Ariāel Stachelās amazing speech after making Broadway history as the first Asian to win the Tony Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his work on āThe Bandās Visitā
@ anyone who think that āThe Bands Visitā sweeping the Tonys isnāt important let me tell you something:
A few weeks ago when school was ending I told a teacher of mine that I wanted to act on Broadway, that being in the theater life for the rest of my life was my dream.
You know what happened?
They looked me straight in the eye and said that Iād need to change my last name. Why? Because I have an Arab / Middle-Eastern last name.
They recommended I changed my last name and try not to be open about my heritage because Broadway and theater in general isnāt very nice to Arabs / Middle-Easterners.
THE FACT THAT THE BANDS VISIT SWEPT THE TONYS LIKE THEY DID MADE ME BAWL LIKE A BABY.
This is so important to so many of us. Please. Even if it isnāt your favorite show or you donāt like the fact that it won so many awards thatās fine. But please realize the impact it has on is Arab and Middle-Eastern actors and actresses who, before the 72nd Tony awards, were all told theyād have to hide a defining aspect of themselves if they wanted to pursue their dream career!

āThe Maronites are Arabs, we are part of the Arab world. And although itās important to revive our language and maintain our heritage, the church is very outspoken against the campaign of these people.ā

āI want to speak to a manager,ā the middle-aged woman said in her stern I-used-to-be-a-soccer-mom-ten-years-ago voice, looking down at me over the top of her Gucci reading glasses.
A wicked grin split across my face and the gates of Hell opened up behind me, releasing a gust of hot wind that whipped my apron around my body and forced the woman to shield her face. Demons came forth, dancing around in flames with songs of, āShe wants to speak to a manager. Did you hear that? She wants to speak to a manager!ā before erupting into earsplitting shrieks of laughter, none louder than my own cackling.
I took in the womanās look of utter horror before my eyes rolled back into my head and I growled,
āI am the manager.ā
a thing for one of my favorite posts on this site
always reblog. no matter where i see it, i reblog it!
After my stint as an assistant manager at gamestop, years ago, this was my favorite thing to do.
Iām back to broadway baby
I left the broadway fandom because I just wasnāt liking all these broadway musicals. Then I saw this post of the song āOmar Sharifā from TBV and me being arab recognized this name. So I did my research and found the story and have been listening to the soundtrack. This story shows how people transcend their cultural barriers (Arabs/Israelis if you donāt know what Iām talking about look it up) and just be good people. Then I saw that Tony Shalhoub is in it and Iām Lebanese Maronite just like he was raised. I listen to Umm Kulthum and Fairuz. I watched Tony Shalhoub and Ariāel Stachel receive their Tonys and I cried at their speeches because I related to both of them. I barely understand Levantine Arabic but itgaraāa is so beautiful I donāt even need to know what heās saying. It was so amazing to see not only middle eastern actors but such a wide variety. In the western world you donāt see variety of Arabs but that cast contained Arab religious minorities (Jews and Christians) who are often overlooked in media. Representation is amazing and I am so grateful for these amazing actors showing me that I wasnāt alone in hiding my hummus and baba ghanoush and falafel and shawarma or when bullies said I was a lesbian instead of Lebanese. We arenāt towelheads or camel jockeys or terrorists. We are artists and we are Arabs.
easter is on april fools day this year and all i can think about is the bible story of jesus
an apostle: man i canāt believe jesus died
jesus, rising from the grave: surprise bitch april fools
an apostle: we thought you were dead!
jesus, about to invent april fools: oh, you havenāt heard?
Good Friday has historically been a time where (mainly white European) peopleās anti-semitism would come out and shine. During medieval times, Holy Week became a time where priests would deliver homilies during the mass condemning the āperfidis JudƦisā - the infidel Jews- and Holy Week also became a time where Jews would face violence.
While the Church has mended its anti-semitic ways, many people still hold this sentiment with the added bonus of Islamophobia and xenophobia now. Despite the fact that blaming Jews for killing Jesus is theologically absurd since Christian doctrine dictates that Jesus was destined to die to fulfill prophecies, letās look at it from a different lens.
If today a brown Middle Eastern man who opposed capitalistic greed, and believed in giving women dignity rather than slut-shaming them, were to be persecuted by the oppressive state government of his land, how many āgood Christiansā would stand against that?
If Christ were in his homeland today in the Middle East, he would face state oppression, and people like Trump would be the Pontius Pilates, and right wing Christians would be the crowd shouting for Barabass to be freed rather than Jesus.
These people call themselves Christians but do not emulate Christ one bit.
