On this #Holocaust Memorial Day, I can only think of my grandparents who met in 1948 at the Wegsheid displaced persons camp in Linz, Austria. Regina Dawidowicz and Leon Smolarz married on November 16, 1949 before immigrating to Springfield, MA. This is their wedding photo. Out of a family of four on my grandmother’s side, only my grandmother and her sister Yochelle survived. Out of a family of nine, only my grandfather and his two brothers, Eddie and Solomon survived. Many of their extended family members perished in #Auschwitz. Both of my grandparents passed away before my parents met in the ’80s. I was fortunate enough in this life to have met my great aunt Yochelle and my great uncle Eddie, who have now since passed (uncle Eddie passed only two years ago), and am forever looking forward to the next life when I can meet everyone.
