It's in a 1910s to 1930s type society. There are 8 god/desses. At age 5, children are tested to see what god represents them. The only problem is that gender norms in this society are very strict. so strict that if a boy is represented by a goddess or a girl is represented by a god, they are not allowed to get married or be hired and all direct family gets their pay cut in half (parents, children, siblings, spouse). there are 4 goddesses (Maelyn (family, medicine), Solvia (education, memory), Ylvaine (art, beauty), Eiru (emotion, dreams)) and 4 gods (Varkun (strength, endurance), Jornev (strategy, math), Keldar (invention, mechanics), Astril (courage, ambition)). each god/dess has a color assigned to it that everyone will wear throughout their entire lives and it dictates what field they will go into and even how they're taught (Maelyn: peach (nurse or housewife), Solvia: yellow (teacher or librarian), Ylvaine: lavender (creator of home decor or clothes), Eiru: light blue (psychiatrist or therapist), Varkun: gray (athlete, builder), Jornev: navy blue (architect, physics, army related), Keldar: copper (architect, sciences), Astril: red (any job that requires you to have a sense of self preservation in the negatives). They can also get “stripes”, where a white stripe is physically painted onto their bow when they go against their assigned god or goddess. Most people only get 2 or 3 in their entire lifetime, but Veyla has 4 before age 18.
