“Your bag’s unzipped.” Hyunjin reminded, shoulder pressed to your back, dragging a strap back in an endeavour to correct it. You looked down at the floor, at the mud on his sneakers and how its side pressed against your own shoes.
After a long, startled pause where your gaze met his and you came to realise that you were staring, you finally spoke, “Thanks.”
The view of his bright orange shirt stood out against a fogged sea of strangers, tightened grips around work bags, clenched fists, anticipating the new wave of passengers who were to get off on this stop. It was a small town, everyone practically knew everyone, news travelled too fast and too soon.
You were a hundred percent positive you hadn't seen him before. He had one of those faces people just don’t forget.
But that wasn’t just how you knew, it was also the bulging of a travel bag from his lanky figure, the small key chain digging into your thigh which read I LOVE SEOUL! and he sort of looked…lost.
Looking back, memory is rather strange, you think, you always remember stuff you never thought you noticed, the unremarkable sight of his split ends peeking out of a red beanie and crawling along the expanse of his neck, the shape of his neck, the tiny, easily missed beauty spot under his eye, the way he kind of hunches forward when he stands, juts his innately pouted lip out and thinks about something that has nothing to with his destination or tickets or trains or whatever.
Back then, Hwang Hyunjin was just as just as significant as any other face you’d be sure to forget by the time your boots met the platform.
But now…now, you think, you could pick him out blindfolded.
Now you could hear the rhythm of his steps, make out his silhouette out of the corner of your eye and think this is him, this is him, this is him. No one else.
People don’t belong to each other, you know this, no matter how much you want them to.
but even if it was just once, just now, just for a minute, in the split of a second, a fleeting hope;
you wished they did, you wished they had.
where⮕ In a world balanced on bruised toes, andagios, the eerie rise cellos, Hyunjin thinks love is something to run away from, even though it’s all he knows, all he understands.
