as shit and at the very least thor 2 keeps on celebrating her intellect and joy of learning. another great scene about this is the ball scene! which actually a reblog somewhere has some great meta attached it about how pure her reaction is and how (again!) great thor was about jane’s interest in asgard tech. alsoooooo the archives scene in which we see jane pick up the archiving system very quickly and she says “when i don’t know what to do i work”. a scene i kinda wish they had kept in bc it’s another instance in which jane is DOING SHIT.
but back to this scene bc if you notice i didn’t stop at after thor’s smile where usually this scene “ends”, i put in the odin bits too. why? bc while yes, odin is incredibly rude to jane in the scene, she doesn’t take it for a second.
THE MINUTE he says his shit she reacts strongly and forcefully with “who the hell do you think you are? (calling me fucking livestock!)” when he reveals he’s odin, she’s taken aback, but she doesn’t apologise. bc she doesn’t need to! he was fucking dick. what she does is pull her shoulder back, look a little awkward and starts introducing herself. he cuts her off, bc again: dick, but she flips his “i know who you are” to a very cute moment with thor.
but it showcases who jane is even when aspects of her are tempered down. she’s clever, she’s impulsive, esp in her reactions when being insulted (see: my thor 1 fave scene), and she’s incredibly endearing because of these traits.
the the final act is great for her too. it’s why i will always super love this movie no matter what: SCIENCE AND MAGIC SAVING THE DAY, FIGURING OUT HOW TO SAVE THE DAY.
thor scenes in this movie are actually quiet hard to pick out bc well, his growth is slightly intense. he goes from cocksure warrior prince to a kinder, wiser, man who understand to protect isn’t only to fight and learns to value the life of other above the glory of a battle. he retains that confidence, humour, and swagger, but he grows so wonderfully. some of my favourite moments before this growth are the wink he gives his mom, the headbutt with the frost giant, the moment sif corrects him and he’s like yeah you right, when he kisses jane’s hand, when he slips into shield, bc that shows of his competence in an undercover situation. after the moment with mjolnir and his inability to lift, some of his best moments are: the roof top scene, sharing his knowledge with jane, making breakfast, and obviously above.
now my choice is the obvious moment. it’s his big hero moment, where he chooses to stand up against the destroyer.
but the moment he stands up is important bc he DOESN’T FIGHT. not because he’s mortal, but because he’s wants to protect those around him, this town and it’s people, darcy and erik, and jane, who took him in, who believed in him, who trusted him and stood by him. these people who had no reason to do anything for him, but yet did. and more so he apologised to loki while doing it, because he knows that somehow he’s done something to hurt his brother and he wants to stop his brother’s pain as well. so he walks up and chooses to essentially die so everyone he cares about can live. he even drops the shield he picked up from sif. there’s nothing to protect him from whatever the destroyer and loki choose to do. it’s about selflessness, sacrifice, protection, compassion, and understanding.
the scene also makes him look small in several moments, zooming in when he’s apologising to loki and telling jane she’s safe. in previous fights thor takes up the whole screen, he commands it, here he’s almost lost in certain instances.
bc it’s the most recent superhero movie out, i think of wonder woman, and how one of her final defining moments is choosing love and compassion to defeat ares. this is a very similar moment. but this is also his no man’s land, his steve breaking into the prison in the first avenger. clark going up to the spaceship and face zod. (there’s another fight after between him and loki, which is about so many other things so i’m not getting into it.) the hero moment where he becomes the hero he’s meant to be. the fight after is his fight battle post this growth, but in this moment the boy, as lafeuy called him earlier, becomes a man and a good man at that. interestingly thor big hero moment is a passive one. something that makes perfect sense for him bc thor doesn’t need another fight to tell him he’s awesome he’s worthy. even he had been standing up to the destroyer by fighting it, which he does when he comes back to life, it would have undermined his growth in valuing the lives of other above his own glory.
now to a small but personally heartbreaking moment:
“can i go home?” BREAK MY HEART, YOU GIANT. you obviously can’t hear it but chris goes so much younger with thor’s voice here. you see how young he is, (thor in this movie is basically in his 20s in asgardian years) when you think about it in asgardian years, you see how broken he is and how vulnerable he is. also important: how vulnerable he lets loki see him. he’s failed, he’s been beaten, and all he wants to do is go home. and
he can’t. then: HE APOLOGISES TO LOKI FOR EVERYTHING. excuse you have something your eye. let’s quickly lighten this up with: THE COMEDY GOLD EVERYONE FORGETS THOR IS.
THESE SLICK PICKPOCKETING SKILLS. stealing jane’s book back for her, because if he can do something to help her he will.
the hey, you wanna work together give the bae back her work scene:
and a shoutout to my actual fav thor scene in this movie with is a deleted scene: WHEN HE GOES BACK TO THE CAFE AND REPLACES THE MUG HE BROKE and then asks for permission to go back kenny b why!!!
get you a man that can do both… all four. and jane did. get it girl.
LOOK AT HIS GROWTH! but really, i understand why the movie happens in the span of time it does, but it really could have done with having thor’s time on earth be extended. maybe a montage, but with the focus on asgard and it’s shakespearean politics kenny b loves we don’t get to see as much of thor’s time on earth as was probably needed.
next up: my fave thor 2 jane moment, my face thor 2 thor moment, my fave thor 2 ship moment. i’m thorough.
there’s actually another scene that is much more subtle and i’ll post it below that highlights some of my favourite things about them, and then there’s the classic roof top scene which is lovely beyond words and is a strong contender for favourite scene, but i just really enjoy so much of what’s going on here. it’s early in their acquaintance. they’re learning about each other but there’s already such an easy rapport. jane is babbling about how what they’re doing is crazy and she’s never done something like it before, and thor tells her he has. not even really boasting, just a fact. she’ll be okay. they have no reason to trust each other in this moment, but they do. they talk about the bridge, about who he is, and in their flirting they almost run off the road, but laugh and keep going. they both a mission and in this moment they’re each other partners and ally. it’s such a nice scene setting up their relationship already.
and then i can’t help but mention the desert background of them literally DRIVING OFF INTO THE SUNSET NOT EVEN HALF WAY THROUGH THE FILM. plus the camera keeps them both equally in the shots. you can always see both except for two beats towards the end where the camera pulls in tighter when thor is struggling with the answer of who he is now and when jane outwardly hopes he’s not crazy, a moment of struggle for herself.
and now SOME OF MY OTHER MINI FAVE SCENE (the roof scene is too big to count):
i just love this moment. their little mermaid moment. she’s literally the first thing he sees as he wakes. the script has an directional note that goes “they lock eyes, they are both breathless in that moment” or something like. interestingly, jane is bathed in the blue light alluding more heavily to the ocean even though he’s the outsider to her world. but the whole point of the little mermaid is that ariel wants to be part of man’s world and better understand it, and jane wants to better understand space/thor’s world. so maybe kenny b knew what he was doing.
you can’t SEE SHIT here, but trust me it’s great. he gives her his jacket and tell her to wait for him because he’s gonna go in there, get his hammer, get her shit, and they’re gonna fly out of there. she’s like WTF and it’s a delightful moment.
OH AND THIS DELIGHTFUL ROMCOM OF A MOMENT: THE AWKWARD TRAILER FLIRTING. guys, stop me.
next up: my fave thor moment. my fave thor 2 jane moment, my face thor 2 thor moment, my fave thor 2 ship moment. i’m thorough.
the favourite scene day was yesterday but fuck it. so this is my fave scene for jane in (thor 2011). it speaks so much to her character and her tenacity. she’s ready to go 10 rounds with shield and coulson to get stuff back. she a little whirlwind of motion, anger, and frustration because she’s smart enough to know she probably won’t stop them from taking her stuff, but that’s not gonna stop her.
i couldn’t catch it in the caps, bc like i said: mini whirlwind of righteous fury, but not once but twice erik has to literally hold her back. she gets up in coulson’s face, she pushes against shield agents and she does it without blinking. jane brilliant but she is wonderfully reckless with herself in the pursuit of science. her opening scene literally includes her driving into a crazy atmospheric phenomenon bc of science! later she runs straight at thor in the midst of mostly finished but still dangerous battle field. and in her frustration from this scene above fuels her to follow thor, a stranger spouting wild shit and promises of answers, bc FUCK SHIELD that’s her shit, that’s her research out there! (jane foster knew before everyone else: FUCK SHIELD, Y’ALL DIRTY BASTARDS. well not all, but you get my drift.)
weirdly, that trait is one thor shares. i mean, the whole plot of thor 1 is a direct response to thor running into a situation impulsively, but also:
we all know what happens there. (if you don’t: he headbutts the frost giant behind him for making fun of him RUINING the easy out loki just gave them) and makes them so delightful to see together on screen later in this movie and thor 2, you know the moments she isn’t napping. they have that same impulsive nature, they go head and heart first into a situation. thor actually tempers himself more than tbh as he grows.
ETA: JUST CAPPED IT. THIS GREAT MOMENT OF JANE CALLING ERIK TO LET HER KNOW SHE MIGHT GET ARRESTED BC SHE’S HELPING THOR.
next up: my fave thor moment, my fave ship moment. my fave thor 2 jane moment, my face thor 2 thor moment, my fave thor 2 ship moment. i’m thorough.

now i’m thinking about how WELL thor understands ppl and personalities, just naturally…. like it’s 100% bc of frigga who was shown to have deep empathy and understanding and thor is very much his mother’s son. but also he’s so open with affection, emotional and physical, but he also how holds himself around ppl until he’s become good enough friends with them that he knows he can be as affectionate as he wants. but also with people he’s just met he’s respectful and read them so well that he understand what levels of physical contact they’d be comfortable with.
like when he first mets jane and they’re both studying each other, he never really crowds into her space and overwhelms her. if anything he lets her crowd into his space and crowd him
and in part that’s because he knows he’s not in any danger from her, but even more so because of that he holds himself carefully around her. same later in the trailer after he drops erik off, erik who he was also very careful with, but then the breakout from shield happen and drinking happen and thor understood then–okay i’m allow certain levels of contact with this person bc of the situation at hand. but when he goes back to trailer, after he lays erik down, the way HE STANDS IN THE TINY TRAILER IS SO SOFT AND AWKWARD.
he’s in jane’s personal space now!! he’s a guest here!!! he allows her to guide the entire interaction and then they go up to the roof, which is the moment their relationship really changes. the only time he actually makes an action that jane wasn’t completely aware was going to happen is right before he breaks into shield and takes of his jacket to cover her from the rain.
(THIS CAP IS THE WORST, I KNOW BUT TRUST ME MY POINT IS MADE)
which in that of itself is an action he’s taken again, not to impose his presence onto her, but offer protection. and when jane questions him as he does it, he EXPLAINS IT TO HER. she doesn’t under the explanation bc lol god of thunder magic.
FINALLY, AFTER ALL THAT they’re so physically comfortable with each other immediately. THEY MAKE BREAKFAST TOGETHER. THEY FLY TOGETHER.
their physicality is so good during so much of this movie. from studying each other, to interested, to awkward learning, to completely comfortable. and for so much of that thor is not the instigator of any of these things. he follows jane’s lead, never pushing her.
with others (warrior 3, loki, sif) you see thor be completely comfortable touching them. he hugs his friends, he comforts sif. he reaches for loki, he’d probably hug loki, if loki would let him.
(AND THIS IS SHOWCASED IN THOR 3, when thor says he’d hug loki if loki was around and he was. but also thor knows his brother and probably would have asked anyway or very much telegraphed the movement. thor only like to physically surprise people in battle, and even then, he really doesn’t? YOU KNOW HE’S COMING.) with the avengers he’s friendly but not very physically affectionate, expect later with bruce, which again, MAKES SENSE. the closest person i’ve seen him be physically attune to beside bruce is steve. in avengers one when tony punches him the arm, he accepts it, but he never does the same back to tony. bc tony, like jane, only allows certain people into his physical circle. if thor knew tony would okay with shit like that, he’d probably do it. ditto with natasha. and with darcy he let her pretty much treat him like a puppy, bc iN REALITY darcy is the puppy to him. she’s smol and active and she’s more comfortable poking and prodding him, and he’s open to it. she’d probably welcome a hug easily, but he’s lets her initiate all action, and so far her actions are playful but distant.
then in thor 2 it’s COMPLETELY DIFFERENT for thor and jane. they KNOW each other. they know they want to get it on with each other :p. the only moment of hesitancy is at the very beginning bc it’s been 2 years and even then they’re like STRUGGLING not to get closer. after that, they can’t stop fucking touching. IT’S MAGNIFICENT.
thor is always reaching for jane, and jane always welcomes it. bc thor is the more tactile of the two in terms of personal relationships and understands that, he knows he’s welcome so he doesn’t check himself. jane’s interest in touching thing leans more into her work. the scene where she reached up to touch the particles of the soul forge, the deleted scene where she’s using her hands to go through the archives. she only really invites thor, erik, and darcy into her personal space.
THOR IS ALWAYS REACHING FOR JANE (HUMANITY, GOODNESS, LOVE), JANE IS ALWAYS REACH FOR SCIENCE, MAGIC, UNDERSTANDING (THOR)!!!! THE THEMES OF THIS RELATIONSHIP ARE SO BALANCED OK.
(i don’t have caps for thor 3 or IW oops)
then in thor 3, you still see this with thor and bruce, hulk, and valkyrie. he never pushes himself on any of them, except the hulk, but only when the hulk is throwing back down. (this is of course another thing, thor in battle mode or fighting, is very different in terms of physicality than when he’s not. this goes for everyone too.) otherwise he’s so patient and comfortable with hulk, and that allows hulk to become more comfortable with him. he doesn’t treat hulk like an aspect of bruce, but a full form being. THAT’S WHY HULK ACCEPTS HIM AND VALKYRIE. they treat him like he’s one of them!!! he’s not something to be managed. and thor’s always gentle with bruce, using familiar actions and phrases to make him comfortable. and once bruce is comfortable: they’re so chill with each other. after, when he understands valkyrie’s past and trauma, he lets valkyrie get comfortable with him before he even tries to form a real emotional or physical connection. the first time he tries to appeal to her she rebuffs him and HE ABSOLUTELY respects her action in pushing back and drawing her dagger at him. he immediately stiffens but doesn’t defend himself further. doesn’t try to push her. he doesn’t even ask for her help again, only accepts her help when she offers it.
as for loki, he always treats loki with warmth (and annoyance, SIBLING LIFE!) but only allows himself to show real deep physical affection when loki alludes that he’d welcome it (faking his death!, catching the ball). they have the most back and forth relationship in the movie in terms of levels of affection. they’re silly with each other, tense with each other, and finally open with each other at the end.
then in IW, with gamora, rocket, and peter dinklege (I FORGOT HIS NAME OK). again, he OFFER COMFORT AND UNDERSTANDING first verbally, then very small bits of physical comfort (mostly just a hand on a shoulder or a gentle word) before taking it himself. he knows these people are not comfortable with him and they’re experiencing some pain and so he doesn’t impose HIS PAIN over their. he lets their take as much space as his and give them the space to express it. he always waits and allows for them to consent and accept his physical affections/attentions and from there he allows the relationship, romantic, platonic, friendly, whatever to develop at a pace that the person in question is comfortable with.

They are writhing and dying and burning.
They are not here to be pretty.

She didn’t like it. Loki being out of his prison. Despite having argued for it, Jane now looked at Thor’s face as he got ready to face his father about Loki’s release.
It wasn’t her place to say anything… she hadn’t already said. She understood just how tense this was making him, but also because she knew he was doing this in part for her work and research. She wished it didn’t have to be this way, but Loki understood and travelled the ways of Yggdrasil’s system that she couldn’t parse yet.
As they stood at the threshold of her room, she reached up and touched Thor’s cheek, bringing his attention back down to her. He blinked and smiled at her.
“I’m sorry,” they both said at the same time and laughed.
Jane shook her head, sliding her finger to his lips so she could speak first. “I’m sorry we have to do this. I’m sorry I’m the reason we’re doing this.”
Thor’s smile thinned under her fingers and then he pressed a kiss to her fingertips as he held it to his cheek. He reached around her and pulled her in close. He lowered his forehead to touch hers. Jane felt her worries lessen under his warmth and strength. She spread her fingers against his beard.
“I am sorry too, Jane. I did not want you to be forced to have to deal with my brother. I’d rather this entire situation be simpler than it is.” He sighed against her. Jane tried to wrap her arms around him best she could.
“We would be us if we did things the simple way, would we?” she said, softly.
Thor’s mouth softened into a smile she kissed lightly. “No, we would not, beloved.”
As they separated they kept their hands intertwined and walked out the room together. The private smile Thor flashed her as they left, soothing the tension in her heart. (Leaves burning flashed in her mind regardless.)
.compromises
“He will be bound when he is not in the room, and the room will have the same barrier as the cells. As will his quarters.”
Thor nodded at his father’s terms for Loki’s freedom. He would have asked for no less. With Loki free now and Jane in Asgard, he would do nothing to ensure her safety from his brother. “I would also ask for extra guards to be posted at the doors.”
His father looked at him, assessing. “It is strange to me, son, that you would allow your brother near Lady Foster if you are so worried he would hurt her.”
Thor swallowed. “Loki knows better than to harm Jane. He understands that she is the only reason he is receiving this temporary reprieve in his sentence, but my brother is clever.”
“Do you believe he is aiming for escape?”
Thor considered telling his father his suspicions. Decided to share only what he was sure of at the moment. “I believe Loki will have more freedoms tomorrow than he has now. And he will have more freedoms the day after than he will have tomorrow.”
“And will you remember who it is he has to thank for that?” His father said. Thor did not like the phrasing of the truth of the answer his father was for. He did not like it because the truth was a name and it played into the suspicions his father already held, but Thor knew them to be false.
But the truth was a complicated thing, as Thor knew.
He bowed to his father, his king. “Loki would not thank anyone but his own self and his own machinations.”
“You speak a truth, son. But only one. Do not lose sight of the others.”
Thor nodded. “I have not, father.”
“Then I will see you tomorrow at your brother’s cell.”
-
And so shadow was released again, Thor thought as he watched Loki walk through the barriers of his cage. Immediately his hand were clasped in the heavy magic dampening manacles Thor brought up from the smiths. They were thick and covered Loki’s thin wrists and wiry forearms. Thor remembered the mask he had to clasp around Loki’s face back on Midgard after the battle. His side had ached still from the wound Loki had inflicted. The fleshed barely knitted together as he covered Loki’s face and wrist with similar bounds as the one they used today.
Next to him Jane stood silent and watchful. He had told her what the manacles would do and how his father had agreed to allow Loki’s aide in their quest to return stability to Yggdrasil.
“You have been given a reprieve,” his father spoke, his eyes on Loki. “Should you be able to help Thor in this task, I, Odin Allfather, will consider amending the sentence for the crimes you have committed against the Nine.” His father turned to Thor, Jane, and his mother who stood by them; the nearest to Loki. “All in this room have born witness to my decree should it come to pass.”
Loki’s gaze flitted over them all in complete disinterest except when he locked eyes with their mother. It was only then his gaze softened for a beat.
“As always, so just and fair is the Allfather when eyes are upon him. I do not want your pardon or pity. I shall do what was asked of me because it seem you all seem lost without me,” he smirked at Jane, and Thor felt her hand squeeze his. Her nails dug into his skin a little. It was their pre agreed upon signal so she would not strike Loki. “And I have read all the text I had.”
Before anyone else could respond their mother walked forward and cupped Loki’s cheek, stalling his sharp words. “I am glad I can bare witness to this, son. And there is no pity in these eyes, only gratitude to my lord husband and only love that my sons once more work together.”
At their mother’s words Loki’s aggrieved tension seem to lessen and he looked around the room again. This time he inclined the smallest degree. “Then, brother, seeker, let us get on with farce of a truce.”
Thor bristled but stayed his words. Jane scoffed softly. This time Thor squeezed her hand. It seemed Loki was looking to be pushing all the buttons he could. To what end, Thor was sure it wasn’t the same he was thinking of.
-
As the entered the room, Thor noticed the pause in Loki’s step at the threshold. Small, barely noticeable, but he still knew parts of his brother. Or so he hoped. Loki’s pause was a beat and breath and then he looked around the room, once theirs, now Jane’s with something between boredom and contempt.
“Interesting redecoration,” he said, waving his hand to the mirrors. He levelled his gaze on Jane and smirked. Thor didn’t know the words were about to leave Loki, but he had a feeling they would be complimentary. “Why don’t you just use the holos? They’d hold more,” he walked near on of the mirrors, his face was reflected behind Jane’s writings, “data. Or can’t you use them?” Next to him, Jane stiffened.
“I know how to use them,” she bit out. “I like the mirrors.”
“Hmm.”
Loki walked around the room lazily. His boots skimmed the notes Jane still had spiralled on the floor. His fingers skimmed of the ledgers and texts on the table. When he touched on the mirrors, Jane inched forward.
He was a predator, Thor thought, a predator testing his new surroundings, but they let him look, let him test.
“Well? Got anything to say, or are you just going to stare?” Jane fisted her hands at her waist.
Across the room, Loki turned and for the first time since he left his prison met Thor and Jane’s gaze. “It’s very interesting work. Rudimentary, but interesting.” Thor did not imagine Jane’s soft growl. He skimmed his hand down her back.
Jane stalked to the table and grabbed one of the holos. She tossed it to Loki, who was caught by surprise. His still bound hands closed over the holodisk only a second before it hit his nose. Thor bit back a grin. Behind him, he heard Fandral snort.
Sif and the Warriors Three were standing near. They were also watching Loki. Thor was glad of it, as much as he hated the need for it.
“Maybe you’d like to see if there’s anything interesting in there,” Jane said, her tone overly bright. “Let me know if you can make sense of it, I have to check some other things.” She stalked away and grabbed an armful of scroll and text and moved to table opposite one of the less marked up mirrors and flipped her journal open.
“And here I thought we’ve be working together, Doctor,” Loki sneered. He turned towards Thor. “Do you mind?” He lifted his bound hands. Thor shared a look with Sif, who squared her shoulders and nodded. Thor walked to his brother and with a glared he unbound Loki. Loki stared t him for beat, something simmering in his eyes Thor could not read. He did not thank Thor.
Jane looked up from her paper with narrowed eyes then. “And I hear I thought you might actually be helpful, but if you’re just gonna snark at me I’m sure your dad would be fine grounding you again.”
Thor winced at Jane’s words for they were harsh and true and he feared Loki’s response. Sif, quicker than him, had already moved up to Jane’s side.
“You insolent—” Loki’s eyes flashed, moving from Jane to Sif and back again. Thor gripped Mjölnir tightly.
Loki turned to him and sighed. “Fine, let’s see what this mortal has managed.” He switched the disk open and flicked through it disinterestedly for about ten-seconds before his eyes narrowed and he pulled a chair towards him, sitting down. He kept his face blank, but Thor knew his brother. Or at least he remembered this look on his brother’s face. He was more than intrigued, he was being challenged and one trait they had always shared was neither liked backing down from a challenge.
Looking over to Jane, Thor met her gaze and gave a small smile and nod. Her shoulders relaxed and the tension left her face. Near her Sif’s hand moved away from her sword. Thor nodded to her and she stepped back, calling the Warriors Three to her.
They all had instructions not leave Jane alone with Loki, but they all had their own duties for the realm as well.
Thor would his stay with Jane and his brother for now.
As Sif and Warriors Three left, Thor called for Fulla to bring them some beverages. He then moved to sit on one of the sofa’s and pulled his own to him. He had missives and plans to look over as the state of Asgard remained under threat. Giving one quick look to Jane, he smiled as he found her already elbow deep in her notes, her hand moving quickly across the pages. He glanced at Loki, flipping through the holo data quickly. Thor noticed he had also conjured a journal as well and made his own notes.
For a brief moment Thor imagined a happier world where the circumstance of this scene weren’t so dire. He also had an even briefer flash of hope that that world could still happen.
.alliances
“Look, it’s clearly a question of figuring out what exactly is happening within the Bifrost and Yggdrasil that’s not allowing the connection the Observatory makes to maintain itself.”
Jane paced around the table, flipping through the hologram hovering over it every few minutes trying to rethink her calculations. The image of the Observatory and the World Tree glowed softly in the growing dusk. Loki snorted from the other side of the table. Thor, looked up at him, but at this point he seemed to have gotten used to Loki’s annoying asides.
“What you don’t understand, ant, is that the Observatory makes the Bifrost, it shouldn’t be affected by anything within Nine Worlds. The system just does not work that way.” Loki said, even though he was flipping through some of her notes. He idly made his own notes. Earlier he had tried mocking her until he realised she could understand a fair amount of the runes. He had looked at Thor then, something passing between the brothers that Jane didn’t understand.
It hadn’t been until that moment that she had really understood that they were truly brothers. She knew because the myths stated it, Frigga spoke of them as such, Thor still named Loki as such, but they were all words. All of them secondary facts. Even when they interacted before there had been a strong tension between them, but in that moment as Loki looked in surprise at her understanding of the runes and Thor met his eyes, she had glimpsed the centuries of brotherhood between them.
They had exchanged an understanding in that moment that picked at her, though she was not sure why. And then Loki questioned her hypothesis.
“Tell that to the Bifrost! The Observatory is in perfect working order according to ever single sage and scientist in this place! The crystal of the bridge was completely rebuilt. It starts up and spins. The star maps and magics chiselled into the gold are fine, so the only viable reason why it’s not connecting is that something else within the system is blocking the connection.” She stated, again, because it seem Loki couldn’t get past that simple premise.
“And I’m telling you that’s not how it the Bifrost operates.” He said, again.
“What if it’s not the fucking Bifrost!”
Loki paused. “The Nine Worlds don’t work that way either.”
Jane was about to throw a book at him. She actually reached out to grab one, expect Thor interjected then. His voice was quite and measured. Jane turned her head to where he sat. He was looking at her and Loki, his eyes on his brother. Something like hurt shinning in them. Not for the first time today, Jane hated her work was causing this.
“Then how have you travelled between realms without Heimdall’s notice. How did you get the jotunn in that day?”
Loki froze. He stopped twirling the writing stylus in his hand. (She didn’t want to admit it, but watching him work it really had helped in her understanding of it.) He slid his annoyed gaze from Jane to Thor. His eyes grew colder, harder. Jane wanted to step in between them. Anything to stop that coldness from reaching Thor.
She stepped forward.
Loki’s eyes snapped at her and when he answered he looked away from both Thor and Jane. “The thin spots between realms are an anomaly, nothing that should affect the Yggdrasil’s system…”
His voice trailed of at the end as if in thought.
Jane’s mind locked on to one thing, however.
“What thin spots?”
Loki looked back at her as if he had forgotten she was there. Jane had feeling he probably did. He pursed his lips and Jane wondered if he was gonna be a little shit about this too, but then, to the surprise of everyone in the room he answered her.
“Your theory about the World Tree is relatively accurate, for the understanding of a mortal,” Loki said. Jane rolled her eyes. “Despite there being a million worlds out there, the Nine Realms are connected in a a way that they are not with other worlds. It makes it marginally easier to travel between them without the help of something like the Bifrost or a space ship.”
“Yes, Hiemdall explained this to me.” Jane said, but she still couldn’t help but flip open a new page in her journal. “In the early days of Asgard before they adapted the Bifrost to go across the universe they could only use it to travel within the World Tree system.”
Loki nodded. “Yes, that’s the story they tell. We like to use a bit more flourish, however.” To prove his point he waves his hand and from them sprouted hologram of the world tree. It was smaller than the one in the archives. Jane looked at Thor as Loki did this and watched him bite back a smile. She did have to admit that was impressive.
“Okay, go on.” Jane moved to sit by Thor, propping her journal on her lap. He slipped his arm around her shoulder and she could feel him relax now that she was next to him.
He was still very tense having her and Loki share the same space.
Jane reached up and threaded their fingers together and took notes with her other hand.
“As you appear to know,” Loki started, with an annoyed bite in his tone, “this is Yggdrissl system. It’s stable for the most part, but there are places within it that realms overlap. Those are the thin spots. If you know how to find them to can use them to move across realms without the aid of the Bifrost or large ships. Most have been forgotten but they do exist.” The image he conjured turned from a 3-D model of the World Tree into a flat representation of circles spinning around each other, occasionally skimming and overlapping. A floating Venn Diagram of space. Asgard, Jotunnheim, and Earth seemed to always been touching somehow while the others left their orbit completely at times. “Normally they are very hard to find, except for when the Nine fully overlap…”
“Ah, you mean Convergence!” Thor said.
Loki looked at Thor like his brother had stepped on his toes. “Yes…”
Jane turned to Thor, “What’s Convergence?”
Thor smiled at Jane, untwining their fingers and turning his palm. “Convergence is an occurrence between the realms when, for brief period of time, are sync with each other and their boundaries overlap.” He turned his palm again so that their fingers matched up once more. Jane smiled. Then she thought about something Heimdall had mentioned.
“Huh, and when does that happen?”
“Every five thousand years or so, but,” Loki and Thor looked at each other, something passing between them, and then Loki turned away and flipped through some book Jane had scattered on the table. “Well, it seems your not as dumb as you look, Foster. The next Coverngernce happens in a few months.”
Jane tilted her head and bit her lip, slipping from Thor’s side and wandered over to the table, plucking the book from Loki’s hand. She missed the way Thor tensed at her action and how Loki blinked down at her. “Months… months… months… months….” She looked up at Thor. “Asgard months or Earth months?”
Thor eyed her, carefully. “Asgardian months.”
“Huh, months… months…” Jane mumbled, eyes skimming over the book. Months was long time, but she could work with months. However, as she read the runes, and Loki’s words of pre-existing thin spots rolled around in her head, she had a thought.
She walked over to one of the mirrors and wiped away a corner of her notes. She plucked the ink she used to write on them, dipping her finger into the small ink well, forgetting to use the wax sticks she normally used. Quickly, she tried to put her thought into order on the mirror.
Behind her, in the reflection, she glimpsed Thor’s furrowed brow and Loki’s curious gaze. She turned over shoulder and smiled at Thor.
“I think… I have an idea, and we might not even need months.”
Thor was still looking at her, Loki looking beyond her shoulder at the marks she’d just made.
