Twerking is a dance invented and perfected by Black people. It is meant to show off the buttocks, an area where Black girls have us white girls beat. By twerking, white girls are not only paying tribute to Black culture, we’re also implicitly asked to be judged by Black beauty standards.

For generations, Black girls have had to conform to white beauty standards - straight hair, pale skin, skinny body. We’re seeing a reversal in this area, and that’s a good thing. White girls are trying to emulate Black beauty standards, and not just in the booty department. Just consider American singer Ariana Grande’s transformation from pale dye-job-redhead to exotic R&D star.

Rap is another art form invented and perfected by Black people and is associated with a male-dominated culture, with women relegated as backup dancers.

White girls twerking to rap music is the epitome of Cultural Africanization. Adopting Black culture and trying to emulate Black beauty standards in a hyper-sexualized and male-dominated context.

Or they should be. As this 2014 op-ed from The Guardian points out, whites are unfairly celebrated for adopting styles that were (and are) considered tacky and low-class when worn by Blacks.

For that reason, Cultural Africanization shouldn’t be restricted to aping aesthetics. Cranking up the rap beats or consuming other forms of Black culture is a good next step.

But why stop there? Read books and articles by Black authors, writing about Black issues. Like The Underground Railroad, a 2016 alternate history novel about slaves making a bid for freedom, by African-American writer Colson Whitehead. Or The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley (Haley was an African-American who also wrote Roots).

Show humility and let their perspective seep into your way at looking at the world.
