How to write a kickass paper/essay
Because sooner or later, you will have to do it. You wonât get through high school and/or college without doing it. Hereâs how to get a good grade on the first try.
1. This isnât the same thing as writing a story. In fiction writing, bending grammar rules and stuffy writing conventions is okay. In academic writing, itâs not. Get the facts across first and worry about character later. Academic writing is kind of boring, I know. Act like you know what youâre talking about. Donât abuse the thesaurus until you sound like a post from r/iamverysmart, but try to sound educated.
2. Pick a specific topic. One of my essays from high school was a comparison of youth activism against violence, in the 1960s versus the 2010s. Ridiculously specific? Not ridiculously. If you pick a topic thatâs too broad, youâll end up pulling your brain every which way and overwhelming yourself. You might have some hits and misses with this, but itâs an important part of writing. Going over the word limit is just as annoying to your teacher as going under.
3. MELELEC. My 11th-grade English teacher taught me this little trick and I use it as a mainstay for writing. Itâs helped me ace assignments and win scholarships. MELELEC is a paragraph structure that helps you write paragraphs that are not only thicc and will eat up page space, but also are packed with meaningful content. The format is Main Point - Explain - Link - Explain - Link - Explain - Conclusion. You introduce the idea of the paragraph, add some extra information, link a related point or piece of information, explain that, link another point, explain that, and then conclude the idea expressed in the paragraph. It works, I swear. Teachers and professors love it.
4. Absolutely NO second-person. Thatâs when you directly address the audience as âyou.â Yeah, donât do that if you want to sound professional. Iâm doing it right now and sounding hypocritical af because I donât need to sound professional. Itâs Tumblr. Enough said. Anyway, second-person statements tend to have a defensive effect on the audience, which makes them automatically more hostile to whatever youâre trying to say. (âNuh-uh. I donât think that. I would do that. Thatâs not how it works for me.â) And given that the whole point of your essay is to convince your audience that youâre right, thatâs counterintuitive. The only time the word âyouâ should appear in academic writing is when itâs in the context of a quotation.
5. Avoid first-person, too. In some cases, you might need to write an essay in the first person, like when a college prof asks you to write about a personal experience. Yeah, good luck writing about your life without actually mentioning yourself. But in more impersonal writing, like informative or persuasive essays, it looks unprofessional. Sorry, but the audience doesnât want to hear your take on stuff; they want to know the facts. (Well, if you want to be really specific, they want to hear your take on stuff when itâs expressed as fact and backed up with, ya know, actual facts.) Which leads me into my next pointâŚ
6. State opinions as facts. Donât do this in real life, as it makes you look like a pompous asshole, but do it in academic writing. In other words, never soften a sentence with âI thinkâ or âIn my opinion.â Everyone already knows itâs your opinion, anyway. Instead of softening the the blow to lessen the chance of it offending someone, cite some evidence or make another point to back up your claim. Thatâs substance, which is what your teachers and profs are looking for.
7. The thesis. Itâs all about the thesis. The thesis is the TL;DR of your paper. Itâs the answer to the question âWhatâs the doodly-darn point of this essay?â The traditional spot for the thesis statement is the last sentence of the first paragraph â itâs punchy and to the point there. Take time to have a good thesisÂ
8. Donât ask rhetorical questions. Youâre the one who should be answering the questions that your audience has. So predict what they might ask about your topic or the points that you make, and answer them. Itâs not the audienceâs job to answer your questions, for the love of all things good. You can make them leave thinking about what you wrote without being so anvilicious.
9. Three is the magic number. In high school, the typical format youâll have for an essay is the five-paragraph format. Now you might be going âWhut? I thought you said that three was the magic number, Saybyebus.â Well, yes, I did say that, but two of the five essays are the introduction and the conclusion. So that leaves you with three paragraphs to really get into the meat of your essay and dish out the important information. So one of the best ways to work with this is to make your thesis three-pronged, and use each of the three paragraphs to address a point of your thesis. Boom-shacka-lacka. I just laid out the structure of your essay. Does that mean you have to cite me as credit? IDK, actually. But that does remind me of my next pointâŚ
10. DONâT PLAGIARIZE! Bruh, donât do it. Whenever you learn something from someone elseâs work and add that information to your essay, you have to cite them, even if you paraphrase them. If you donât do that, itâs plagiarism. In high school, itâll get you a big-ass downgrade, and you will probably get yelled at by your teacher. In college, it could get you SUSPENDED or EXPELLED. They take that shit seriously. So you should too.

Tea time!
I made a friend this year, at first I didnât expect to create a strong bond with this person because their personality was far from being similar to mine, and what I was used to. There were times where I became annoyed, or frustrated even because there were things that either that person didnât understand, or things I didnât want to do with that person. But somehow I always came back to this person, not because I wanted to benefit from them or degrade them out of satisfaction, or out of pity, but because their kindness and care was so wholesome that I came to a realization that this was the type of person that Iâd normally push away, for another person whoâd I expect more love from, but wouldnât give it. This friend that I made was one-in-a-million and honestly there isnât any burden that I feel I have to carry from being their friend because I learnt to appreciate the love that they had to offer in our friendship, and this taught me how to give back without any expectation because our friendship was built on trust and faith. Although I think that the person wouldnât go as far as to think of our friendship like me but Iâd like them to know that theyâve helped me learn to become a more appreciative person towards the little things and always to have trust in God.
may people with pure intentions find people with pure intentions

how to study with a mental illness!!!! aka a guide to simultaneously caring for yourself and your academics
(disclaimer: this is from purely personal experience and is not a substitute for seeking professional help. these are just personal tips as i was formally diagnosed with depression and anxiety in the third year of college, but had been showing symptoms even in high school. different methods help for different people, but i really hope some of these things can help a struggling student out, because one of the reasons i went on studyblr in the first place was that i felt really lost and anxious.)
1. done is better than none. sometimes an assignment you have to turn in would be objectively easy to complete, but it takes longer to do so because youâre afraid that the final product wonât be as good as you want it to be, or as good as a professor expects it to be. itâs hard to remove those expectations, but it is a little easier when you remember that getting some points (no matter how many they are) are better than getting a deduction for late submissions or not turning in the project at all. many people â including myself â suffer from perfectionism in university, but it is overall more important to complete something to the best of your own ability, and learn from the feedback on the project later on. more importantly, often, youâre doing better than you think youâre doing, so surprise yourself. you can do it. just start. 2.  keep careful track of your deadlines. much of my undergrad anxiety came from the fact that i knew something was due, but couldnât keep track of it, or didnât want to confront it. itâs better to confront it because you have more time to do it slowly and thoroughly. as soon as you hear about an impending exam or paper deadline, keep track of it. personally, i use google calendar. from there, you can make smaller plans and break down your goals to make it more doable! 3. donât be afraid to ask for help. there used to be a huge stigma against mental illness, but thankfully, many educational institutions are much kinder and more considerate about it. if you really canât meet a deadline or come to class, let your professor know. most professors are kind, reasonable people who genuinely care about you and your well-being. even one of my scariest professors granted extensions to a girl who was genuinely struggling with serious depression, and the college of law iâm in takes mental health very seriously to the point that they instruct faculty how to deal with such cases. if youâre not able to talk to a professor, try to ask help from a classmate or a friend who can share notes or fill you in on how they accomplished a certain assignment. many people will be happy to help. you are not a burden, love. 4. be kinder to yourself. mental illness is like any illness. it often keeps us from doing as well as weâd like to be because itâs a genuine and serious health problem. sometimes it helps to keep this in mind when we flub a report in class (as i did several tens of times in undergrad), get a bad score, say something ridiculous during recitation, or mess up a paper. itâs okay to do your best while you heal. you know youâre trying your best, and slow growth is still growth. 5. on that note, care for your other needs. one of my happiest and most fulfilled semesters (even though it was my busiest) was when i had time to see a psychiatrist, run, pack lunches and fruit to school to eat healthy, and have a reasonable-ish sleep schedule. this was during my thesis semester. while i had to take an incomplete, and finish my thesis the next sem, because i was attending to my own needs, i felt like a living, breathing, learning, happy person. and i finished my thesis the next semester. itâs better to look after your own physical health and needs before your academics. 6. sometimes, itâs better to do nothing and rest. you deserve it. part of the reason iâd been doing horribly in law school was that i didnât sleep and it was making me mildly unbalanced and incredibly suicidal; not to mention the fact that i wasnât really retaining any information or performing well. rest days are just as important as days when you study because rest IS productivity. 7. take your meds. see your psych or therapist if you have one. avail yourself of mental health services on campus if there are any. these genuinely saved my life at a time that i thought i was beyond saving. please go seek help if you can. BONUS: MY STUDY SETUP ON A TERRIBLE MENTAL HEALTH DAY (like today) - i try to clear the space and clean up as much as possible. it makes me feel like i have things under control, and have my work things where i can see them. - i eat something healthy, like fruit, and get a lot of water. i keep a water jug on my desk because it clears my thoughts and helps me replenish the fluids lost from crying (1/2jk). it also really keeps up my strength for the study process. - i turn on a calming playlist, like a jazz or lofi or ghibli playlist. in another window, i turn on a rain sound video on a softer volume, and it helps center me. - it helps when you have a soft or calming scent to calm you down. i use a lavender room spray, and it makes me feel cozy and productive, but in undergrad, i used this tea-tree lavender mix and it smelled like sunny afternoons and guitar coffeshop playlists. it really is nice. - there are breathing exercises and gifs all over the internet. they help calm you down when things seem Too Much. i really hope this helps, guys. donât hesitate to message me if youâve been having a hard time with school or life or anything. please, please care for yourselves. you can do it. â sam
