When Henri speaks with Luna after the incident with the painting, he assures her that it wasn't just her fault that his soul migrated into the picture, but that he also actively contributed to it. Due to his heritage, he possesses a little magical ability.
This makes sense, because it only worked to summon him the first time. After that, Luna tried again and again, without success.
After this incident, he lost all his charm and could no longer cast magic. I don't know what exactly happened; it was probably magical exhaustion, and he simply lacked the strength for his soul to fully return to his body.
However, things changed when Henri fell in love with Luna. Since 'The power of love is a source of strength for White Witches', it worked again—even multiple times—and he managed to magically write his thoughts into the air.
But unfortunately, this kind of magic placed too great a burden on him, causing him to fall severely ill.
To protect Henri, Luna decided to end their relationship and extracted all their shared memories and his love for her from his body.
Years went by, and by the time they finally crossed paths again, much had changed. Among those changes, Henri now claims he cannot use any magic at all.
This raises the question: What actually happened to his slight magical ability, which now goes completely unmentioned?
Does Henri still possess magic but simply can't use it, or did he lose it completely since then?
In the manga, it is mentioned that it's possible to lose your magic naturally over time, but it can also be stolen.
White Witches can seduce Black Mages and steal their magic. However, it is extremely rare for a Black Mage to do the same. We know of only one Black Mage, Ellroy, who was capable of stealing magic.
Like Ellroy, Luna possesses the rare ability of extracting poison from people's bodies. So, could Luna also be capable of stealing magic?
Could it be that when Luna extracted Henri's love and memories, she unknowingly ended up stealing his magic along with them?

Champignon Witch: Flora and Fungi in Character Design - Claude
The Shaggy Mane (Sasakure-hitoyotake)
This mushroom undergoes a unique life cycle that mirrors Claude’s appearance and hints at a deeper story.
Initially white and smooth, the mushroom slowly begins to darken as it matures, yet it adorns itself with distinctive white scales. This natural ornamentation creates a striking parallel to Claude, who decorates his cloak with glittering stones.
In this specific illustration, Claude’s cloak is completely devoid of these stones. I guess that the image might depict a younger Claude from a past era—a theory supported by the bonus chapter set 50 years prior, where he is shown with significantly fewer stones on his cloak.
Another notable detail is that Claude is shown here with normal, human hands, whereas in the manga, he is consistently depicted with black claws.
This may suggest that the illustration captures an original version of himself, matching the mushroom’s early, pristine stage.
However, this beauty is fleeting. Once the bell-shaped cap reaches full maturity, it begins to "melt." This process, known as deliquescence, causes the edges of the cap to turn black and dissolve into a thick, ink-like fluid, leaving only the bare stalk behind.
Seeing Claude right next to a symbol of active decay feels like a heavy premonition. It could be a silent hint that significant changes or sacrifices lie ahead for him.
Daisy Fleabane (Himejion)
It represents Soboku (素朴)—simplicity, naturalness, and a lack of artifice. This mirrors Claude’s straightforward personality. Whenever he speaks, he gets straight to the point and has no patience for mind games or people who take too long to deliver their message. This directness often borders on rudeness, as he cares little for social etiquette — with the sole exception of his master.
Interestingly, the Daisy Fleabane is also an invasive species known for spreading aggressively. This mirrors how Lizel perceives Claude: as an unwelcome guest who intrudes upon their space.
White Clover (Shirotsumekusa)
In Hanakotoba, the primary meaning is "Promise" (Yakusoku). Since nothing has been said in the story about an official promise, it could be a silent promise he made to himself regarding Luna.
Hidden between the three-leaf clovers typical of White Clover, there are also some four-leaf ones. This hidden symbol of luck offers a little hope in contrast to the rather dark transformation of the mushroom.
I wondered what it is about romantic love that's poisonous for black magicians and witches. Love in it of itself isn't. It's just romantic love specifically.
Though it may come down to how different types of love are perceived in Japan. "Ai" and "koi" are the two types of love on display in the story, and each one of those have a different perception. In the English scanlation, they are divided using "romantic love" and "caring love."
"Ai" (愛) is all-encompassing and unconditional. It's more about giving than wanting. It's deeply felt and not casually thrown around. Think weddings and death beds. Those situations are when you would actually say it. It's described as the type of love that comes to a couple after they've been together for many, many years, long after the honeymoon days and the rose-tinted days, given they're still in a satisfying marriage. It's just an overall feeling of love, whether it's a partner, a long-time childhood friend, etc.
"Koi" (恋) is specifically romantic. It's for those passionate phases, those days of yearning and longing, and it's all about wanting. It's selfish, it's possessive, it's fleeting, and it's temporary before transitioning into something else.
"Ai" is not hard on black magicians' bodies and abilities. In fact, it's how Ellroy was able to take care of and love Luna and how Luna was able to love him back. It's how Gustave is able to continue being in Luna's life even after he erased his romantic feelings, with him considering her his "Spring."
It's the nature of "koi" that's dangerous for them. Many of those things associated with it can easily produce poison if a wrench is thrown into the mix of pursuit, or if those feelings sit and fester. Black magicians' bodies are used to dealing with poison, so what's actually going on?
On the flip side of the coin, there's white magicians and witches. "Koi" is what strengthens them the most. Was this duality introduced simply to add to the contrast between the two different types of magicians? To clearly establish white magicians as the protagonist's natural enemy? Is the difficulty of "koi" even natural or is there a cosmic interference going on? Can't wait to see what the answer is.
Champignon Witch: Flora and Fungi in Character Design - Lizel
The Destroying Angel (Dokutsurutake)
Though white and elegant in appearance, this fungus is a deadly toxin frequently mistaken for something edible. This mirrors Lizel’s own nature—outwardly harmless, yet a lethal threat to the world because of his curse.
This danger holds another layer beyond the curse itself. While Luna sees only an innocent boy, his feelings remain a latent danger. The very love Lizel feels for Luna is like a toxin to her that could put her in grave danger.
The Fern (Shida)
The Fern in Japanese symbolism stands for charm which points to Lizel’s unique aura.
Bellflowers (Tsuriganeso) and Violets (Sumire)
While each of these plants carries various meanings in Japanese culture, their common thread is Seijitsu (誠実). It embodies profound integrity and sincerity—a state where heart, words, and actions exist in perfect alignment.
Transcending simple honesty, it represents a deep moral commitment and unwavering reliability. This is the very essence of Lizel’s character: his kind heart and steadfast principles ensure that he remains true to his values and to those he cares about, no matter the burden he carries.
Additionally, the Bellflower signifies Kansha (感謝)—a sense of gratitude rooted in deep appreciation, reflecting exactly what Lizel feels for Luna.
The deep purple Violet represents also a love that is sincere and modest. It reflects Lizel’s quiet devotion—a love that is deeply felt.
Champignon Witch: Flora and Fungi in Character Design - Luna
The Fly Agaric (Benitengutake):
Poisonous and mysterious. In Japanese folklore, this mushroom is associated with the Tengu (forest spirits), acting as a bridge between the human world and the spirit realm. It represents Luna’s aura as a witch who exists in between, feeling a deep connection to both humanity and the spirit world.
The Raspberry (Kiichigo):
A symbol of modesty and hidden treasures. Just as the sweet fruit is guarded by delicate thorns, it reflects Luna’s character: she is gentle and kind, yet shy and reserved.
The Moss (Koke):
Represents eternity, constancy, and harmony. It signifies that Luna has lived in balance with nature for countless years, becoming a permanent part of the forest's ancient soul.
The Four-Leaf Clover:
A classic European symbol of luck and hope—serving as a positive omen for her future.

Claude is a character who is incredibly difficult to read. While others' feelings for Luna are transparent, Claude’s true nature remains largely hidden behind his mask, only surfacing in fleeting moments—until a devastating turning point forces him to lock away his emotions entirely.
Early on, Claude’s stoic facade repeatedly fails. When the bookseller mockingly accuses him of being jealous, Claude loses his cool; his mask slips, and he reacts with defensive rage. This outburst proves that the teaser hit a real sore spot.
The "sparkly stones" scene reveals Claude’s true vulnerability.
Even though the stones are his known weakness, they alone wouldn't have been enough to sway him. As a proud Familiar, he could have resisted the gems on their own—but his expression betrays that Luna's sheer effort and her pleading gaze are what truly shatter his resolve. Ultimately, it is this emotional connection that drives him to give in and help her with the boy.
From that point on, Claude remained his usual prickly self, yet he became slightly gentler and even caring. This subtle shift likely gave Luna the courage to ask him to stay silent about the incident.
But this request was impossible. Luna knows that as a Familiar, his loyalty to his Master should always come first. Her asking for a favor that directly challenges this loyalty is so illogical that Claude is momentarily stunned. Yet, she keeps pleading.
The moment Claude finds himself in the middle of the 'Black Witches' Emergency Conference,' he is frozen in shock. He instantly senses the gravity of the situation, dreading that his Master might be watching him from behind one of the masks. When he finally spots him among the back rows, Claude’s eyes go wide in absolute, horrified realization. He stands frozen, staring fixedly at him—until his Master steps forward and greets him with a phrase that carries a chilling double meaning:
"You’ve arrived at just the right time to check on Luna, haven't you?" (「ちょうど ルーナの様子を 見に来てくれて たんだね」)
After a brief, tense pause, he adds: "Good work." (ご苦労)
Tori’s greeting is a calculated psychological game. While it initially hints at personal concern, the subsequent use of 'Gokurō'—a term reserved strictly for subordinates—decisively shatters any personal interpretation. It is a tactical power move; instead of thanking Claude, he frames the visit as a mere mission. He is indirectly telling him: "I know you are here for your own reasons, but I am choosing to see you only as my servant doing your duty."
Claude flushes with shame, bowing low in submission. But then his Master demands specific details about the incident, placing him in an impossible position. Even though Claude had told Luna her earlier request was impossible, her desperate pleading and her look are again his weak point.
When the Flame Mage asks Claude whether Luna is telling the truth, he is hesitating. Turning a solemn gaze toward her and looking into her eyes, he realizes he is unable to turn her down. Despite not knowing her reasons or the full truth, he refuses to betray her. His simple "Yes"—devoid of the details his Master explicitly demanded—is a quiet, absolute act of defiance. By withholding the information, Claude chooses Luna over his contract, his Master, and his own pride.
In the charged silence that follows, the connection between them reaches its peak.
Luna gazes at him in stunned disbelief, her eyes filled with deep, visible sorrow as she recognizes the absolute sacrifice he has just made on her behalf.
His Master, visibly dissatisfied and deeply disappointed, punishes him with silence. Claude remains deeply dejected, his head bowed in a posture of total resignation. He never intended to betray his Master, yet he finds himself utterly unable to turn away from Luna’s desperate plea and his own visceral need to protect her. Overwhelmed by shame for this perceived weakness, his sharp, bitter 'tch' is the sound of pure self-dissatisfaction.
As the truth about the boy’s danger breaks, Claude’s composure finally shatters. He realizes with horror that by honoring Luna’s plea, he unwittingly became an accomplice to her own peril. First, he loudly proclaims his ignorance to the council, desperate to distance himself. Then, he turns to Luna with a gaze of pure contempt, unable to believe she used his trust while knowing the truth all along.
He orders her to surrender the boy, but when she still refuses, his restraint vanishes. Exploding in fury, he is driven by a violent, desperate need to protect her—even if it means saving her from the consequences of her own judgment by force.
His resentment only fades when he finally learns the tragic history behind Luna’s actions. The revelation that she once shared the same dark fate as the boy softens Claude’s gaze; he finally understands her unwavering resolve and sees her in a completely different light.
But when the Flame Mage launches an attack on Luna, Claude’s last bit of control vanishes.
Seeing her in immediate danger, he nearly runs amok, ready to charge the assailant regardless of the consequences. However, a sudden command from his Master brings him to a halt just in time. Realizing that Luna has fled, he brings her back, unwilling to let her abandon her responsibilities—or him—to face the consequences alone. Back in the circle, he finally vents all his pent-up emotions on her in a fury, his pride wounded by the realization that his blind trust has left him utterly compromised. Unaware that his Master is already facing open criticism for his behavior.
Following the Council's decision to grant the boy a three-year grace period, Claude is summarily disciplined.
Accepting the weight of his failure, he is demoted from Renraku-yaku (observer) to Kanshiyaku (strict warden)—a transition he accepts as a severe test of his absolute loyalty. This new role is a grueling, thankless assignment. Stripped of his former freedoms, Claude is forced into round-the-clock surveillance, haunted by the knowledge that his Master could be watching at any moment.
The role of Kanshiyaku will fundamentally change Claude. The very advice he gave to Luna—"discard your feelings and be strict"—becomes his own ironclad strategy, which he applies ruthlessly to himself. However, beneath this cold exterior lies his true motive: he wants to protect Luna at all costs. He believes that any sign of weakness could harm her. To keep her safe, he buries his emotions entirely, a process that, over time, renders him cynical, embittered, and morose. The feelings that were once perceptible are no longer visible. Yet, in secret, this situation torments him and destroys him from within.
A small detail episode 11 didn't include: Lize has officially been under Luna's care for 10 years at this point in the story. He's supposed to be around Henri's age.
Or could it be that he couldn't be killed because the murderer didn't know his true name? Therefore, his time stopped, and Luna only found him ten years after the attempted murder?
After all, his mother did tell him: 'As long as your true name remains unknown, no curse can inflict a fatal wound upon you.'"

I was disappointed that episode 9 did not include the conversation between Claude and the Bird Wizard because it showed a side to Claude other than "nagging crow", and in hindsight it was a turning point in his relationship with Lize.
He had been treating Lize with absolutely no grace, tact, or emotional understanding for what he was dealing with. To him he was just a monster waiting in the wings and he needed to regard him as such. And even without that, Lize was still a white wizard. Another regarded enemy.
He begins to doubt his ways like this after he witnesses Lize choosing to help a poisonous bird with its pain instead of annihilating it. He came to the realization that he hadn't truly been watching Lize all this time and that in the face of his pure and generous feat despite being a Cursed Child™, his own behavior had been unacceptable.
From that day forward, his relationship with Lize became more like "older sibling who annoys the shit out of the other but will defend them when it gets serious" over "btw, I'll kill you if you step out of line."
Especially because it shows that Claude has been under constant watch by Tori-sama ever since the assembly of the Black Witch Council. As soon as he left the Mushroom House, Tori-sama immediately made mental contact with him.
It really gives you an idea of how much pressure he’s under to finish the task, Tori Sama gave him.
