In fact, I enjoy just about every sci-fi TV show from Trek until around Farscape. I even like Earth: Final Conflict, which might make me unique. I enjoy Star Trek: The Animated Series *unironically.* If it's got spaceships and it's pre-broadband, I will binge it with you on request.

But here lately I've been wondering why. I'm not a snob but I engage critically with the media I consume, which amounts to the same thing to most people. If these shows were any other genre, I would write them off immediately. Star Trek: TAS frequently looks like the worst junk ever churned out of the Hanna-Barbera studios, Shatner can't be bothered to emote half the time and even Nimoy struggles to not sound sleepy. The series is rescued by an exceptional collection of writers, including godmother of Trek DC Fontana as well as sci-fi luminary Larry Niven; and by most of the original cast returning to voice themselves, especially James Doohan and Majel Barret, both of whom perform countless incidental characters in addition to their original characters. Doohan in particular is firing on all cylinders, playing over 50 characters over the course of the series. To illustrate, this is from his Behind The Voice Actor's page regarding TAS.

And Earth: Final Conflict is so turgid that it can barely move and rarely does. But I would still watch it 100 times before I'd watch [insert popular contemporary show here]. And I wonder why that is.
