Today @cmstrange and I played The Westwood Craft Fair. We spent the day singing songs in the sunshine and smiling at folks who tipped us. We pet dogs and ate food to raise funds for their local fire department. We walked along a bridge over the creek and we watched the fish dart under our feet. On our way home we crossed paths perfectly with @phil.johnson.583 - pulled on the side of the highway, ran to each other and got in a long, big, 3 person bear hug. Okay. Last night was nothing short of amazing. Huge thanks to @momosacramento for having us, it was a dream come true to share music with you. I’m going to be honest for a moment. This path is really hard. There are one or two days out of the month when I say “I want out. I don’t want to do this anymore”. The lack of hope in the dream I’ve been stumbling towards for years now becomes deafening. “You’re not skinny enough. You’re not pretty enough for those kinds of opportunities. Your disease is always going to hold you back. You’re not smart or dedicated enough. You don’t deserve any of this. You’re an imposter”. And the minute my heart sinks and I realize that getting a desk job is probably the next step, there it is. A man who surprised his wife with tickets to my show for their 32nd wedding anniversary. A friend I haven’t been close with since high school weeping after the gig and holding her so close because her feelings are a direct reflection of my own. Someone fighting an illness who comes to all my shows in town with that same kind smile and those twinkly eyes that make me want to grab him and squeeze him so tight. Sharing a show with someone who I look up to and crying together at the end because we both believe in each other so much. Looking at Corey and knowing he’s sitting right behind me smiling and grooving. Always with a fierce belief that we can catch up to the dream I’ve had since I was a kid, that it’s just a matter of time. This path is marked with sacrifice. Heartbreak. Disappointments. Deep friendship- the kind that changes you forever. So many tears. Late nights and early mornings. Joy, so much joy, and all of it is seeped in gratitude. Every single bit of it, all the moments of loss and pain and hopelessness and in all the explosive moments of pure happiness onstage. It’s in the quiet perfection when you’re done and know that you gave those folks everything you had. I get to pick it up in a few hours but this is another reality of having Type 1 Diabetes. @judith_kathryn is the kind of person who comes over twice a month for chocolate chip pancakes. She sings the word “um” when she’s thinking. She is the one who is too smart for her own good, and doesn’t see how truly beautiful she is, inside and out. She’s a survivor. If she loves you, she loves you fiercely and will not give up that love for anything. She cries with you when you’re sad, does your dishes when you’re in the hospital for four days, and loves you unconditionally. She’s learning how to love herself, and watching her take those REALLY HARD STEPS is truly remarkable to watch. Jude inspires me every day and I get love rage if I don’t see her for a long time. This human knows me better than almost anyone. We yell our love for each other and we quote Gilmore Girls. Singing with her is seriously like heaven on earth. This friendship is one for the books, and I’m slowly realizing that I may very well be in the best time of my life, partially because she is in it. Happiest of Birthdays, you badass.
