PLANNING OUTCOME from final crit to END RESULT
I booked out equipment to ensure that the lighting and shadows in the film would be even and non disruptive.Â
I fleshed out how the characters should look like, added in more dinner sound effects Â
SCENE DECISIONS AND AUDIO DECISIONS AS A RESULT OF FEEDBACK
- i focused more on having the speakers talk nearly immediatly about the highlight of their story keeping any build up or context short and sweet
- as for the framing i chose to not keep jumping from the smallest table scene to a zoomed in framing each time a person starts to tell their story, instead it keeps zooms in progressively ( getting the view more roped in after the “introductory moments”
TABLE TEST AND REFLECTIONS
this was another test following the suggestion of better framing the atmosphere/ context for the conversations.
I think that the previous test with the zooming in transition works smoother when flicking between the overarching context and the individual story accounts as there is a clear space in which the characters can interact, the presence of the dining table is not lost . whereas the test where the table is a separate piece it could visually disrupt the main actions as well as be another unnecessary element to min when moving the piece ( slow down production)Â

WHY I CHOSE THE INTERVIEWS USED IN FINAL PIECE
TEST FOLLOWING FEEDBACK SUGGESTION TO MAKE CONTEXT OF CONVERATION OBVIOUS WHILE KEEPING THE VISUAL LANGUAGE COHERENT

IDEAS AFTER ATMOSPHERE TEST
After testing more abstract visuals based off another single story ( REFER TO PREVIOUS POST)Â I looked back again at the audio collection -Â
link to audio collection https://kingston.box.com/s/w29si47e1iyanqr10z1osuvrregoctj0
and picked out 3 where I could clearly categorise the emotions that the food experience / memory made the person feel - it was a range of both positive and negative scenarios ( ie, feeling uncertain and unsure vs feeling confident and playful) this lead to to the idea of gathering a range of “good” to “bad” food memories to see how they change the way we think of things and hence how we interact with others. My reasoning for this stemmed from the target audience of a person who feels disconnected from others as well as food and in order to regain a connection, picking out others experiences would be a way to re-spark this . like a hey! pay more attention to what’s going on with food and the people around it!
edits of the 3 audio bits i’m referencing : https://kingston.box.com/s/mdt4bi5x36plodk4dolbra7yvo93g298
as a result, I singled out a new questions to ask - by prompting them to make links of a food to a person they interacted directly with - how they interact with the person and food would link to a certain scenario / feeling type)Â
supporting questions that would be asked about the main response to base visuals and decisions on.
PLANNING BASED OF OLD INTERVIEWS
CHANGE OF APPROACH
(grey pen is before - other colours added after feedback)
following feedback and having collected further interviews based off the new prompt , what I communicating changed from being aimed at people who specifically feel a disconnect from people to just people as a whole, instead i set out to communicate how social connections are enhanced by memories of food - based off this I then chose the mix of four interviews ( AS SHOWN IN SHEET). i kept in mind the range of “bad” - “ good” when picking these.Â
I moved ahead and started doing tests on how these interviews would happen as a conversation between the individuals - in order to give an overall sense of narrative to the piece.Â
I started by cutting down the interviews to only mention the key moments of each scenario ,Â
mixed interview of salty pancakes ( grandma not believing speaker) with the account of arguing with grandma about how food should be cooked - as they both deal with a stubborn interaction . Â
once i was happy with the initial test of weaving the dialogue i started planning the visuals

the green area is meant for a possible greenscreen for the next transition
I took some inspiration for the video My Mother’s Coat for the salt (collage and pen)and annoyance scene ( paint, pen and collage) using as little lines to illustrate the characters as possible . It was a way for me to make it clear who is representing who.

VIsualising atmosphere outcome
Visualising atmosphere test
wasn’t quite sure where I’m going with my outcome so i decided to do technical testing.
Had done another interview on food and used the below segment as a reference point. - I picked the below segment because it was an awkward situation relating to food.Â
THIS IS A TEST TO BE LESS LITERAL WITH MY VISUALS
still need to do more technical tests but the next one should have a clear concept/ rationale, behind what i want to communicate and how i’m tying it all together.

INTERIM CRIT FEED BACK
Logging the interviews
After i pulled out the points of interest, good language, and some quotes i started to look for links between them...

act one : family make. a section of a collection of linking personal stories. experiences seemingly different are united by relatable "side" moments , the seasonings if you will to the main event. I don't mean relatable as in it happens to everyone but things that stand out a bit form the norm but not too wildly that it oversteps the mundane. ie main event : making food together. Â seasoning : sparks of passing moments nearly mundane but that stand out nonetheless. its a piece that wants to both unite and people and encourage appreciation for even the minor excitations in our everyday. Â moments in our lives. we can ground these in food.
REFLECTION
Haven't quite completed it but I think there scenes I planned that are still too literal, I think with more consideration these zoom ins could Show texture to help the atmosphere ( esp how the atmospheres of each scenario could intermingle) rather than be directly related to the language. I feel like the sequence can definitely be broken up  and not just be pure like shape and texture animations
the scene planning is also based more on transitioning between what is literally said rather than offering up something more to the narrative. Â considering the interviews focused more on the scenario, I could get written logs of more specific descriptions of the memory to base the visuals off of. will have to gather a lot of references for the world building in their memories - to better encapsulate the moment dialogue/ spoken language could trail off and be overtaken by surrounding sound effects - descriptive language appear as type/ text any background piece is borderline abstract. actually maybe a filled background could be too distracting.. maybe if they were in the type..? maybe make a prop of a food item but make it perform the "side act" - will depend heavily on scenario. given more time I would incorporate a couple more voices and play around with how I link the audio. - would definitely be useful to narrow down interview questions for a second clearer round of experiences
